Our reporter and his blonde companion sit watching football at Bazz with Beth Harnois, Cassandra Lynn Scerbo, Poindexter Del Crunchy, and the Man In The Hat.
Reporter: "Heck of a pay-per-view, huh?"
Beth (smiling): "It sure was for Mary..."
Man In The Hat (smiling): "Beth here told me to go bet a pile of money on Ms. Winstead to win that tourney..."
Tess: "DID you?"
Man In The Hat: "Absolutely NOT. Old Wiz only bets on sure things. And, in that kind of competition, NOBODY was a sure thing."
Beth (grinning): "But. I was RIGHT, wasn't I?"
Pointy: "Girl definitely had the toughest draw..."
Cassie: "No question, she earned those belts."
Reporter: "Speaking of belts...McKinney certainly gave Upton a run for her money."
Man In The Hat: "No question about it. And, there's no shame in losin' to a girl like Kate. She's definitely among the elite of the elite in that division...someplace we just can't seem to gain entry to."
Tess: "You've won some big fights up there."
Man In The Hat: "A few. But, it seems like there's a door we just can't break through, and, for the moment, we're gonna direct our efforts elsewhere."
Tess: "All while staying active in the divison, of course..."
Man In The Hat: "That is not even a question that needs asking. As you recall, earlier this year, we made a decision regarding the welters. We decided that we would either drop out of the division entirely and permanently OR we would make a commitment to stay in it permanently. That commitment was made both to the commissioner and, just as importantly, to several welterweight managers who'd asked us to remain active participants in the division. And, when I commit to doing something, I do it. Period."
Reporter: "But, for the moment..."
Man In The Hat: "For the moment, we are going to stop seeking the welterweight titles. We've had two shots this year with our two best welters and we've fallen short. We've now had FOUR shots up there with FOUR different girls and we're 0-4...we're becoming the Buffalo Bills around here. And, Front Street is NOT the Buffalo Bills."
Pointy: "I keep telling him that none of this is a big deal..."
Reporter: "But, Wiz thinks it is?"
Man In The Hat: "Do you know how many title shots it took us to win the lightweight gold? Three. On our third try, Katy won it. At bantam, it took ONE try. Britney won it, and in fact, in our first three shots, we won the title THREE TIMES, because Neve and Grace won our next two bantamweight title shots. It also took us ONE try to win the Ice Hotel with Swanny..."
Cassie: "And you've only got the one flyweight shot..."
Man In The Hat: "Correct."
Reporter: "But, I don't see why..."
Man In The Hat: "As I always tell you, resources are limited. You can't push everybody at the same time. It's like the TV business. For decades, American TV networks have been deciding on cancelling shows based on RELATIVE ratings. Ratings of shows RELATIVE to the other shows on that network. Know why?"
Tess: "Actually, I don't..."
Man In The Hat: "Most people don't and if you ain't in the industry, there's no reason you should. Here's the deal. You can't cancel EVERYTHING, because, if you do, that means you're premiering too many new shows..."
Reporter: "What's 'too many'?"
Man In The Hat: "Let me explain it this way. You only have so much promotional time and so much of a promotional budget. So, if you premiere too many shows, one of two things happens. You prioritize, giving SOME shows proper promotion and, basically, giving the others a death sentence, or, you spread your resources too thin, don't promote ANYTHING enough, and it all fails..."
Tess: "Bad choices."
Man In The Hat: "Exactly. So, what you do is figure out how many new hours of shows you can premiere the next year, and you cancel a corresponding group of shows. And, while there are other factors, especially today, the major one remains RELATIVE ratings."
Tess: "And, as YOU have limited resources as well..."
Man In The Hat (smiling): "Correct. We can't push everybody at the same time. So, we have to direct our efforts. Now. I look at our bantam division, and it's VERY strong. We have four girls there with championship ability. One, Chloe, has already won the title once. She could very well be the first Front Street fighter ever to win multiple titles. We need to put some effort in there. At lightweight, I have Katy and Gemma, who've both won the belts, and Swanny, who's won the Ice Hotel. All three have championship ability and we need to put some effort in there..."
Cassie: "And, Uncle Wiz has put a lot of effort into the flyweight division this year."
Man In The Hat: "That, we have. And, while we are not, at this moment, pushing for a flyweight title shot, we've managed to take a division that's been a major problem and turn it into a strength. But. We're not done building yet. Still plenty of work to do there."
Beth: "Still, you've got welters..."
Man In The Hat: "That, we do. And, again, don't expect that to change. For now, we can keep Katy busy working toward regaining the lightweight straps. I've thought about the Ice Hotel for Antje already, and I might pursue that with her. Maybe with Charlotte, too..."
Reporter: "But, not JMDD with Charlotte..."
Man In The Hat: "Not at this time, no. If we came to the conclusion that Ms. McKinney would be best served as a specialist in that realm, we'd have to either decide to get involved with that or make a move with her. But we haven't come to that conclusion. And, again, none of this is a permanent state of affairs. We're just going to take some time and do some other things. At some point in the future, I suspect we'll make another effort at welterweight. When that will be and with whom, I don't know."
Reporter: "One more question. Aren't you SIGNING a welter?"
Man In The Hat: "Did I SAY that? I said we were signing a BIG, because our flyweight and bantamweight divisions are full. Might be a welter. Might be a light. Might be a girl, like Katy, who can fight both..."
Reporter: "But, you KNOW who it is..."
Man In The Hat: "I didn't say THAT, either. Now. Let's watch some ball."
Reporter: "Heck of a pay-per-view, huh?"
