TESS VALMORE
The highlight of the October PPV was the conclusion of the lightweight tournament. I was critical of the way the participants were selected by stable rather than ranking. There were fighters, who should not have been there that were, and there were fighters, who should have been there that weren’t. At the end, however, the results were what could have been expected if just ranked fighters were selected. Going into the tournament the two favorites were Lima and Jenner. Lima was eliminated in the quarter finals by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Jenner made it to the finals, but lost the title to none other than Mary Elizabeth Winstead. I am a big fan of Mary Elizabeth and am happy that the won, but I certainly didn’t expect it. In fact, I predicted a Jenner win. This is Winstead’s second unified title. She also has one divisional title. The tournament results will cause a shakeup on the lightweight rankings plus the outcome of the Sagra, Tailor and Gibbs bouts will have some effect.
There will be changes in the welter rankings after Lawrence’s upset of Rhoda and Prinsloo’s win over Kloss. Kostek will get a look, but probably will be on the cusp Righetti’s win over Hill and Upton’s win over McKinney were virtual certainties, as was Freeman’s win over Geha. That was a bout that should have never been scheduled. It was a pretty much of a joke and a gimme.
In the bantams, Lilly’s win over Danes should get her a title shot with Dobrev. Lilly is now 5-2 for the year. She now has a Hall Of Fame win ratio, but she need fights. At her current rate, it will take her three years to get those fights and that assumes she keeps her winning ratio, which right now is just over the minimum. There should be a shakeup in the bantam rankings with Kosarin’s win over Ratajkowski, who was over ranked to begin with. Lilly should replace Danes near the top. Lopilato’s win over Evigan was big, but probably won’t get her into the top ten, but maybe into the top twenty. Scodelario should remain close to the top
For the first time in a long time, the flyweight bouts were at a minimum. Williams defended her title successfully, which was expected. The upset of the night did occur in the flyweights, when Rose beat Panettiere. The loss once again, prevented Hayden from gaining entry into the Hall Of Fame. She has the credentials, however can’t enter on a loss. It’s a little alarming that his was her fourth straight loss this year. Cyrus should maintain her current position at eleven with her win over Mendes
Note: My comments on the flyweight and bantam rankings are presumptuous as they are done by my betrothed. We don’t see eye to eye about what to consider in rankings, but he does flyweight and bantam rankings and I don’t. so his opinion counts
