Intro/Fight:
After summiting the peak of what would have been one of the biggest victories of her career, only to come tumbling back down to earth with a leathery bang, it would have been understandable for Anne Hathaway to disengage mentally from this tournament. It was already an uphill battle, and after letting a career-defining win slip through her fingertips, no one would have blamed her for hanging her head. Through the first round, it appeared as though that's exactly what was happening with the Global Boxing Syndicate trainer. This was essentially an elimination match in all likelihood, and Schiffer unquestionably came out with more juice.
Anne had seen this movie one too many times over the course of the last decade, and with an inability to split or evade the rangy Claudia Schiffer's venus flytrap of wide-looping hooks and crosses, Hathaway had taken her lumps in the opening minutes. Inexperienced, but with length to spare, Schiffer poured meaty lefts into Hathaway's midsection from a comfortable range, shrinking the brunette with some seldom-seen precision. Hathaway had the edge in experience, but unfortunately most of that experience involved being laid out on her backside. Feeding off the brunette's lack of aggression and ineptitude, the blonde spent the better part of the first sparring with a training dummy. Much to the delight of the fans wanting an entertaining bout, Hathaway came out with a steely resolve against Schiffer in the second. Taking a page out of Katic's book, Anne used her speed to dart through Schiffer's looping body blows and render them ineffective, stunting the blonde's attack from in tight. Working Claudia toward the ropes, Anne began boring holes through the older blonde's tender abdomen, splitting her taut tummy with ferocious uppercuts and close-quarters rabbit punches. With Schiffer curling into a more manageable posture, Hathaway struck with a spiteful rising uppercut that de-cleated Schiffer, sending her tumbling into the ropes completely lost. With Schiffer being saved by the bell from any semblance of a follow-up after Hathaway's jaw-rattling strike, Anne's momentum was totally halted between rounds; and as the third dragged on it dissipated altogether. As both fighters slowed, it was Schiffer who benefited as she was no longer plagued by the speed and economy with which Hathaway was working in the opening rounds. Schiffer narrowly stole the intermittent paint-trading exchanges in the third round while Anne struggled to find the same bite she'd had previously. As the overall technique and dexterity displayed by both fighters continued to plummet as the fight wore on into the fourth, it was Schiffer who's fatigue finally proved fatal.
Understandable given her age, but Schiffer had never gone past the fifth round; and as the fight dragged on it became painfully apparent as to why. The blonde's once crisp overhands now lagged as though she was carrying weights; her movement appearing as though she was trudging through mud. Anne was no spring chicken herself, but the agility once needed to sidestep the blonde's lethargic strikes was now done with ease. Claudia's misses were punished with stiff, gutting uppercuts to her slumping midsection; her desperate chin-hunting crosses cut off as they ricocheted into nothing but air. Hathaway countered everything the blonde threw with devastating rib-busters of her own, finally rocking Schiffer with a bludgeoning uppercut that cut her steering. The gangly blonde teetered on her heels before spilling into a bewildered Hathaway who couldn't help but catch her. The two waddled backwards a handful of steps before Schiffer's stems gave out, sloppily spilling out of the brunette's grasp and slumped face-first to the canvas. Remarkably almost 2-0-0, Anne Hathaway was still very much in this Pool.
