"Yeah, I'm kind of surprised," says Love with a smile. "It's not that Stewart isn't a top level fly, because she IS. It's that she's stepping up to a bantam like me. That's not gonna go well for her."
"She might have a little weight on me when we get in there," says Kristen with a nod. "And, obviously, she's a champion. But, none of that is going to help her tonight."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back and ringside and that's 'Heart of Glass' you hear behind us, and here comes the singer of that cover version you're now hearing, the lovely Jennifer Love Hewitt!"
Cassie: "Hewitt, of course, IS a former bantamweight champion as Kris pointed out..."
McCarthy: "And, this makes eleven out of Kristen's last 13 fights that have been against current or former champions."
O'Dell: "Hewitt into the ring and helped off with the robe to reveal a scarlet number that's gotten the crowd's attention, and, that's 'Helter Skelter' by the Fab Four booming through the arena, and here comes 'The Five-Tool Player', Kristen Stewart!"
McCarthy: "Weirdo's only REAL fighter, present company INCLUDED."
Cassie: "I find it amusing that Mac keeps forgetting I have access to this arena 24/7/365...or, this year, 366. Any time I want, I can come here and do...things..."
McCarthy: "Don't you THREATEN ME you LITTLE..."
Tess: "SPEAKING of present company, Stewart has TWO top flyweights on her heels in the Front Street pecking order now that Cassie has joined Ariel Winter in the division. She definitely doesn't want to slip up tonight..."
O'Dell: "Kristen with her customary nod to Mac before climbing into the ring and being helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve. She's wearing that lime green number we've seen before and the ladies are about ready. Time for some picks. Tess likes Kristen. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Stewart!"
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "And, we're underway. Stewart immediately to that long left jab of hers, and she's getting it on target early, stopping the older woman with it, holding her in place for follow on right hands. Love trying to close. Wants to get inside and work some body, bring her power to bear..."
McCarthy: "But, she's not going to as long as K-Stew has that educated jab going."
O'Dell: "And, she's got it going right now. Kristen in rhythm quickly, getting the work she wants to get done done. Love can't close. She's able to land a quick counter here and there, but she's mostly being held at bay by Kristen's left hand and being strafed by those following rights."
Cassie: "Good stuff from K-Stew, no doubt."
O'Dell: "Final ten seconds of a pretty one-sided first. K-Stew's been in control the whole way. Hewitt game, but not able to get much done at the moment. Good combination by Stewart there, stops Hewitt in her tracks again and there's the bell. Not close. Stewart wins the round and takes the 10-9 lead."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Second begins with Love showing more foot movement, keeping the hands high, tucking the head, using every trick in the book to get past that jab. K-Stew getting it on some, and, when she does, when she's able to stop Hewitt, she can put punches together..."
Tess: "Love getting inside some now, though."
O'Dell: "She is. And, when she does, it's a different story. She's working body, crowding K-Stew, going upstairs, then back down, getting some hard leather on target. Jennifer not a kid anymore, but she's thicker now than she used to be and looks like having even more power."
Cassie: "Most definitely looks like it."
O'Dell: "Stewart tying up, getting a break, getting some space and going back to the jab. Love inside, banging to the ribs and midsection, landing a nice left hook. Fighters fall into another clinch and the ref breaks them apart at the bell. Close round, but it's Love this time."
McCarthy: "Even at 19."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Hewitt getting it going now as we start the third. She's finding ways through Kristen's defenses, getting more aggressive, backing Stewart up with heavy shot to both head and body. Love scoring with both hands, forcing the younger woman to the defensive now."
Tess: "And, this is the way to beat Stewart. Boxing with her isn't going to work. You've got to PRESSURE."
O'Dell: "And, Jennifer is THAT kind of fighter and she's working THAT kind of fight plan right now. She's crowding Stewart, staying after her, working some body, but mostly concentrating upstairs. This is vintage Hewitt right now, Mac. She's looking very good at the moment."
McCarthy: "K-Stew going to have to punch for respect in there. She's playing defense right now, and that's fine, but, sooner or later..."
O'Dell: "That's definitely a point. Kristen managing right now, not taking any undue chances, but, the time may come when she's going to have to bang with to slow some of this stuff down. Final seconds ticking away in what's been a one-sided third and there's the bell. Hewitt. Wide."
Cassie: "And Love has the lead 29-28."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Love pushing forward, keeping the gloves high and the head tucked, working past Kristen's defenses and getting inside to work some body. Stewart tying up, getting a break, circling away. Love again forward. Stewart using a drop step now to create more space..."
Tess: "Giving her an extra instant to get that jab on target..."
O'Dell: "Exactly, and it's she's using that extra spot of time well. Stopping Hewitt with the left hand and ROCKING HER WITH AN OVERHAND RIGHT! A BOOMING right hand from Stewart and LOVE is HURT! Jennifer wobbling, covering up and GETTING DROPPED WITH A STRAIGHT RIGHT HAND!"
McCarthy: "Not getting up from THAT!"
O'Dell: "J-Love flat on her back as Stewart heads to a neutral corner. Referee's count at three. Four. Five. Hewitt rolling to her belly. Six. Seven. Pushing to hands and knees. Eight. Nine. TEN! It's OVER! Love still on all fours as the count passes her by and it's OVER! And your winner by KO4 is 'The Five-Tool Player', Kristen Stewart!"
Cassie: "Best flyweight division in the FCBA. Right here at Front Street."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Cassie Scerbo!"
Cassie: "I have our winner, Kristen Stewart, and, K-Stew, she can hit, can't she?"
Kristen (nodding): "First, congrats on your win tonight!"
Cassie (smiling): "THANK you!'
Kristen: "And, to answer your question, yes. She's a bantam and she hits like one. Made things hard for me. And, that's OK. Because, eventually, I knew I'd get her. And I did."
Cassie: "I won't ask what's next for you because I know the answer..."
Kristen (smiling): "You do. Whatever gets me closer to a shot to get the belts back."
"Yeah, I'm kind of surprised," says Love with a smile. "It's not that Stewart isn't a top level fly, because she IS. It's that she's stepping up to a bantam like me. That's not gonna go well for her."
