Albuquerque, New Mexico
Once again, boxing media had been called to the very same conference room at the Hotel Andaluz, where just a few days ago the FCBA’s latest stable had been introduced. Again, the stage had been set up with a podium front and center, but this time there were a grand total of seven chairs arranged in a line behind that podium.
Roughly a minute before the announced time of the press conference, the door opened. Dennis Duke led the way in, his already announced signings of Isabella Gomez and Caylee Cowan trailing just a little behind. The three promptly took to the stage, blonde and brunette taking seats at opposite ends of the stage. Given the tone of Cowan’s remarks toward her stablemate, a certain frostiness between the two did not catch many observers by surprise.
Mr. Duke took to the podium.
“Hello again, everybody,” he began, “and Happy Thanksgiving. Well, I said we would be back here when we had more to announce. And I hope you will all soon learn that I am a man of my word. Today, we are gathered to introduce the final two members of Left Turn Knockouts initial line-up, as well as to introduce our training staff. First off, we have one more newcomer to the FCBA to present. Now, at 32 years of age, she might be a little older than most when they’ve debuted here, but that doesn’t mean she’s new to the sport. She just might be Canada’s best kept secret. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome… Ms. Skye Sweetnam.”
To a burst of camera flashes, another woman stepped into the room. She stood about 5’3”, with full, pouty lips, strikingly fair skin, and even more strikingly purple hair. She gave Duke a quick hug, then turned to the microphone. “Didn’t anybody tell you?” she asked, sporting an infectious, mischievous grin. “What’s up, guys? I know many of ya might not know me, but that’s gonna change. Like Dennis said, I’m Skye, but you can also call me ‘Painbow.’ Cause I’m definitely gonna bring the pain…”
Slipping her fingers into her purple locks, she brought a few strands of hair in front of her face.
“… and you never know what color this is gonna be when I’m bringin’ it.”
With that, the Canadian import took a seat next to her fellow Flyweight, Isabella Gomez, while Mr. Duke once again stepped forward.
“And that brings us to the final member of our active contingent,” he said. “As you’ll recall, when we gathered last week, while I stressed the importance of bringing fresh blood into any organization, I also noted the importance of veteran leadership. As much as I believe in all three of these women, and I do, I wanted someone on hand with a solid FCBA resume. We talked to many people, but in the end, and with all due respect to all the women we engaged with, one in particular impressed us. Not just with her accomplishments to date, but with her desire to do more. To do better. As impressive as she has already been, we believe—and she believes—that she has not yet fully realized her true potential. But she is still young enough to do so, and with our resources behind her, we believe she will. Ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce… Ms. Alyson Michalka.”
There was definitely something of a buzz that went through the assembled reporters when the former Bantamweight champion stepped into the room. The signing of Michalka certainly represented something of a ‘get’ for the fledgling stable.
“Thank you, Mr. Duke,” Aly said, before turning her attention to the media. “Hope none of you thought you’d seen the last of me,” she added with a sly grin. “I definitely had a few options when my last contracted lapsed. But it only took a few minutes talking to Mr. Duke, hearing his passion for the sport, and seeing what he could put behind me, for me to see that this is where I needed to be going forward. I’m looking forward to winning another Bantamweight title, or perhaps even adding a Lightweight belt to my collection, hopefully sooner than later.”
Ambition stated, Michalka took a seat beside her fellow blonde, Caylee Cowan.
“I’ll stop short of calling that a guarantee,” Dennis observed when he returned to the podium. “Just think of it as a mission statement. At any rate, now that we’ve introduced our fighters, I wanted to take a moment to present to you the women who’ll be tasked with helping them achieve excellence in the FCBA. Now, none of these women need introductions. You know them all, and quite well, I suspect. First off, I want to introduce our Head Trainer. She will oversee the entire organization, but will place a particular focus on coaching Ms. Michalka and Ms. Cowan. And as a four time Bantamweight champion and former Lightweight champion, we believe she is uniquely qualified for that task. Everyone, please welcome… Ms. Denise Richards.”
The veteran blonde stepped onto the stage, and shook Dennis Duke’s hand. Unlike the other women that he had introduced, she did not make a move toward the podium, and instead took a moment to pose with Duke for the assembled photographers. Afterward, she took a seat beside her new charge, Alyson Michalka.
“Also joining our staff,” Dennis resumed, “this woman will be tasked with shaping both Ms. Gomez and Ms. Sweetnam into champion Flyweights. And we have every faith in her ability to do so, not just because she herself is a former Flyweight champion, but because of the time she spent associated with a stable synonymous for excellence in the Flyweight division. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome… Ms. Alyson Hannigan.”
The bright and bubbly redhead waved to the reporters as she entered the room, like Denise taking a moment to shake Mr. Duke’s hand and pose for photographs, before joining her new proteges on that end of the stage.
Mr. Duke again took to the microphone.
“Now, we do have time for just a couple of questions, so…”
He pointed to a reporter in the second row.
“This is question is for Aly Michalka,” the reporter began. “You mentioned perhaps going for the Lightweight belt. It’s been some time since you’ve fought at Lightweight. Is that something you’re seriously considering?”
“I’m keeping my options open,” the blonde replied. “I don’t see any reason why I couldn’t move up and do that. But we’ll see.”
Dennis recognized a woman up front.
“Yes, this is for Isabella,” the reporter said. “There’s already some rumblings that Becky G is looking to face you. Is that a fight you’d be up for?”
“Look, there isn’t a fight that I’m not up for,” Gomez responded. “And listen, I’ve got nothin’ but love for Miss Becky G. I’ve seen a few of her fights. She’s tough. She’s scrappy. Definitely the embodiment of the whole ‘how much fight in the dog’ thing. So there’s not gonna be anything personal about it when I knock her on her butt. Hopefully she’ll feel the same way.”
“Last question,” Mr. Duke said, before acknowledging a man in the fourth row.
“Ms. Cowan,” the reporter said, “it did not escape anyone’s notice who you called out last week. And apparently, it didn’t escape Kira’s as well. Have you gotten word of her remarks? And if so, do you have a response?”
Caylee offered the man a cruel smirk.
“Well, first off, it was kinda cute hearing my future b*tch call me a ‘pup’,” the blonde observed. “But then, it was kinda pathetic hearing her talk about destroying my heart in the wake of her recent performances. But I’ll admit, I’m actually fairly pleased she’s not too eager to step into the ring with me right now. Because after the beatings that Thorne, Olsen, and Weaving have put on her… even after pulling out that miracle against an overrated Dennings, she’d never be able to show her face again, after I make her face disappear. And I’m looking forward to owning her ass for YEARS to come…”
