Natalie Dormer vs Piper Perabo
(Writing: LMW / Results: Lookout!)
Natalie Dormer
(39, 5’6, 10-13-1 FCBA, League of Mighty Women)
Piper Perabo
(44, 5’6, 18-18 FCBA, Free Agent)
Pre-Fight: We are moving onto the penultimate fight of the evening as the League of Mighty Women’s most experienced fighter, Natalie Dormer, battles an old rival of hers, Piper Perabo. Their previous fight was back in 2014 and it was bitterly contested as a result of their heated exchange before the fight and Piper ended up victorious after the referee stepped in to save Natalie from further punishment in round 9. Of course, Natalie would be looking to avenge this defeat and a victory here would be a good birthday present for the actress, who turned 39 last week. Piper on the other hand, would be looking to double up on her wins against her British rival.
We are going back to Layla Anna-Lee, who is covering the event tonight for the FCBA Network and she is with Natalie now. “Belated happy birthday, Natalie! How is life at your new stable?” Natalie gives one of her famous smirks as she goes “Thank you, Layla! I feel great! I’ll be honest though, things weren’t going well when I was a free agent, so I know that I needed a change and the opportunity presented itself when I got the call from the LMW. Both the atmosphere and the work ethic of my new stable already had a positive effect on me, so expect to see a more mature fighter, in and out of the ring.” Layla goes on to ask about the rematch as Natalie gets serious and keeps it short and simple. “As I said, I’m a more mature fighter now, so it will be different this time.”
Layla is over at the opposite locker room now as Piper gives her opinions on the fight. “Last time, Natalie ran her mouth before the fight and I made sure that I shut it properly throughout it. It has been some time after my last fight, but I trained hard as I always do, so I’m ready to defeat her again. Now, she says that she is changed, but I remember what she was like back then and the things she said. So, I won’t believe her until she proves it with her actions, not just her words.”
Natalie comes out first with LMW’s head trainer, Ali Landry, besides her. She isn’t getting as warm of a welcome as her stablemates as it looks like the crowd also remembers her previous shortcomings and her behavior, especially in her first match with Piper, so they might need some convincing before they give her their full support again. Not only the fans cheering for her are noticeably fewer, but some of them are actually chanting her coach’s name as Natalie looks a bit taken aback from all this. Ali leans over, cups her hand over Natalie’s ear and whispers something to her, which Natalie responds by nodding and putting on a slight smile as she seems a bit more relaxed.
Natalie is wearing a forest green sports bra and matching trunks with black gloves and shoes, while her hair is in a ponytail.
Piper comes out with her coach right behind her. She is all smiles as she actually gets a louder cheer from the crowd compared to the LMW fighter, which is a first for tonight. She waves at the fans and pumps her fists before entering the ring.
She is wearing a burgundy sports bra with matching trunks with white gloves and shoes, while her hair is also in a ponytail.
Both fighters come to the center of the ring to listen to the referee’s instructions and after that they touch gloves without issue, but with a cold stare from each fighter. We are ready for 10 rounds of bantamweight action.
Fight: Round 1: Both fighters start things off with a controlled approach as neither want to give an early opening to their opponent. They test each other’s range with either a single or a double jab, but not committing to full on attacks with combinations just yet. As the round progresses, they each land a handful of punches, but it has been a quiet round otherwise with not much to separate them on points. The crowd, which expected sparks to fly considering the first fight between the two, is getting a bit restless with this calculated approach from both sides.
During the break, Ali urges Natalie to increase her efforts. “You’re the younger fighter and we trained hard for this, so you should be the one to increase the pace. She can go all night with the current pace, you got to put her to test. You want the crowd to get behind you again, right? Give them a reason in the next round!”
Round 2: Natalie is looking to open things up in this round as she ups her pace and goes on the attack early on. Piper is put on the back foot with sudden change of pace and gets into a defensive stance. Natalie comes forward with a double jab which misses, but her follow up cross lands perfectly, driving Piper back. She changes levels as she continues her attack with a left hook to the ribs and a right uppercut to the midsection. This is what the fans have been waiting for in the first round, so they show their appreciation with a huge roar.
Natalie spends most of the round on attack as she looks confident after her big start to the round. Piper gets the hang of the new pacing in the last minute of the round though and she goes on the counterattack by ducking the Brit’s jab and gets inside to unload on her opponent’s midsection. Natalie steps back and they stand and trade from range until the bell rings. The last minute evened things up a bit, but the round still goes to Natalie, who goes on top on the scorecard.
Round 3: Natalie is on the attack once again as soon as the bell rings as she is looking to build up on her success in the last round. Piper is still in a more defensive mode, but she isn’t backing down either. Natalie ends up landing the cleaner shots in the first minute, but nothing that does significant damage. Piper starts working her way inside in the second minute to work the body and evens things up.
As we enter the last minute of the round, Natalie goes on the attack with a one-two combination, but Piper sways and lands a perfect uppercut on the Brit’s solar plexus, catching her completely off guard. Piper keeps driving her gloves into her stunned opponent’s stomach, but as she decides to go up, Natalie clinches with her to avoid further damage and buys herself some time to recover. After the referee separates them, Natalie tightens her guard until the bell rings, not letting Piper to land any other big shots. She survives it, but it was a big round for Piper, which looked like a sequence from their first encounter.
Ali lectures her fighter between the rounds. “That was a good save with the clinch. You made a mistake, paid for it, but you survived. Don’t linger on it, but… you cannot leave your body open like that! We watched the tape together. That’s how she got you in the first fight! Be careful not to give those openings when attacking.”
Round 4: Unlike the last two rounds, Natalie is coming out with a more defensive mindset this time, while Piper is more willing to take initiative. Natalie lands a few punches as Piper works her way in and she scores with some counters while fighting on the inside, but Piper still comes out on top as she forces Natalie on the back foot at the end of each exchange. Another round for Piper, but Natalie’s defense kept her out of trouble and made it a closer one.
As Natalie sits on the stool with ice packs applied to her reddened body during the break, Ali keeps giving her tactics. “She is still winning the inside battles and as you step back, she catches you on your way out. She might not get you in trouble this way, but it is a bad look for the judges. Get physical to create some separation in these inside exchanges and go off with your own attack.”
Round 5: Piper is on the attack once again after winning back to back rounds and getting ahead on the scorecard. Natalie is on the defense, but she seems composed. Piper eats a double jab on the way, but she gets inside to blast Natalie’s sides with a couple of hooks. However, instead of stepping back like she did in the past rounds, Natalie uses a shoulder bump to create some space and hit her opponent with a short uppercut to the body and then go up top with a right hook. Piper ends up stepping away from the exchange as the Brit’s new tactic caught her by surprise.
Natalie puts on the pressure as she initiates another exchange, not giving Piper any time to recover. She forces her opponent back with a jab to the body and a jab to the face. She goes to work on the inside afterwards with a few hooks to the body and another shoulder bump followed by an uppercut to Piper’s chin. The Texan backs up to the ropes and with nowhere to go, she tightens her guard as Natalie blasts her with combinations. After a few big shots goes through her guard, Piper clinches with her opponent to protect herself, but Natalie pushes her to the side and goes off with another double jab-straight combo. Piper doesn’t look steady on her foot, but she protects her head, bites down on her mouth guard and takes a few more punches to the body as the bell rings. Piper barely survives the round, but there will be a huge swing towards Natalie on the scorecard after this one.
Ali praises her fighter for a great round, while Piper slumps on her stool at the opposite corner as her coach tries to motivate her.
Round 6: Piper is keeping her head up as the round starts, but her movement is sluggish, while Natalie circles around her opponent like a predator stalking its wounded prey, ready to pounce. Natalie teases her opponent with single jabs as she keeps circling her. She then feints with another jab and instead slips a big right cross through her opponent's guard! As Piper’s nose starts to bleed with that shot, she covers her face with her gloves, which Natalie responds by two nasty hooks to the ribs! Those blows completely open up Piper’s guard and a right uppercut to her chin sends her crushing down to the mat! Natalie heads to the neutral corner with her usual smirk. 1…2…3… Piper is lying on her back, covering her eyes with the back of her gloves as she tries to clear her head 4…5…6… she rolls to her side and uses her elbow to prop her head up, blinking rapidly to clear her sight 7…8… with her head still spinning, she rolls on to her back again 9…10 Piper is still lying on her back as the count passes!
Official Result: Winner via KO6, Natalie Dormer!
Post-Fight: Piper needs a minute before she can get back to her feet and after that she gets cleared by the medical team. As she heads towards her corner, Natalie comes over to check up on her. Looks like they are exchanging some positive words and then they hug it out. It might not be the warmest hug and they probably won’t become friends after this, but at least it feels like they buried the hatchet and ended things on a positive note after what happened years ago.
Natalie takes the microphone after she had her hand raised. “She is always a tough opponent and it was a bit harder than I would have liked it to be, but I’m happy that I was able to come out on top this time. I’m also happy that we kept it civil this time and we cleared things out after the fight as we had a nice moment back there. I realize that I need some proving to do, not just through my words, but my actions and my performance in the ring before I can convince you that I changed, but hopefully you got a taste of it tonight.” Natalie’s natural smirk still makes it hard to tell if she is being genuine about it or not, but it looks like fans are happy with what they saw tonight as they celebrate Natalie’s victory more enthusiastically compared to how they greeted her before the fight. She waves to the fans before exiting the ring, looking happy as she achieved both a victory and a better standing with the fans with this rematch.
