Hollywood would host a big bout this evening as Ginger Rogers would box Barbara Stanwyck..
“I didn’t see this fight, of course,” says K.O. Kapowski, noted celebrity boxing historian, “but I was able to tape the recollections of old timers and I can see from the now found film that their memories were very accuate,:”)
This bout was held on a boxing ring studio set, one that was filming a boxing picture at this moment. (“Nice big ring with plenty of ringside seating and judging by the photography the camera set-up was good too.” Comments KO Kapowski.
The crowd was soon filled with celebrities and soon the combatants walked to the ring.
Ginger enters the ring and goes to her corner. She has her robe off to show dark blue trunks, light blue top with light blue gloves. Rogers wore the same color boots with dark blue laces.
(“I got those colors from the notes taken by my sources. Too bad this is just black and white,” sai KJO
Barbara was next and she came to the ring. She entered and went to her corner. Then she removed her robe.
Stanwyck wore a red top and black trunks for this bout. Her gloves were black as were her bots with red laces.
Says K.O. Kapowski: "It is my understanding that Ginger and Barbara started out in the Broadway chorus lines. Those chorus girls were fiercely competitive in all things including private Broadway Boxing matches. Those who knew the New York theatrical boxing scene were eager to see two veterans of that venue in action in Hollywood. Barbara was the better known to most of the crowd having starred in a number of movies. Ginger had just had a breakthrough hit with “GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933”. A lot of fans were eager to see what she could do against Stanwyck.”
Meeting them in the ring was the referee for the bout, Maureen O' Sullivan fresh from Tarzan the Ape Man. Maureen was in a white swimsuit with striped referee's shirt over it. Maureen was only 5'3 but she did not seem intimidated as she gave the ring instructions to Ginger and Barbara.
(“They tell me Maureen had some pretty good fights herself,” remarks KO Kapowski, “I sure hope some of them surface.”)
These out of the way, the fighters went to their corners and the bell rang....
Round 1 & 2:
The two boxers traded wide wins in the first two rounds. Ginger surprised some with a surprising wide win in the first round. No one was more surprised than Barbara who had to eat a few hard punches from Ginger’s blue gloves. Stanwyck did find herself backed to the ropes before she was able to uppercut into Rogers’ face and get off them. She did counter but it was not enough as Rogers took the first round widely.
Barbara came out better as the second round opened. She used her gloves to jab and cross at Ginger’s face to begin the round. Barbara then went to straight punches as she wanted to avoid Ginger’s legs and movements. Stanwyck was able to bounce and punch Ginger back to the far ropes. She tried to bottle up Rogers there with some nasty hooks to her belly. Barbara won the second round widely.
Round 3:
The third round saw a cautious opening from both boxers. It seemed the free swinging style had got both of them a bit arm weary. Ginger started to use her legs more as she went to jab or straight punch Barbara in her belly. Stanwyck had to move back after a couple exchanges hit her harder than she thought. She then went to jab and cross at Rogers’ face when she could. All in all a close round as Ginger won it.
Round 4:
The next round saw Barbara come out fast as the bell rang. Soon she was right in Rogers’ face with a couple hard hooks to her belly. Those shots surprised Ginger as she went to move her gloves to her middle. Stanwyck saw this and went to her face with a quick right uppercut. That moved Ginger back and she was dazed. Barbara followed and went back to her face with another right uppercut and left cross. Ginger’s head snapped and then swiveled to the side from those punches. Quickly now, Barbara snapped her head back with back to back uppercuts. She then went to right cross Rogers’ face. GINGER GOES DOWN! Maureen comes in and immediately moves Stanwyck to a neutral corner. Then O’Sullivan bends down and begins her count. After the count of 7 is reached, Ginger is still on her back. By 9 she is lifting her head.10 finds her with her head up but no other part of her body up. KO 4 – Barbara Stanwyck.
After: The clip then shows Barbara moving around the fallen Ginger and doing victory poses over the fallen Ginger. It seems evident that the veteran Barbara was trying to put the rookie in her place. You can catch a glimpse of Ginger’s scowling face as she realizes what’s going on.
(“Says KO Kapowski: ‘Yes, and it didn’t put Ginger in a better mood when the stills of those poses started going around or so my sources have told me. They also said Ginger was really disappointed at only going 4 rounds against Stanwyck, but those poses just rubbed it in. She was the type of fighter who, when she loses, works twice as hard and that’s just what she did. She also had the motivation to pay Stanwyck back for trying to humiliate her. She and Barbara had a lot more fights going forward. One would win and the other would want to answer it in another fight. It made for a lot of great fights even if neither ever achieved total domination.. Sure glad this fight was found. I think it was a classic and showed what fighters like Stanwyck an Rogers could do,”)
