This is certainly not the issue that I want to be discussing as we head into the 25th Anniversary, but it is an important one as it appears to be an ongoing issue for our moderating crew. I don't see a lot of spam on here, but that just means that they are doing a very good job but we don't want it to be a burden for anybody. We have a wonderful community here and we want to preserve that. I know we've discussed in the past on having guest accounts and it was a feature that I felt the pros outweighed the cons. That may no longer be the case. We do have some fans and managers who post as guest, but I hope it would not be an issue for anybody who is invested in the FCBA to create an account. Especially with the option to link multiple accounts under one user name, so hypothetically you could have a manager and all of their fighters, which I know has been done. But, if there are legitimate reasons to leave guest accounts in place and benefits that would be extremely helpful, please share. I want to hear from everybody on this issue, but I'm also going to put up a poll here. Please feel free to weigh in and vote, but if you have something to say, you can also e-mail me. I don't want this to overwhelm the board as I want the focus to be on the 25th Anniversary, but I also want everybody to be heard on this topic. So, don't hesitate to say something. I think the risks have been outlined as to leaving guest accounts in place, but if you have anything to say on why they should remain or any thoughts in general, feel free.
Also, if you need to focus on some of the cool reasons why we're here take time to check out the latest Blood Feud FNL Event here: Blood Feud 2024, the latest Asylum Announcement or Tractorpull's always fun Predictions for the most recent PPV!Thank you all for your help and for making this such a great place to participate with each & every month!

I definitely didn’t think this would warrant a big discussion and vote, nor did I want to create a “thing” ahead of the anniversary.
I wouldn’t call it a burden, but I am deleting 5-10 posts per week most weeks, with a ridiculous 11 today alone. It sounds like others are doing the same. Right now it’s just advertising junk posts done by bots, but I can’t help but think about the day that a bot or guest user posts something that isn’t allowed by the proboards guidelines. I have seen these forums deleted without warning, and right now we’re fully open to someone with no connection to the board nuking it at any moment. That seems silly to me when all it takes is 2 minutes to sign up for a proper account one single time. Not only would it save the modding, but more importantly there would be accountability with who can post here.
That was my only point, but if it’s something that has been talked about before and there’s some reason why people can’t make an account with an email address, then we can leave it alone!

I hope guest accounts at least can't participate in the voting.

I will be happy to do a more detailed explanation if it comes to that, but just to show how easy and more organized/secure things can be, see below. There’s a tiny icon at the bottom of your screen from ANY page on the forum. If you’re on mobile, just scroll to the bottom and click “desktop version” first. From here, click “create a new account on this forum”. You can see that I have one profile for my managerial account (CWF), and I created a second just for this demonstration. Creating the profile for Stana took me 5 seconds. If you’re inclined, you can do it for every fighter in your Stable. To switch between profiles, just hit the first button again to bring up all your profiles. No need to use a guest account for every fighter, no need for anything complicated, no alternate emails, no alternate login, no losing track of your previous posts. I don’t want to piss anybody off or mess up how things have run for 25 years, so I feel like it should be unanimous. I just don’t think this should be the only place on the internet with complete anonymity lol. Especially with how much work is stored here that could be wiped by a guest or bot doing something stupid. If y’all would prefer the spam and risk in order to let random internet people comment, that’s cool with me! I’ll keep modding and won’t mention it again.

I don't have a horse in this race. The only downsides I can think of for mandating account-creation:
- we lose a bit of spontaneous fan interaction - some managers will be forced to go through a few additional steps in order to post on the forums. - privacy concerns? - technological inexperience?
Dealing with the spam posts so far has been manageable to me. There's a lot of us moderators, across different timezones, and we typically get to them quite quickly. They've been a distraction, but if others find them more intolerable, we should definitely deal with them in a more permanent fashion.
It's gonna inconvenience some folks either way.

These are all really great points, so thanks for sharing. Some of these I had thought about and some of them I hadn't, so each of them are appreciated!
A) There is the possibility of some loss of spontaneous fan interaction, which I always enjoy, but I would hope the more dedicated fans will be able to create their own account. Really, the ability to post from a guest account can be restricted board by board, so I could leave the board where we get 'Fan Requests' open for guest accounts and see whether there is a significant amount of spam there or the amount of restriction lets people know that we are 'closed for business'.
B) I agree there could be an extra step or two, but I don't think it's too complicated for our managers to figure out and I've already seen a few managers already creating new accounts, so that should make things a little bit easier going forward. C) Privacy concerns are definitely an issue, especially in today's society, but I think when I post the expanded walkthrough, building on what CWF already created, then I'll mention the option to create an anonymous e-mail account to link to the boards. There are some that don't require any personal information to create a simple e-mail account to link to the boards.
D) Technological inexperience is a fair question because that is not one of my strong suits either. I am continually impressed by some of the stuff that people can pull off here, but hopefully we can walk through and help people through it as needed.
I've felt the spam has been manageable too, but I can certainly see where it can get overwhelming and I don't want that to distract from the fun people are having here. I think addressing them in a permanent fashion is likely the way to go. From all of the feedback I'm receiving on here and privately, I think we'll pull the trigger on restricting guest accounts soon. There are some risk, but I do think the overall benefits in sustaining our board and community should outweigh those in the end!
