Our reporter sits in The Great Room at The Manor watching baseball and sipping cold beverages with Poindexter Del Crunchy and the Man In The Hat.
Reporter: "So, Wiz, what did you think of your Pirates' draft?"
Man In The Hat (shrugging): "Ask me in five years."
Reporter: "OK...that's what people say about football drafts all the time..."
Man In The Hat: "And, they're both right about that, too. Although, there ARE some guys with football and basketball where you KNOW. I mean, Tony Dorsett, anybody knew he was gonna be a star, as long as he had a line that could block for him. Randy Moss. If you watched the guy once, you knew. Magic and Bird? Kareem and Elvin Hayes? Those guys, no doubters. There aren't any of those in baseball."
Pointy: "Because of how far away they are..."
Man In The Hat (nodding): "Right. It's all projection, and that makes it harder. Will the guy develop power? Will he develop a third pitch? Will he be able to play short in the Majors or will he have to move to a corner spot?"
Reporter: "Plenty of that in other sports, too..."
Pointy: "Absolutely, lad, but, thing is, with basketball and football, you're closer to finished products."
Man In The Hat (nodding): "Absolutely. Doesn't mean you don't make mistakes. Every first round of the NFL draft has busts. But, those guys ARE closer, so, there aren't as many variables..."
Reporters: "But, still, mistakes are made. Like with fighters..."
Man In The Hat (nodding): "Exactly, son. If you know what you're lookin' at, like Pointy and I do, well. You know if it's IN there..."
Pointy: "But, what you can NEVER know is if anybody can get it OUT of there."
Man In The Hat (smiling): "Exactly. Now. Let's watch some ball, shall we?"
