Bonzo’s Gym: Roster Changes, February 2018
The unfortunate moment has come for us to announce further roster changes after the earlier retirement of former champion Nadia Bjorlin. Our aim is to have a lean, successful roster: if we cannot get our girls fights, we’re no longer the right place for them.
Two girls will leave our stable, one girl will be signed as a prospect.
1. Bantamweight
The generational change we had hoped to establish with the introduction of Kira Kosarin has been executed earlier than we expected. That means the sad moment has come where it’s time to announce
retirement from our stable. Evangeline has been with us since October 2004. For years, she’s been our trademark fighter and our only title contender. From 2006 to 2010, she’s held the bantam title five times, and been a champion in five consecutive years. Her tragic rivalry with lightweight-in-disguise Missy Peregrym was legendary. Like Amanda Righetti, her greatest achievement was a tournament win, winning four consecutive battles to be crowned champion of the division in 2009. She went 8 – 1 in 2007 and 9 – 2 in 2009. She’s 43 – 27 now. Since 2010, Evangeline’s had rougher years: she’s won her last title in 2016 and lost another title bout in 2014. Her 2016 reign will be her last at Bonzo’s. Against recent, younger competition (Scodelario, VanCamp, Bellisario), she’s come up short. She’s still ranked #3 in the world in BWO’s rankings, but we feel her journey at Bonzo’s has run its course. The Hall of Fame is a long distance away. We know we are retiring Evangeline at a point where she still has the ability to become champion again, but we haven’t been able to get her the number of fights she needs. Evangeline has asked us to announce that while her retirement from Bonzo’s will be permanent, she still has not decided whether to hang up the gloves for good. That means she’ll be a free agent at this point and is available for other stables to pick her up, or other fighters to fight her as a free agent.
BUT: Evangeline will still fight for us one last time. It’s that fight you’ve been excited to see unfold since we signed a new fighter to bantamweight. So, yes, her last fight will be against Kira Kosarin, at a soon-to-be-announced date. As we have said, the decision has been made, so this won’t be an ultimatum fight for Evangeline, but it’s her wish to end her career at our stable against one of our biggest hopes for the future. It’s a dangerous fight for Kira. It’s a dangerous farewell fight for Evangeline. We hope it will live up to the expectations.
2. Welterweight
a) She’s never reached the pinnacles Evangeline’s reached, but she’s been a staple of our welterweight roster since 2008 nevertheless. Still, at 41, the time has also come to announce the retirement of
Milena’s been an underdog in many of her fights. She beat Charlize Theron in 2012 to win one of the most unexpected welterweight titles in a generation. But her tragic losing streak of six fights across 2013 to 2016 (Decker, Upton, Kajlich, Nolin, Regan, Atkinson) has proved that there’s always been a ceiling for her and at 41 she’s not going to break that ceiling any more. She broke the streak and ends her career for us on a more upbeat note, with wins over Krsmanovic and Bloodgood and a loss to Jeri Ryan. As with Evangeline, Milena will be available for interested parties as a free agent fighter.
b) 2017 has been the year of the (swimsuit) supermodel at the welterweight division. Kate Upton, Hannah Ferguson, Hilary Rhoda and others have taken the division by storm and continue to amaze their legions of fans. We’ve been skeptical of their run early on, but we cannot ignore it. We still think Amanda Righetti will be back to dominate them. But at the same time we’ve also come to decide that, maybe, we need one of those models at our gym, too, right? After a while of searching, we’ve found someone to sign on a prospective basis. She won’t be winning accolades by Tractorpull for her level of (deserved?) celebrity, but we’re willing to accept that. Her supermodel looks combined with a fitness model’s athleticism have us intrigued. We’ll see whether she gets a permanent contract. No words yet on her debut fight, but we’re open to any suggestions and/or challenges from this point on.
She’s been featured in this year’s swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated, and we’ve chosen a selection of her best pictures to introduce you to
Camille is 25 years old, stands at 5 feet and 8 inches, weights in at around 140 pounds and will be an addition to our welterweight roster. Camille will in general be available for JMD fights, though it won’t be her focus.
3. That way, Bonzo’s Gym’s Current Roster will looks like this:
