Intro:
In a rare case of two women playing the same character fighting each other, both women have played Kate Kane on "Batwoman", is Ruby Rose or Wallis Day the toughest actress to play the role? We find out now here in Detroit's Little Caesar's Arena.
Both women are needing a win to rejuvenate their careers, Ruby for all her fitness and amateur boxing experience hasn't hit the ground running in the FCBA as some expected, Wallis meanwhile was the opposite as she won the 2019 New Blood Tournament, got up into the top 25 in the world, then started to lose her last three fights before finally getting back on the winning side of things on the last PPV.
Before the bout both speak to FCBA Network presenter Lucy Liu over Zoom call, first up Ruby sits on a bench at her stables gym wearing a white sports bra that shows her abs, she is drenched with sweat from training as she gives a quick wave with a taped right fist and a smile.
First up she is asked how she feels about Wallis stepping into the Kate Kane role she left, Ruby answers "good for Wallis, I don't feel any hate if that's what people expect because we've playing the same character, Wallis seems cool enough but this is the fight game, I can't like her till the final bell rings", Lucy nods with a rye smile as she knows from her own experience what Ruby means.
Next question focuses on if Ruby thinks this will be the fight to turn her career around, Ruby sighs before replying "I knew you'd ask that, look I'm proud I have went through the hard school of knocks and not gone for soft touches to start my career, I learn with each fight and get better, Wallis isn't better then anything I have faced, so I am confident my hand will be raised by the end of the night, guess gotta hope there's a fridge in my locker room to chill the beers for my celebration", winking at last part as Lucy chuckles.
Wallis meanwhile is sitting at home it seems, in an office chair as she wears a red dress, blowing a kiss to the camera as she tells Lucy it is an honour to be on the show, after pleasantries are exchanged they get down to business.
Asked how she feels about this fight, Wallis says "Ruby is tough as nails, we've seen that plenty of times in her life, this has been a fight I have wanted for awhile because I think it will be exciting, I know my way around boxing gloves and fighting in general myself", talking about her kick boxing training along with her own career in the FCBA.
The English beauty is then asked about how she feels about replacing Ruby on "Batwoman" with basically does she need to win this fight to completely take the role for herself in peoples eyes, Wallis laughs before replying "well I didn't have to bare knuckle fight anyone for the role so maybe I need to beat Ruby for that reason, no I am confident I'll make this version of the character my own as Ruby made her version, this is simply about which of us is better with the gloves on, if Ruby wanted to make more of it then I'd be ready for that", smiling warmly at Lucy as she nods.
The final question is about her future now she has a stable, Wallis grins as she answers "I can't say I expected to be signed but the Lookout management I heard had been scouting me a while, I'm so excited to work with Yvonne Strahovski, Missy Peregrym in sparring, along with Julie Benz and Nicole frickin Kidman! I am getting giddy thinking about that" waving bye to Lucy when she is finished with the call.
Fight night first through the curtain is Ruby with coach Kelly Hu beside her, she rubs her taped knuckles together as she walks to the ring wearing a black leather jacket, which is taken off with help from Kelly to reveal a black sports bra with red trim, matching trunks and shoes.
Once inside the ring, Kelly ties on Ruby's red gloves, banging her gloves together to test them out, Ruby looks all business as she paces side to side in her corner, Kelly telling her she has this.
Now out comes Wallis with her new coach Nicole, she is smiling as she looks excited to showcase why she got signed up by Lookout, Wallis is wearing a red sports bra, marching trunks and shoes, with white gloves, she has her hair tied into a ponytail.
Getting into the ring, Wallis bows to each side of the ring before heading to her corner, where she gets serious as she takes a deep breath, eyes locked onto her opponent as she goes through her warm up routine.
Waved to the center of the ring by the referee, both women stare intensely at their opponent, bouncing on their toes to stay warmed up, when told to touch gloves, there's a crack of leather as they bang their gloves into their opponent's set, once ready in their corners, the bell rings to start 10 rounds of lightweight action.
Round 1:
At the bell both women step out their corners looking determined, feeling each other out in the opening moments, Ruby trying to step in more it seems compared to the side to side movement of Wallis, both defending these early salvos that come their way pretty well as both know their way around a boxing ring.
Then the first success comes as Wallis tries to be the aggressor, she misses with a straight as Ruby sees her coming in, the Aussie dips under it before hammering in two body shots, the overhand left Rose throws doesn't land flush but it gives Day a warning that her mistakes will be punished.
That success seems to spur on Ruby, who is starting to push the tempo up a notch, getting in closer as she works the body, in return she gets some clipping punches to the side of her head, nothing to worry her so far as Wallis is looking a little tense, maybe nerves showing with the importance of this fight on a personal level.
Finally with a minute to go Wallis lands her best combo so far as she steps back out the way of a right to the body, landing a counter right across Ruby's face, followed by a one-two flush in the center of her opponent's beautiful face to knock her head back, Wallis putting more punches together better as she begins to press forwards.
By the time the bell rings it might be too late to take the round, it does show that some of the skills that Wallis has, with Nicole massaging her arms and legs to loosen her up, reminding Wallis this is just like any other fight she has had, across the ring Ruby nods as she is told that she got lax there at the end.
Round 2:
Banging in more shots through gaps in each others defenses as they open up more, Ruby is looking good when she can close that distance to make it an inside fight, problem is she having is that Wallis is peppering her face with straight punches as the English lass is putting her punches together better.
As Ruby dips down to move to work the body, a right cross smacks near her temple, making her go back a step as Wallis suddenly steps in with a three punch combo following right into the face of the smaller woman, knocking Ruby onto her heels as Wallis takes the center of the ring.
Definitely more confidence being shown by Wallis now, she is controlling the action now as Ruby is throwing just single punches out her guard, Wallis keeping the former model near the ropes at range, which is making Nicole beam as she applauds her new star pupil.
Ruby does manage to slip a jab to move in closer with forty seconds to go, banging in two rights to the body, Wallis landing a left to her cheek in response, both going toe to toe as they grind foreheads, bodies taking the brunt as the crowd stands to roar on these two stunning fighters.
When the round ends they nudge apart with Ruby tapping her chest with her right glove, telling Wallis to bring it as they stare each other down, referee giving them another order to return to their corners, which they do but you can sense the tension between these two proud fighters is growing.
Round 3:
If Ruby was hoping to intimidate Wallis late in the last round, it has worked it seems judging by Wallis coming out hard, banging in several hard one-two combos that knock back the head of Rose, who has a small cut on the bridge of her nose from a right cross that landed across it.
But gamely Ruby moves to the inside by ducking or deflecting a punch, once there she is showing good body work to go with some hard clipping punches up top, Wallis keeping calm under the pressure, giving Ruby little nudges to reopen the gap between them, dodging the uppercuts from Ruby to keep her head on her shoulders so far.
The biggest successes in the round are Wallis's counter punches, Ruby becoming too open at times as she wants to be the dominant force in the ring, leading to her missing and being treated to a hard right or land that smashes across her face to send sprinkles of sweat into the air off her brow.
A double jab lands flush onto the nose of Ruby, who is covering up more as they enter the final thirty seconds, Wallis pressing forwards as she drives Ruby onto the ropes, maybe it was Ruby playing possum though as she lands a beautiful left cross then an uppercut out her guard to knock back Wallis a step, the bell rings before Ruby can build off that, with Wallis winning the round but getting to understand why she needs to be on her toes against a tough opponent like this.
Round 4:
After getting a telling off by Kelly, Ruby looks more focused as she steps out to fight, still she has the issue of the fast hands and range advantage of Wallis to overcome, with the new Lookout star peppering her face with beautiful combos early in the round, making Kelly shake her head in disgust.
Digging in several punches to the body, Ruby is starting to lower the guard of Wallis, who is still landing some of those quick fire shots to keep her back, a feint off Ruby though gives the Aussie a chance to sidestep Wallis, THEN A LEFT HOOK POPS WALLIS BEHIND HER EAR AS AN UPPERCUT TAKES HER LEGS FROM UNDER HER, DOWN TO ALL FOURS GOES DAY!
Oh boy! Nicole looks stunned to see her fighter down as Ruby raises her arms in the air as she goes to the neutral corner, 1...2...3...4.. Wallis shakes her head of any cobwebs as she pushes to sit on her heels while kneeling, 5...6.. She nods at the referee as if to say "she got me there alright" 7...8.. But she pushes to her feet with fists raised wanting more.
Still over half the round to go and here comes Ruby, she is pounding the body of Wallis right away, who fires back but finds herself muscled into a corner, a few overhand shots land clean before Wallis can finally clinch up, Ruby sensing she can win it here is desperately trying to break free with no success, needing the referee to step in to break them up.
Once apart with less then a minute to go now, Ruby still being the aggressor, taking a few clean counters across her face though as maybe Day isn't as badly hurt as it first seemed, Ruby taking them well though as she pushes ahead, landing some cruel looking body shots up until the round ends, what a round for Rose!
Round 5:
After such a bad round Wallis is boxing more defensively, with Ruby now trying to cut off the ring to land more heavy leather, there is some redness forming on the body of Wallis, with both women landing some nice clean shots at midrange, Wallis predominantly headhunting to Ruby's body work now.
An overhand left smacks across the jaw of Wallis, who finds herself now under siege as Ruby is just throwing punch after punch without much coming back, pressed to the ropes Wallis again holds onto Ruby, it's starting to look a mistake for the Lookout crew as Wallis needs the referee to break them up.
You can't seem to question Wallis's toughness though as she is still fighting, Ruby is the one driving the action but Day hasn't went into a shell, she is still firing punches into the face of Rose to stop her overrunning her, by the end of the first half of the round that cut on Ruby's nose is bleeding more as it drips off the end of it.
Ruby is double tough too as she takes a double jab to her face, not backing off as she dips under a right cross to use her shoulder to muscle Wallis onto the ropes again, where she works the body with two short digging punches, then lands an uppercut that if flush might have ended the fight here.
The round comes to a close with Ruby again looking to have done enough, Wallis getting told by Nicole not to give up yet as this fight is still in her hands, Wallis nodding as she gets wiped down, there's a little puffiness around her right cheek from the overhand lefts she took, Ruby meanwhile has some swelling under her left eye as both women are marked up.
Round 6:
Pushing out their corners looking as game as they did when they first entered, both land stiff punches into their targets, Ruby pushing the other pace but still getting clipped around her brows by Wallis, the crowd chanting for both women as they are loving this fight.
Sidestepping Ruby as her back nearly is on the ropes, as Wallis moves to Ruby's left she pounds in a counter right that lands on the jaw, Ruby's head getting turned as suddenly Wallis goes into overdrive with another three punches square into her face to back up the original Kate Kane.
Ruby finding herself on the ropes, trying to fight back but Wallis is finding the cleaner punches, a missed uppercut by Ruby leads to a clubbing right hook slamming into her ear, making Ruby stumble to the side as the first signs of her being hurt are showing.
As much as Ruby is landing in some good punches of her own, she is being outworked by Wallis as the English girls engine is showing itself, more pounding punches snapping back the head of Rose with sweat and blood flying into the air, Nicole looks like she wants to throw punches watching her charge do as she taught her.
At the bell it is a strong reply from Day after being on the back foot the last two rounds, she sits smiling for a few moments as Kidman praises her, but both know they are behind the eight ball right now due to that knockdown, across the ring Ruby spits some blood into a bucket as her left cheek seems to have a cut inside it, Kelly telling her to be smarter, moving her own head to show Ruby what she should be doing.
Round 7:
Banging her gloves together before she comes out her corner, Ruby has her eyes on the prize as she comes out hunting Wallis, who is on the move more to start, both landing jabs as they box around the ring, with Ruby going for an overhand left that Wallis leans out the way of, an uppercut knocks Ruby to her heels, THEN A RIGHT HOOK TO THE TEMPLE SENDS RUBY TO HER RIGHT SIDE!
What a turnaround from Day! She yells "come on!" As she turns to the neutral corner, 1...2...3...4.. Ruby turns to all fours shaking her head like Wallis did, some blood from her cut drips onto the canvas, 5...6.. Pushing to her right foot with her left still kneeling, Ruby watches the count, 7...8... As she gets up there is definitely a wobble to her step, fists are raised as she wants to continue.
Back they go at it with Ruby nearly catching out Wallis with an overhand right that grazed the jaw of the English lass, Wallis landing a double jab into the nose of her opponent to push her back to range as the crowd is on it's feet yelling for their favourite in this back and forth battle.
It seems like Ruby may have shaken the knockdown off as they box through the second minute, Wallis still landing some hard shots square into the face of Ruby, who waves her to hit her harder as that never say die attitude of Rose is perfectly on show here.
Less then forty five seconds to go, Wallis steps back out the way of a left cross before pounding in a counter right that lands to the temple, Ruby stumbles back several steps as the referee is watching close, WALLIS RUSHES IN WITH A LEFT HOOK THAT SENDS RUBY DOWN TO THE CANVAS WITH A THUD!
What a round for Wallis this has turned into! She jumps for joy as the referee has to nudge her aside, kneeling down to check on Ruby, THE REFEREE DOESN'T BOTHER TO COUNT RUBY AS SHE IS OUT COLD!
Winner Wallis Day KO Round 7
After:
First thing Wallis does is rush back to her corner, hugging Nicole as her fans chant her name loud enough to echo in the arena, what a stunning comeback from the knockdown for Day, she showed grit and her skills to pull this fight back from the brink of defeat to get her first win under the Lookout Banner.
While Ruby has another horrible knockout defeat after doing so well, the ringside doctor is able to bring her safely around as she is helped to sit up, Kelly checking on her too as Ruby blinks to try to clear her head of the fog, wondering what the hell happened there.
After a minute Ruby is helped to her feet by the doctor and Kelly, who helps to get her out the ring as a round of applause rings out for Ruby, even the Lookout corner with Wallis applaud Ruby for a great effort, it won't mean much though as Rose keeps putting in these performances before losing, she needs to find that one thing she is missing to finally get on a run of results.
In the ring once Wallis has had a drink and gotten on a blue T-shirt that says "Lookout Boxing, where champions are made" in white letters on the front on her, she heads to the center of the ring for the final result to be announced, blowing kisses to her supporters with her right hand as her left is lifted high up to make it official that she wins again.
Wallis gives the referee a hug before she leaves the ring with her new crew, Nicole putting her right arm around her shoulder, telling Wallis that there will be bumps along the road but she is sure that she can be a world champion, Wallis looking up slightly in awe of the legend, beaming hearing such praise of her potential, with the lightweight division being so packed, Wallis will need to work her butt off to achieve that, if you follow her career then you know hard work is something she enjoys so keep watch on her.
