BEFORE:
"May of 2012," says Odette with a smile. "Over a decade between my first and second appearances here, which might just be a record. Well, I'm back, and this time I'm not in against a much bigger girl. This time, I'm in against a true light. And, I'm going to show you all what difference that makes."
"She's a champion," Kara admits with a nod. "So, she's probably the favorite tonight. But, trust me on this, the favorite isn't going to win."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'I Want You To' by Weezer, and here comes former Ice Hotel Queen and lightweight champion, 'The Deadly Dart', Odette Yustman!"
Cassie: "And, for the record, the very first Asylum card was on February 26, 2011, so Odette was definitely on one of the earliest cards."
McCarthy: "Those early cards are what I call 'The Good Old Days', before Walmart and Scabbo started clogging up this table. It was just the two Jenny's, the two Hall of Famers...STOP WHISTLING THAT 'ONE OF THESE THINGS IS NOT LIKE THE OTHERS' SONG WALMART!"
O'Dell: "No, calm down, Mac, and let's keep our attention on the ring, where Yustman climbs in and is helped off with the robe, and she's looking VERY good in that black bikini..."
McCarthy: "Nothin' but a number!"
O'Dell: "And, that's 'Flawless' by The Ones pounding through the arena, and here comes Kara 'The Body' Del Toro!"
Tess: "Kara slipped into the Top Twenty in the last Boxing World rankings. She's looking to take that last step and become a legitimate contender and a win over Yustman would definitely help in that quest."
O'Dell: "Kara into the ring and helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve, and the crowd, as usual, popping in a MAJOR way for Del Toro in that neon green number she likes. Ladies about ready. Time for some picks. Tess likes Kara. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Yustman is a REAL fighter. Odette!"
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "There's the bell. Ladies setting up at range here, and no surprise there, as both are long and love to use that reach. Odette's got a bit more range, and she's working that jab, dropping right hands off it, scoring well in the early going. Kara moving the feet, angling..."
McCarthy: "If this turns into a boxing match, Del Toro has NO chance. NONE."
O'Dell: "Kara holding her own pretty well for the moment, but, of course, it's early and DOWN GOES YUSTMAN! Oh, what a straight right hand from Kara and Odette is dropped to her back in the middle of the ring! That absolutely came right out of nowhere and Yustman never saw it coming!"
Tess: "This place is just a house of HORRORS for Odette..."
O'Dell: "Kara to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Yustman sits up at six. Seven. To her feet at eight. Ref gives the older woman the mandatory, and HERE COMES KARA! Del Toro firing away with both hands, backing her rival to the ropes, hooking body, back upstairs with a hard right hand. Grim stuff for Odette, but just ten seconds left in the round. GOOD right from Kara and there's the bell. HUGE opening round, Del Toro."
Cassie: "Kara leads 10-8, but she may wish she'd been able to finish."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Horrors continuing for Yustman as the younger woman takes the fight to her, backing her up repeatedly with hard shot. Odette covering up, giving ground, playing defense to run some clock here, and she's doing that, but, in the meantime, she's taking quite the licking..."
Cassie: "Kara no DOUBT looking to finish here..."
O'Dell: "Sure is. Sitting down on everything, really letting the hands go in spots. Yustman fighting in counter, landing here and there, but all off the back foot and nothing there to really trouble Kara. Front Streeter banging to the body some, but mostly head-hunting..."
McCarthy: "And the ref needs to watch those low blows!"
O'Dell: "Down the stretch in the second. Yustman on the ropes now. Del Toro hooking ribs and banging tummy. Odette tying up. Working the clock. Ref breaks the fighters and Kara right back to work, landing a SOLID right hand at the bell. Another big round for Del Toro as she pitches the shutout."
Tess: "And, extends the lead to 20-17."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Del Toro forward again, but Odette responding in kind now, and Kara's not going to push the issue. Instead, the ladies settle into ranged boxing like we saw early in the first round. Yustman, who's clearly shaken off the worst of the damage now, getting some work done..."
McCarthy: "This is what I said. If they box, Odette wins, period."
O'Dell: "They're boxing at the moment, and Odette's giving as good as she gets, but so is Kara. This is very good tactical stuff right now, as both fighters settle in and get into rhythms. Good movement. Hands out and back quickly. Both brunettes setting up punches well..."
Tess: "Del Toro doing very well to box on even terms with Odette."
O'Dell: 'No doubt about it. We're down under 20 seconds in what's been the first two-way round of the fight. Odette a solid combination. Kara fires back and Odette with ANOTHER flurry that takes us to the bell. Very close in the third, but Yustman has gotten on the board."
Cassie: "And, she cuts the lead to 29-27."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Back to work in the fourth and we're working on the same terms as 'The Deadly Dart' and 'The Body' settle in now, working at range, using the jab to set up right hands. Kara doing a bit of angling to make up for the reach advantage Odette has, and she's doing it well..."
Cassie: "Yustman is VERY slick. Age can erode things like quickness, but not what you're seeing from Odette."
O'Dell: "Absolutely not. That's some serious skill in there, developed via years of in-ring experience, and she's bringing a lot of it to bear on Del Toro right now. Kara still holding her own as the ladies go back-and-forth, back-and-forth, nobody able to gain much of an edge here."
Tess: "And, again, some very good stuff from both fighters."
O'Dell: "No question about that. We're down under thirty seconds in a fast-paced round. Both fighters very, very busy in this stanza and both turning things up a bit late, perhaps hoping to grab the points at the end of this thing. There's the bell and it's close again, but it's Yustman again."
McCarthy: "And Odette's back within a point, 38-37."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Boxing continues and Yustman landing a couple of nice combinations there, throwing Kara onto the defensive. And Odette following up now, preempting her rival with some good, accurate fire. Del Toro uncomfortable for the first time in the fight, Mac, and it shows..."
McCarthy: "I TOLD you. If it comes to boxing, the Dancing Hooker LOSES..."
O'Dell: "Odette really getting into a rhythm now and this fight has turned around in a MAJOR way as Yustman is boxing lead here and Kara can't get much going. Del Toro not hurt, but, for the first time in the fight, she's not giving anywhere NEAR as good as she's getting..."
Cassie: "Got to get off the back foot."
O'Dell: "But having very little success doing it. Kara's landing here and there, but that's about all she can manage as the older brunette continues piling up the points as the final seconds tick away in the first half of this fight. There's the bell, and there's no question it's Yustman and wide."
Tess: "And, we're even at 47."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Second half begins at range with Odette working the jab, boxing. Kara responding in kind, holding her own a little better in this stanza, but Yustman still definitely in rhythm and DEL TORO ROCKS ODETTE AGAIN! Kara with a BRILLIANT one-two bangs a right hand off the chin and the older woman is GOBSMACKED!"
Tess: "Did well to stay on her feet after that shot."
O'Dell: "Sure did, but Kara's looking to remedy that right now. She's winging away with both hands, punishing Odette, backing her up, working her to the ropes. Yustman in a high, tight guard, leaning back into the cables, rolling with punches, trying to ride this out..."
McCarthy: "That hometown ref had better not stop this!"
O'Dell: "Ref definitely looking in closely, but Odette doing enough to keep him at bay, despite the best efforts of Kara, who's going head, body, head, trying to finish this thing. Not looking like happening, though, as the final seconds tick off the clock and there's the bell. Kara and wide, but Odette survives again."
Cassie: "And Kara's back in the lead 57-56."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Into the seventh and Kara pressing forward. She's walking Odette down behind the jab. Yustman's got SOME leg back under her, but not certainly not all of it, and Del Toro knows it. Younger woman sitting down on punches, setting up hard rights with an accurate left..."
McCarthy: "All Odette needs to do is run some clock, get the legs back, and she can take this to the cards and win."
O'Dell: "She's clearly trying to do the former at the moment, and, having some success at it once again and DOWN GOES YUSTMAN! Oh, just an absolute BLOCKBUSTER of a right hand from Del Toro there and Odette is down on her back for the second time in the fight..."
Cassie: "Chamber of horrors..."
O'Dell: "Kara again to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Referee's count at three. Four. Five. Odette staring up at him. Six. Seven. Sitting up at eight. Nine. Not going to happen! TEN! Odette still sitting on the canvas as the count passes her by and it's OVER and your winner by KO7 is Kara 'The Body' Del Toro!"
Tess: "That's a BIG win for Kara. Big."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Kara Del Toro, and Kara, that was certainly an action-packed fight..."
Kara (smiling): "Well. I LIKE action. And, a girl like her, you've got to get AFTER her. Sit back and she might take you to the cards and beat you good. Got to bring the physical. And, I ALWAYS bring THAT."
Tess: "So, what's next for you? Obviously, you're JMDD qualified. There's the beach, maybe an Ice Hotel tournament, and you're getting some traction at lightweight..."
Kara (smiling): "I'm up for whatever management wants to do. Just get me in the ring."
"May of 2012," says Odette with a smile. "Over a decade between my first and second appearances here, which might just be a record.
