Intro:
We kick off tonight's FNL card with two former tennis players who started as hard fought rivals on the court, to down right hating each other off it, Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki get to lace up their boxing gloves once again to settle things here in the Soctiabank Arena in Toronto.
This feud really heated up when Maria Sharapova was coming back from her ban off the court, Caroline made it known that Maria getting a wildcard to the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Maria would fire back that Caroline was just a journey woman player, setting the hatred in.
Even when Maria admitted she admired Caroline's career when the Dane's career was coming to an end, reports in private when Maria was asked is the feud over, the simple answer was like hell it is.
The last time they played on court was a win for Maria in the Australian open in 2018, winning 6-4 4-6 6-3 to beat her rival on the court, finishing their rivalry in that sport with a record of seven wins to Caroline's four.
In the ring it was a very similar matter as Maria defeated Caroline back in 2013 when Maria pummelled the then 23 year old Caroline till the referee had to stop it in the fourth round, so you will ask how did we get to this point?
Well rumours of a boxing rematch begun after their retirement from Tennis last year, both seemed up for getting back at each other, the story goes that the split on the money being offered was argued back and forth till both walked away from the negotiations.
Returning to the ring on Christmas day, Maria got a big shock when Kate Bock knocked her out in one round, that led to Caroline posting on social media a photo of Maria on her back in the ring with the caption "nothing new here then" getting social media talking of course.
Maria replied with pictures of her trophies with the caption "which one of us was a real winner and which one was a fluke" back and forth they went till Caroline challenged Maria to a fight, the FNL committee rushed to get this fight on tonights card.
Neither spoke to the media before the fight, they showed how much they wanted to win by shutting themselves away in training and her tonight they wouldn't let interviewers talk to them, their actions would do all the talking.
Fighting time, out first comes Maria wearing a red sports bra with navy blue trim, matching trunks and shoes, navy blue gloves, her hair tied back into a ponytail as she walks down the aisle with a serious look that any tennis fan will recognize.
Stepping through the ropes, Maria bangs her gloves together as she jogs to her corner, bouncing on her toes as she shadow boxes, her coach telling her to keep on top of Caroline and she will wilt, seeing a repeat of the first fight in their minds.
Out comes Caroline with her coach behind her, she waves to the fans with a smile, showing more of her bubbly personality, though her demeanor changes when she gets beside the ring and sees Maria.
Jogging up the ring steps wearing a white sports bra, matching trunks with her surname in gold letters on the waistband, white boots with gold trim, white gloves, her hair tied into a ponytail too, she bounces on her toes at the center of the ring, her right arm in the air as she acknowledges the cheers from the crowd, then heads to her corner to warm up.
Coming to the center of the ring, their eyes lock intensely as Caroline looks up at Maria, the referee keeping close as they go through the final instructions, when they are told to touch gloves they hammer them into their opponent's set.
Jogging back to their corners, looking at each other with their gloves raised, the crowd chanting for their favourite as the coaches give them final pieces of advice, the bell rings to start 10 rounds of 132lbs catchweight action.
Round 1:
The differences in style on show early on, Maria is very much like her playing career on the front foot, trying to push back her opponent, Caroline more patient as she moves around on her toes, happy to give ground to land a pinpoint counter.
The opening thirty seconds are tensely fought as Maria looks to use her jab more to close that gap, after walking into punishment in your last fight, it tends to focus your mind, with Caroline looking comfortable with the pace.
Drilling a one-two square into the abs of Sharapova makes Caroline smirk, as she moves back though a right smacks her to the side of the head, a jab pushes her back as Maria takes that moment of lost concentration and uses it for herself.
Around the outside of the ring goes the great Danish fighter, Caroline finding herself being bullied as she covers up, Maria more aggressive now she has Wozniacki where she wants her, beating the younger woman around her flanks.
With less then a minute to go now, Caroline tries to get out from behind her guard, Maria spots it as she steps back out the way of an overhand left, slamming a firm straight into the bridge of her rival's nose to make her cry out, putting the pressure right back on as now she is landing more right into the face of Caroline.
The round comes to a close with Maria jogging back to her corner with her right arm in the air to show everyone she won that round, Caroline bangs her gloves together in a sign of her frustration at being bullied once again by the Russian superstar.
Round 2:
Looking more her natural self as she comes back out for round two, Maria is trying to drive back Caroline early on, missing more though as the Danish fighter looks to have a better defence then their first fight, moving her head more to dodge the headhunting strikes from Maria.
In fact a missed right by Maria leaves her open to two quick fire left hooks under her ribs, an uppercut just misses as Maria seemed to smell that danger coming this time, there is a little bit of a worried look on Maria's face about that punch.
Back to drilling her jab at the head of Caroline, who is looking more relaxed herself, countering more as Maria is looking a little sloppy, like her confidence isn't where it should be and it is affecting her at the worse possible time in a legit match.
Which causes Maria to miss with a left hook, Caroline coming over the top with an overhand right square into the side of Maria's head, now driving back Sharapova to the ropes as they enter the final minute, banging away at the toned body of the older woman with ripping hooks that have Maria whining out.
Pushing back Caroline as she moves off the ropes, Maria lands some good punches square into the face of an overly aggressive Wozniacki, who is kept back at range for the final twenty seconds till the bell rings to end the round, Caroline mirroring Maria's actions last round by heading to her corner with her right arm in the air to cheers from her supporters to show this was her round, arguably her first against Maria in six rounds between them.
Round 3:
There seems a tenseness to Maria as she isn't pressing as much as she usually does, allowing Caroline more chances then she needs offered to come inside to work, forcing some heated exchanges on the inside where Maria looks uncomfortable.
Pushing back Wozniacki, Sharapova does land a good strong double jab to the top of Caroline's head, using it to start pushing her back to the outside of the ring, Maria's coach clenching their fists as they look visibly worried too.
Especially when as Caroline is near the ropes Maria throws a wild right hook that finds air, instead Caroline ducks under it before landing a right to the solar plexus of the older woman, that has Maria groaning as she got some wind taken out her sails.
Her mood getting worse when an overhand left smacks square onto her jaw, suddenly Maria has water flooding into her boat as she is sinking under fists, Caroline taking over a decades worth of anger out on her with hooks up top that is reeling Sharapova to the ropes.
Holding desperately onto Caroline, Maria almost is looking at the referee to help her out, Caroline still bangs in some rights to the body when she works it out the grip of Maria, with the end of the round forcing them apart with Sharapova looking a little scared by what is happening.
Round 4:
Dancing on her toes as she looks for a way past Maria's defences now, Caroline is chomping at the bit to take Maria down, nearly lunging into a left hook that she just spots in time to get her right up to protect herself, the mouse is suddenly chasing the cat.
Maria trying to find some fighting spirit comes back at Caroline, she is surprisingly sloppy in her execution, finding thin air more then her opponent as she is loading up too much, so much so that CAROLINE SLAMS AN UPPERCUT UNDER THE CHIN OF MARIA TO OPEN HER UP TO A LEFT HOOK THAT SENDS MARIA TUMBLING TO HER BACK!
The crowd were almost all chanting timber seeing the lanky Sharapova go down! 1...2...3...4... Maria shakes her head as she blinks, 5...6... Pushing to her elbows as she almost looks like she doesn't even wanna try to get up, 7...8.. Deciding it seems to just lay back flat as she covers her face with her gloves, 9...10 that's it! Sharapova is counted out!
Winner Caroline Wozniacki KO Round 4
After:
Another stunning knockout loss for Maria, who has the pleasure of Caroline now standing over her screaming "that's for all the people you cheated in this ring and on the court!" Giving Maria a kick in her side to cause the defeated woman to roll to her left side holding her stomach.
Heading back to her corner with her arms raised, this has been a long time coming for Caroline, finally in this ring to get revenge on Maria, all the words exchanged, all the hate led to this rematch, now she can tell the world she battered Maria as it became one sided in the end.
For the loser, Maria is slowly helped to her feet, looking a little rubbery legged as she sobs, embarrassed by this defeat as she puts her head down, the obvious question is how much did Kate Bock take out of Maria, that was a shell of her best tonight no doubts about that.
All Maria can do though is watch Caroline head to the center of the ring, the winner getting her hand raised by the referee as she is beaming, Maria shaking her head before she is helped out the ring and to the backstage area.
The winner blows kisses to each side of the ring to show her love for her supporters, posing for the cameras with her hands on her hips and a big grin, Caroline tells the cameras "anyone wants to fight me you know where to find me" nodding to them before she steps out the ring.
A big personal win for Caroline tonight, now they are one win a piece, maybe a rematch is in order at one of the big tennis city's, it might depend on if Maria can cure her ills after her two defeats, for now the champagne is on Wozniacki tonight.
