Brie Larson enters the Diamond Boxing Club facility.
She is surprised to not hear the usual racket of training. "Shouldn't Anna already be in the gym at this hour?"
Instead, Brie is greeted by the cacophony of overlapping sounds drifting from down the hall. She opens the door to the conference room to find the Flyweight Champion, Anna Kendrick sitting at the table.
An exasperated Anna cries out, "How am I supposed to pick just one!?!?"
Brie moves to comfort her as she takes a seat at the table. "Breathe, honey... it's ok... What is all this?" Brie motioned to the several TV's, each playing fight tape of a different FCBA boxer.
"Ugh... I hate all this pressure!" Anna points at the folders filled with scouting reports and fight histories scattered on the table. "I have no idea who to challenge this month. When I was on the way up, Benny would help me pick girls that made great matchups, or someone who was at the same zone in the rankings. But now I'm..." Despite herself, Anna hesitated.
Brie Larson looked her square in the eye. Her calm, cool demeanor was in stark contrast to Anna in this moment. "You are the Flyweight Champion. You need to say it. You need to own it."
"I... I am the Flyweight Champion of the FCBA." Anna couldn't suppress a wide smile that wanted to break through on her lips.
"Yes, you are." Brie agreed with a smile. "And the champ gets to choose. Benny, let you pick this opponent on your own, didn't he?" Anna agreed with a nod. "Clever... Don't you see? He wanted you to make the pick because the champ gets to choose."
"But how can I choose when every girl is so deserving?" Anna responded.
"Everyone is going to have an opinion. But you can fight anyone you want. You were ranked 7th when you got the title shot. And you just said everyone here is deserving, so there's no way to choose wrong." Brie eyed the extent of the analysis paralysis that had trapped her teammate. "You know all the girls. Who do you want to fight?"
Anna Kendrick took a deep breath as she considered it. "Well... it looks like most girls in the top ten have been in the title picture for a while. Most girls have held the strap... my championship belt. Or they've at least had a title fight in the recent past. I mean, or maybe I go deep and find a girl on the upswing like I was. Jenna Louise Coleman is a fantastic JMD fighter, but hasn't worked up to the top of the Flyweight ladder. At least not yet. Wow, she would be a great fight at some point."
Brie could see the puzzle pieces start to shift in Anna's head. Kendrick was on a roll now. "Kristen Stewart looked incredible on SNL, but she's coming off a loss to..." Her mind shifted gears. "I'd love to get some revenge on Hayden Panettiere, but she ended up losing to..." She was solving it. "Jessica Lowdnes lost a title shot this year to..." It was all making sense. "And her only losses are to Michelle Williams and Lucy Hale, both deserving girls themselves... But she's beaten so many top ten flyweights. And anyone she hasn't beaten has had a recent title shot. There are some Hall of Famers we would be ignoring, and those girls deserve our respect, but right now it has to be..."
Anna Kendrick felt settled as it dawned on her. It was the right choice. It made sense on paper. But it would mean Anna would have to fight one of the few girls to knock her out. The images of that match flashed through her mind. She tried to push them away and focus on a fresh bout. Tried to imagine a new narative. One where she was the champion, and Anna Kendrick would defend her title against the first girl to offer her a championship bout.
"It has to be Vanessa Hudgens..."
Brie pushed away from the table. "I'll go make the call..."
