5. Emma Watson vs Saoirse Ronan II
Emma:
(31, 5’5, 55:31 FCBA, VIXENs)
Saorise:
(28, 5’6, 13:8 FCBA, Free Agent)
BEFORE:
“I’m still not over my first loss to Ronan,” Emma says with a look of concern during the earlier press conference. “I wasn’t at my best, but I have to admit she won fair and square. For our rematch though, I’ve put in the work required. I’ve trained harder than ever before. And what would be sweeter than beating Saoirse on home turf tonight?”
Saoirse looks confident as she enters the press hall earlier to a chorus of cheers and roar of approval from the home Dublin crowd. The blonde Hollywood actress is one of the few Irish women with such a high profile on the international stage, smiling and waving before she takes her seat at the table.
“Emma put up quite a fight last year… not bad for an Englishwoman,” Saoirse says next, drawing a spattering of laughter from the room. “Look, I’ve nothing personal against her, but I’ve already managed to beat Emma once, and I don’t see any problems doing so again tonight. Maybe one day the rest of the league will take me seriously, but I’m gonna continue knocking them down as they come.”
Saorise typically fights at Bantamweight but finding her Irish luck tested at the beginning of this year after having lost three fights in a row before beating Levin Rambin just last month. Can she continue her streak with another win in this rematch? Or will Miss Watson take her helping of revenge?
Ladies square off at the podium and it’s a cordial but standoffish affair, with both girls coming nose-to-nose and not backing down, meeting each other’s gaze with steady hands on hips and upturned chins. Saoirse is only one-inch taller and Emma’s been trying to bulk up in terms of muscle mass in recent months, meaning both fighters are more similar than before in terms of build. They shake hands after the mutual pose before heading back to their backstage rooms for the final prep.
It’s the final fight on tonight’s card, and Emma and Saoirse have come dressed to kill, representing their respective countries in the continuation of this international card: Emma wearing a red sports bra and white boxing trunks, raising black gloves when her name is announced. In the other corner, Ronan is in a clover-green short trunks and white cut-off sports bra, banging green gloves together as the roar of the crowd clearly shows where their allegiances lies.
Referee gets the nod from both ladies and with a wave of his hand, HERE WE GO with ten rounds of Bantamweight action!
ROUND 1:
Saoirse wastes little time in punching at Watson’s head from the start, using the same tactic as before to try and overwhelm the Brit. Emma shows a little more aggression than normal, but this creates more problems for herself when her advance is met with a barrage of punches from Ronan, who’s adamant at meeting her face to face. Saoirse just consistently sticking her gloves into Emma’s face,, and Emma’s half-hearted advance and then retreat means she’s taking unnecessary damage early, as the Irish girl plants leather after leather glove into her face and body. To end the round, Emma lands several jabs to Ronan’s face from afar, but it’s not nearly enough to redeem her this opening round, allowing Ronan to take it wide.
ROUND 2:
Emma continues to slip away in terms of confidence… instead of sticking to her strengths and counter attacking, she opts to charge in at the start of the second, thinking that she can survive another face-to-face meeting with the taller blonde. Ronan not giving her the satisfaction of being her equal, however, quickly stunning the Brit with a hook to the body before wailing away with more firepower to her arms. Saoirse employs big hooks in close quarters, shoving another swing into Emma’s arms to send her stumbling with a grunt. Watson, however, finally gets the memo, keeping her distance for the rest of the round and successfully tagging Saoirse back on the face with several jabs. Bell rings and while Saoirse would have liked to have routed the Brit for the second time in a row, Emma loses by a smaller margin.
ROUND 3:
Saoirse is still shaking her fist to draw cheers from the crowd as the bell rings for them to start the action. Emma needs to turn the tide or risk humiliating herself for a second time in a row. Ronan comes at her in a straight line, but this time, Watson bobs left and right to avoid an early cross combo, before shoving her own fist right back into Ronan’s face for a grunting OUCH. Saoirse’s expression turns to pure shock as the punch compresses into her nose and lips, and suddenly, more blows keep landing in quick succession! If there’s testimony to how much Emma has grown since she debuted all those years ago, it’s right here, folks. She’s channelling that inner-brawler vibes by keeping Ronan in her crosshairs, hounding her back to the ropes with more leather connecting to the forehead and then swiping low at the Irish girl’s tummy. All this while, Saoirse is trying to regain her composure, hiding her face behind her arms and then swinging back at Emma’s face, hoping to stop her advance. But Watson simply swerves or absorbs most of the return fire, and the two actresses end up in a last-minute clinch with their arms wrapped around the shoulders and heavy breaths on the back for the rest of the round. Watson’s done enough to earn herself a wide comeback, and none too soon, we might add!
ROUND 4:
Ronan still might be the best Free Agent who hasn’t yet been signed to a stable, and despite having every reason to cool off here in the fourth, she marches forward without skipping a beat, resuming her jab combos all over Emma’s arms to send her the message she ain’t backing down. Watson was hoping for a breather but nosiree, not when Ronan lands a quick punt to the nose in the opening seconds and then continues harassing her pretty face for the rest of the first minute. Watson lets out a frustrated growl, however, quickly slipping her head to the side before blasting her way back across the chin with a nice hook, sending Ronan reeling for the first time, and the two women engage in tense fisticuffs for the rest of the minute, protecting their heads while wailing shots off the forearms and of course, off the unprotected body below. Back and forth they drive each other, across the ring and back, but even with Watson’s line in the sand drawn, she can’t make up for that first minute of abuse, and when the bell rings, Ronan has taken it close.
ROUND 5:
But the Irish crowd certainly has underestimated their Brit home invader’s resolve, and if Ronan was expecting Watson to wilt like a kite in the gloomy English weather, she’s sorely mistaken. Here comes Watson again, charging in with her head down and fists up, ready to brawl with Irish luck. She absorbs a stiff blow to the side of the head as Ronan attempts to deter her advance, but another hook sails harmlessly by overhead, allowing the Vixen to bury several shots into the pale tummy, before shocking Ronan to the base of her arms with a final uppercut to throw her back. Ronan reeling but quickly gritting her teeth, reforming that guard fast, and falling back to jabs to the head to stop Emma from coming into her further. Watson takes some punishment in the final minute, her face getting tagged but otherwise that smirk is not going anywhere, and though she may find some difficulty getting in close to brawl, the bell rings and it’s still a good round for the Harry Potter starlet, who edges out a comfortable lead for the first time ever.
ROUND 6:
So far, Saorise is still in the lead, and she knows it. The Irish actress takes it slow and steady this time, hanging back and bouncing light on her feet, hoping to score off Emma’s face some more, maybe open a cut or two off the cheek to sap her foe further of her confidence. Emma has the bright idea of rushing in again though she ain’t very well known for being the close quarters brawler that some of her stablemates are. She gets a cheek or two cratered in from her stubborn assault, scoring several hooks off Ronan’s arms and body but otherwise is unable to pin Saoirse down for long before the blonde girl slips off to the side and regroups. Ronan looks cheery once more as she soars ahead in points, drawing loud woots from the crowd at the sight of Emma rubbing her reddened cheek with one of her gloves on her way back to the corner at the bell. It’s not pretty, but it’s boxing, baby.
ROUND 7:
Ronan tries to end the fight here and now, perhaps emboldened by the crowd’s encouragement and thinking they know better than an experienced fighter in the actual ring. She tries to rush Emma after a minute of jabbing and shovelling combos at her head, but her hooks are again thrown without venom, as Emma simply slips to the side or weaves her head backwards to avoid contact. Saoirse’s worst nightmare comes true as Emma begins her counterattack: a hook barreled across the Irish girl’s face, which shocks her to the side, before a lunging uppercut hits home to the sternum, driving the air from her lungs. Emma continues to push her opponent backwards, slapping more leather into the arms, putting in some power into each hook to break down those defences, scoring yet another snap uppercut to the base of the chin to send Ronan packing off into the ropes with a grunt. So far, no knockdown from either corner, but both women sure know how to punish the other!
ROUND 8:
Ronan now a little wary and weary, breathing hard and wondering how she managed to KO her foe in less than six rounds that last time they met. Instead, we’re heading into the last quarter and Emma seems to be as sturdy as she was in the first. First minute sees both women dancing back and forth, Saoirse afraid of getting in too close after that last shellacking and Emma not wanting to jinx her luck either and end up kissing the canvas. Second minute, however, sees Emma bursting out of her comfort zone, several jabs landed to Saorise face and chest before a right cross is driven straight in to nail her to the mouth. And Ronan’s in trouble! The Irish blonde is backing away, looking a little punchdrunk! And it’s Emma's turn to smell blood! The Brit wastes NO time, rushing in with her fists batting and wailing away at her opponent’s arms and body, shoving more leather into the tummy and ribs before blasting Ronan across the face with a well-placed hook! Ronan lets out a grunt, flailing backwards and hitting the ropes chest-first, before rebounding in a trajectory towards the ground!! It’s the first KNOCKDOWN of the evening as Ronan hits the canvas face-first, and Emma throws her hands in the air with a weak smile, while the Dublin crowd makes their feelings known as well with a chorus of boos. But those quickly convert into cheers at Ronan’s back, intending to get their prized fighter back to her feet with plenty of encouragement. Ronan is doing her best, indeed, finding some footing on a single foot steadied on the ground, but the rest of her body still looking wobbly whenever she tries to extend herself all the way back up. The referee is patiently counting her out by the side, and the brave blonde makes a final push just as he hits the count of 9… but no dice!! She falls back down to her knees with a forlorn expression on her face!! It’s all OVER!!
Official Decision: Emma Watson defeats Saoirse Ronan via KO8!
AFTER:
“Knew I could do it!” Emma laughs to reporters in the immediate post-fight segment. “Saoirse’s one hell of a fighter, and I can’t wait to beat her again when we meet for a third time. For now, I hear we’re heading to Paris next, and I’ve got another party on my mind to spoil…”
Saoirse is all banged up as she’s brought back to her corner after the bell and announcement, looking a little disappointed with her result and making those feelings known to reporters once Emma has left the arena:
“She’s gotten a little better…” Saoirse says, drawing chuckles and laughs. “I’m not giving up though. We’ve won a fight each, so we’ll just have to see who’s the better fighter when we meet for a third outing. Thank you everyone for your support and cheers tonight! I’m leaving with my head held high!”
And we’d like to thank YOU for spending your evening with us, and for attending VIX: Pride & Prejudice @ the National (IRE). This has been the latest instalment of VIX’s international tour, and up next, we’re leaving the gloomy isles of the (once) United Kingdom, and heading for the mainland proper.
