Our reporter sits in The Great Room at The Manor watching baseball and sipping cold beverages with Poindexter Del Crunchy and the Man In The Hat.
Reporter: "So. Wiz. When were you planning on telling me you had a TITLE SHOT on the next pay-per-view? We talked about Stewart/Watson Sunday, but not a peep about McKinney/Upton!"
Man In The Hat (laughing): "Well, son. Negotiations were still going on at the time. We didn't HAVE a fight to announce. Thus, we didn't announce it. But, now that it's official, I'll be happy to comment."
Reporter: "OK. Let's start with you saying you weren't pushing for another title shot this year..."
Man In The Hat: "And, we're not. As I said, we're working on some things in the stable right now, and the plan WAS and IS to continue working on those, continue positioning ourselves for a big 2019. But. We weren't going to turn down a shot at the welterweight gold. It wouldn't have been fair to Charlotte, who, after all, came here to GET shots like that, and it wouldn't have been fair to Upton, the reigning champ, to walk away from her challenge."
Pointy: "NOT that you might NOT walk away from a title shot..."
Man In The Hat: "Well, we're not going to be fighting for the JMD or JMDD titles, of course. And, we HAVE turned down a title fight in the past...but, those were special circumstances. In the vast majority of cases, title opportunities being as rare as they are, you want to accept when you get them. After all, we've been in existence since February of 2010, 105 months, counting this month. We've had 20 title shots to this point. Do the math. A couple-three a year. That's what you get. And, that's for a big, established stable that competes in all four weights like ours. So. Again. You don't want to walk away from them."
Reporter: "You might have inadvertently walked away from one by having Winter sit out October, if I can read between the lines in Hawkeye's comments..."
Man In The Hat: "Winter is 20 years old. On the morning of last New Year's Eve, she'd had 10 fights in her career. In the nine months since that day, she's had EIGHT. And four of the last five have been Song, Kreuk, Lowndes, and Portman. The kid needs a break, and she's going to get one. And, there's a possibility it's going to be a little stretch, too. I've got the girls I want on the last three Asylums of the year chosen, and Ariel isn't on any of them. Now. She might get a challenge we'll accept before the end of the year, but, if not, I'm OK with her resting until January. We like to get our girls their six fights a year, and she's already had seven. If there's an eighth? OK, if it works. But. If not, I'm fine with it."
Pointy: "Smart man. Girl like that has a huge potential future. No sense rushing anything."
Reporter: "Speaking of Asylum, is the announcement this week?"
Man In The Hat: "Thursday."
Reporter (smiling): "When will we hear about Torv's replacement, who Tess says won't be as talented as Decker?"
Man In The Hat: "When I have something to announce. But. Let me give you a teaser. She's MORE talented than Decker. Now. Let's watch some ball."
