The opening bout tonight here in Fantasy Springs Casino in California sees an interesting clash between the German fighter Toni Garrn against Canada's Kate Bock, which of these two up and coming fighters can step up to the plate with a win to start their year off?
Their form coming into this fight isn't much to cheer about, only winning once in her last three, though she did beat Caroline Austin in her last fight, while Kate has failed to win her last three since winning the New Blood tournament in 2017, a win is needed badly by both women.
The Black Eagle boxing manager/coach Gina Wild spoke for Toni to the FCBA Network's Layla Abby-Lee, telling her "I've been looking at the FCBA for awhile and Toni is going to be our main hope here when we can get her the right fights, the lack of real German fighters here is astounding" shaking her head.
"But the way the welterweight division suddenly has a spot light on it, well now is the time for Toni and me to strike, I don't get the press I deserve in the BBU, hopefully your show and Tractorpull give me a fair shake" Gina adds as she clearly hasn't met Tess Valmore yet.
Kate on the other hand talks to Alicia Atout in her locker room, getting her hands wrapped as she sits with her coach, Kate tells the interviewer "tonight I rebuild myself back to the fighter I should have been, winning that tournament three years ago might have actually been the worse thing for me, I suddenly went from driven to succeed to believing I had made it, that won't happen again" clenching her fists to make sure the wraps are not too tight.
Turning to Alicia, Kate continues "Toni doesn't worry me one bit, she has never done anything in the BBU, her coming here smells of desperation, I'm happy to send her back to Germany with her tail between her legs and two black eyes as a reminder to other fighters that I am here to be the best" turning back to her coach after as Atout is asked to leave so Bock can finish her preparations.
Fighting time, out first comes Toni with Gina, the leggy model struts down the aisle like she is on the catwalk, her smile radiating as her supporters are telling her to kick Kate's arse, Gina promising them that she will.
The German beauty steps into the ring wearing a green sports bra, matching trunks, shoes and gloves, her hair is tied into a ponytail as she heads to her corner, fist bumping Gina before she goes through her punching drills to warm up.
Next out comes Kate with her coach behind her, she gets a loud cheer as plenty of her supporters have clearly crossed the border, she blows kisses to them as she walks down the aisle, looking excited to be back in the ring after a break.
The Canadian stunner is wearing a red sports bra, red trunks with black stripes down the sides, black gloves and shoes, while her hair is also tied into a ponytail, climbing into the ring where she thuds her gloves together in her corner, pacing side to side as she wants at Toni.
The referee brings the fighters together, chesting up to each other as they exchange ice cold looks, neither backing up when they press into their opponent, the referee needing to break them apart before it kicks off prematurely.
Touching gloves up with their opponent to show respect, they return to their corners with a few last words from their coaches, the referee signals for the bell to ring, starting 10 rounds of welterweight action.
Round 1:
Starting off behind well timed jabs, Kate has to find a way to score on the chin of her taller opponent, the early going shows the issues she has to deal with as Toni's extra reach over her is allowing for her ramrod punches to smack into her head to disrupt her rhythm.
The Canadian fighter is looking a little tense, not moving her upper body enough, which is allowing Toni to control the pace as they open up with more punches, Kate getting clocked with a jab/right cross flush across her face.
After a bad opening minute, finally Bock starts to move her head more, slipping a few punches before landing her first good punches of the round, a left cross/uppercut combo pushes back the lanky German fighter as Kate steps after her.
The pace quickening as Kate is crowding Garrn, forcing her into more exchanges as punches slap across faces, Toni takes two hard shots to the body before an overhand left clips across her chin, back she goes to the ropes as Kate goes to work on her body.
The final moments of the round sees Toni groaning as hooks hammer her sides, when the bell rings Gina is dumbfounded what went wrong after such a strong start, telling off Toni for not being proactive enough as she sits on her stool.
Round 2:
Kate getting after Toni more right away, maybe her nerves are disappearing after such a bad run in the ring, forcing the action in closer as Toni looks to be struggling in the inside exchanges, body especially taking the brunts of Bock's early attacks.
Nudging back Kate, Toni lands a stiff left/right cross combo to the cheeks of her opponent, getting away from the ropes as she doubles up her jab, pressing back Kate to the outside of the ring as Garrn now starts to look like a true big girl fighter.
Keeping Kate more at a safe distance as they trade, the better punches coming from Toni now as she loads up more on her right, her left acting as a shield to disrupt the attacks of the smaller fighter, her right slamming through the mitts of Bock to her face.
Reddening up the cheeks of Kate, Toni is showing her power when she unleashes it, Kate needing to clinch after a clubbing right to the side of her head, the Canadian fans booing as they want their fighter to get at Toni more, not realising how hard it is to do against someone as pinpoint accurate as Garrn can be.
When the round comes to an end Gina is much more happier, telling Toni "that's my girl! Wunderbar" which across the ring Kate is being told to not let Toni get too far off the leash, she needs to keep in close and cut her down.
Round 3:
Boxing around the ring center with both having some success, Kate able to move in closer to clip away at the body of Toni, before being nudged back and met with stiff straight punches into her face.
Kate needing to cover up more tightly as Toni is throwing more combinations, trying to break the smaller fighter down as she steps after her more, most of the punches though are well defended by Bock as she moves around the ring.
Problem for the Bock supporters is that she can't seem to get out of first gear, Toni is outworking her right now, stopping Kate from finding any real rhythm as she can't get out from behind her guard to really open up her elbows.
It takes with less then forty seconds to go for Bock to see her opening, dipping under a left cross to slam in a straight to the abs of Garrn, who groans out before getting clipped across her chin by an overhand left as she tries to back off.
Driving Toni back into a corner by basically bull rushing to Gina Wilds protests, Kate starts unleashing multiple hooks into the sides of her grimacing opponent, Toni tries to clinch up as it gets scruffy with Kate not wanting to be denied this chance to strike.
At the bell the referee has to work hard to break them apart, eyes burning holes through each other as Toni is clearly not happy with the way Kate basically shoved her into the corner, Gina yelling at the referee as another member of the Black Eagles coaching staff has to take care of Toni, almost forgetting Toni was firmly controlling the round till that point.
Round 4:
That late rally seems to have sparked something in Kate, she is switch hitting now perfectly, targeting upstairs and downstairs in combos as Toni can't seem to pin her down with her piston like punches.
Instead Toni gets whacked across her face with a right hook, Kate smacks her onto the ropes with another left/right body shots that has her hissing out, this time getting a firm clinch on Bock, who is trying to break free, nearly leading to them tripping up as feet get tangled together.
Broken apart Toni gets her rhythm going to the delight of her corner, slamming a beautiful double jab/straight combo square into the face of the overly anxious Kate, now finding herself being herded towards the ropes by a vengeful looking Garrn.
But as they come into the final minute, Toni misses with an uppercut as Kate blocks it on her forearm, then strikes over the top with a right hook on the jaw of the German fighter, Kate quickly follows with a left hook up top before a follow up left slams under the ribs of Garrn to make her grimace.
Hammering Toni back to the ropes, Kate looks in real dominant form now, Toni trying to cover up but the changing levels of attack from Kate are giving her real issues, Gina yelling at her to clinch as she nearly climbs on the apron to do so if not for her fellow staff warning her to stay down.
The round comes to an end with Toni looking worn down, red marks on her sides as Gina is nearly tearing her hair out over that beating her fighter took, in the opposite corner the mood is much more relaxed, Kate thudding her gloves together as the first time in a long while she looks fired up to really hurt an opponent.
Round 5:
Showing she isn't done yet, Toni comes out landing several crisp punches as Kate is a little too open, taking the punches around her face as Toni is letting her come at her, for such a bad round last time Toni is showing her own fighting spirit.
Kate though shows her abilities to adapt, biding her time more till she sees her chance, parrying a straight then throwing a jab square into the solar plexus of her opponent, Toni gasps out as that looks to have landed right on the sweet spot.
Now the hammer fists return as Toni's face gets knocked side to side by Kate's hooks, getting beaten into a corner, AN UPPERCUT LIFTS TONI ONTO HER TIP TOES BEFORE SHE SLIDES DOWN THE TURNBUCKLES ONTO HER BACKSIDE WITH HER HEAD DOWN!
Pumping her fists in the air with a big smile, the relief on Kate's face tells a lot as she heads to the neutral corner, 1...2...3...4.. Toni is groaning but not moving, 5...6...7.. Her gumshield falls onto her chest before landing on the canvas between her legs, 8...9...10 Toni might be snoozing to the count of one hundred, it's over!
Winner Kate Bock KO Round 5
After:
What a way to start the year off for FNL bouts! Toni gamely gave Kate trouble early on, but it's Bock who is jumping for joy after a beautiful barrage has put her opponent's lights out, she turns to her fans with arms in the air looking like a large weight has been taken off her back.
Gina on the other hand looks to the heavens cursing what bad luck she has now, kneeling down moments later next to Toni to give her some smelling salts, the beaten model blinking when she wakes up, wondering what time of day it is as her clock was well and truly cleaned.
The ringside doctor checks over Toni as Kate shows no concern for her, too busy celebrating outside the ring now with as it turns out family members, hugging them as they tell her how proud they are of her, the water works coming for them as Kate hands them her gloves to keep as a reminder of tonight.
The other side of this equation sees Toni being helped out the ring, she gives a nod to her fans as they applaud her but it must be heartbreaking losing to someone on a losing run like Kate was, especially when Toni looked great through two and three, she couldn't keep her foot on Kate's throat though and now is going to get tests to see if she is OK.
The winner is ushered back into the ring, smiling as she blows kisses to her fans, tears still running down her eyes as the importance of this win isn't just purely personal, tonight might be the turning point of her boxing career.
Getting her hand raised by the referee to a loud roar from her supporters, Kate can be seen mouthing "thank you" as she doesn't seem able to find her voice, wiping the tears away as her coach pats her on her back.
Leaving the ring with her coaches, this was the best Kate has looked since she won the New Blood tournament, adding a few extra wrinkles it seems to her game, can she use this win to move up the rankings to where she finally fulfils the potential people saw in her three years ago?
