Chloe Bennet vs. Margot Robbie (Bantamweight Championship)
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)
BEFORE:
Two of the FCBA's best bantams meet with the gold on the line. And, while Robbie can't match Bennet's four previous title fights, she does have some experience fighting for the gold, having failed to wrest them from Danielle Fishel back in 2015. A second opportunity has been a long time coming for the gorgeous blonde, and she has no intention of letting this one slip away. "I probably wasn't ready the last time," says Margot with a nod. "Fishel, she'd been in so many fights for titles, and here I was in my first, and that didn't help me. But, now, I've been there before. And, this time, I'm walking out with the belts."
"Well," says Chloe with a little smile. "I don't have the kind of experience Fishel does. But, then again, I DID win MY first title fight. And, I'm going to win THIS one, too."
ROUND ONE:
No feeling out at all. Robbie aggressive early, coming forward, getting after Bennet, backing her up with a ton of heavy shot. Chloe wants to slow things down, but it's not going to happen. Blonde's pushing the pace, looking to jump on her rival early, and she's getting that done. Bennet uncomfortable, cant seem to get anything going or keep Robbie off. Instead, the blonde calls the tune, scores the points, and lands the solid shot. Late in the round, Bennet seems to adjust, and begins banging back with some hard shot, but that doesn't slow down Margot, who keeps firing away, eventually getting the brunette backed to the ropes and letting her have it for a final twenty seconds that are as one-sided as you can imagine. At the bell, Robbie's not only won the round and done so wide, she's made a statement that's much more valuable than the 10-9 lead she's built.
ROUND TWO:
We all know the drill. Bennet gets behind early in fights and comes back late. But, the brunette's a little tired of that kind of thing. And, if Margot thinks she's going to put the champion in a hole, well. BOOM! The blonde, continuing to force the pace, comes forward again early and this time she gets SMACKED with a hard right hand that unhinges her knees! Robbie manages to keep her feet, but, that's all she manages to do. The brunette lets the hands go, and, that quickly, the roles have been reversed. Bennet drives Robbie back into the ropes and lets her have it with both hands. The blonde's covering up along the ropes, absorbing a ton of punishment as the referee looks in, ready to pounce if necessary. Margot, though, does enough to prevent that. She fires back in spots, rolls with punches, avoids the big shot that would finish it. At the bell, though, Bennet's grabbed it wide and evened the fight at 19.
ROUND THREE:
Chloe in control. She's off the stool and after Margot, sitting down on punches, backing up a still-woozy Robbie and letting her have it with both barrels. The Aussie's in serious trouble, as the brunette's finding the range with the heavy artillery. It's looking like a matter of time as Bennet works Robbie back into the ropes and begins working the body, then back up to the head. Margot tying up, hanging on, doing anything she can to slow Bennet down, but nothing really works. Chloe's ripping punches at the challenger, punishing her, but, unable to finish her. Referee again looking in, but, again kept at bay by good defensive work and just enough offense from the blonde. Down the stretch, Margot begins to firm up a little. Chloe's still dominating, but Robbie's able to get something on her rejoinders at least. And, at the bell, the Aussie's still standing, but Chloe's pitched the shutout and leads 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Robbie continues to firm up, and Bennet doesn't press the issue. Instead, she begins to box the blonde at range. Margot answers in kind, and the result is some pretty, two-way boxing. Both girls have shown in the past that they can do this, and, if anyone's forgotten, well, it's on full view now. Both ladies moving heads, hands, feet, shoulders, setting up right hands with lefts, putting punches together. And, as good as the offense is, the defense is actually better. Plenty of punches slipped or blocked despite the solid efforts made at setting them up. For two and a half minutes, there's nothing in it. But, then Bennet turns it on late. She turns up the aggression and throws Margot to the defensive. Robbie doesn't stay there long, eventually countering and getting back to even terms by the bell, but, it's enough for Chloe to grab the round and stretch her lead to 39-37.
ROUND FIVE:
Bennet comfortable working from ahead. She's right back to range, boxing with. Margot's got the reach, though, and she begins to use that to effect. The blonde adds a bit of a drop step to her motion, creating just a bit more distance, forcing Chloe to step to to close it. And, she uses that brief flick of time to land the jab, take another drop step, create the range again. It's plenty effective and allows the Aussie to begin getting the better of things. For two minutes, Robbie calls the tune. Eventually, though, the champion adjusts, figures the geometry, and is able to get to the spots she wants to get off in combination. Result is a busy last minute, with both fighters landing punches in bunches. Nobody's hurt, but everybody's getting touched despite more good defense. At the bell, it's close again, but, this time it's Margot, who cuts the lead to 48-47 at the half.
ROUND SIX:
Robbie back to the long jab and the drop step. Bennet's angling now, getting to where she needs to be to get her own offense going. Step. Into. My. Parlor. Robbie's laying a bit of a trap here, though not an obvious one. And, when it springs, Bennet's not the only one surprised. Chloe angles forward, and Margot's able to fit her for a NASTY right hand and BENNET'S HURT! Out of nowhere, the brunette's in trouble and the blonde, having walked her into it beautifully, goes OFF. Robbie's throwing punches from everywhere, battering Bennet into the ropes and then emptying the magazines in an effort to get her out of there. All the frustrations of the title fight against Fishel being let out now, as the beautiful blonde REEFS hard leather at the brunette, determined to finish this thing right now. Doesn't happen. Bennet holds on and holds off the referee. At the bell, it's a shutout, Margot, and we're even at 57, but Bennet's still standing.
ROUND SEVEN:
Robbie continues to press the issue. She's walking forward behind the jab, taking advantage of Chloe's iffy legs to walk the brunette down. Bennet firing back in spots, slowing Margot, not stopping her, but slowing her and THEN ROCKING HER! Bennet sets the feet and lands a right hand counter that unhinges the blonde's knees. Margot begins to fall forward and grabs Bennet to keep herself on her feet! Chloe shoves off and lets the hands go, sending Margot reeling into the ropes to her right. Referee looking ready to leap in as Bennet begins firing off the big guns. Robbie in a tight earmuff, rolling with punches, jabbing back, desperately hanging on, just as her opponent was in the previous round. And, just like Chloe did in the sixth, Margot manages to survive the seventh. At the bell, she's scuffed and wobbly, but still standing. It's Chloe wide, though, and Bennet now leads 67-66.
ROUND EIGHT:
Bennet after the Aussie from the opening seconds. She's forward behind the left, all about dropping hard rights onto the decks of the S.S. Robbie, looking to land the shell that will send it to the bottom. But, again, the challenger's taking the shell and staying afloat. she's on the defensive, on the back foot, but able to counter in spots and run some clock as she waits for the legs to recover from the previous round. BOOM! A BIG right hand from Chloe and DOWN GOES MARGOT! Set up by a jab, the right cross detonates on the blonde's chin and sends her crashing on her back to the canvas. She actually bounces once before settling, starfished, OUT. Bennet's quickly to a neutral corner and the referee begins to count, but this is a formality. Robbie not moving at all, just lying, eyes closed, as the numbers mount and the count passes her by. It's OVER! And your winner by KO8 and STILL Unified Bantamweight Champion is Chloe Bennet!
AFTER:
Bennet takes a minute post-fight to go check on Margot, who's being brought around in stages, and is plenty complimentary in the post-fight. "I knew she was good coming in, obviously," says Chloe. "But, she's better than I thought. She's quick. She's athletic. She's a great boxer. And, she can hit. She's going to wear these belts someday. No doubt about it."
