Results: Lookout Writing: Archer
Serinda: 33 YO, 5’7 (1.70 m), 36-14-0, 28 KO since 2009, Front Street Stable
Mary: 32 YO, 5’8 (1.73 m) 40-37-0, 34 KO since 2007, Foxfire Boxing
Before: “I realize that I have a reputation for ‘gimmick fights’,” acknowledged Mary Winstead in the pre-fight press conference, “but you will all just have to wait for my next ‘Santa-Kini’ fight to see something like that with him. No, I am in this fight because I am serious about wanting a Lightweight Title shot. I realize I won’t likely get another with Adriana Lima, but I’ve been around long enough to know some day she’ll lose and there will be a new champion. I want to be in position for that day. Serinda is a highly ranked contender and beating her would help my plan. It doesn’t hurt that I have been Serinda in 2009 and 2012, but I am sure she’s more than eager to do something about that record. I am looking forward to this.”
Serinda Swan nods in agreement when it is her time at the podium: “I am glad Mary thinks she can work her way up the Lightweight ladder through me. It gives me the chance I have been wanting for 5 years which is start evening up our mutual record. There is no way she beat me three straight times even if it has been five years since the last one. I am much better fighter and I am going to be the won winning this fight. And if I should get a boost to my own title chances from it—so much the better. I am looking forward to this even more than Mary.”
Coming to the ring, Mary is in a blue-gray bikini with matching gloves and boots. Her bobbed hair is hanging loose, but wetted down. Serinda is in a silver bikini with silver gloves and boots (white laces). striking pixie-cut platinum hair. Both fighters get down to business and thering instructions are smoothly done and after a quick swipe of the gloves, Mary and Serinda are in their corners. The bell rings.
R1: Serinda and Mary move out to center ring and making probing attacks as they circle each other warily. Then Mary moves forward with quick strikes at Swans head to get her ducking and then digs hooks into her belly to make her legs quiver, However Serinda quick to counter with some answering right and left shots to the head. Mary now ducking and moving, but Serinda going to Mary’s midsection with some meaty hooks of her own. Mary hunching up and jabbing back, but Serinda taking them to land counters on Mary’s head. Circling again. Then they plunge forward with body banging on their minds in close and sweaty. Uppercuts catching the underside of bikini tops while hooks ravage belly meat. They are grinding this out right down to the bell and referee has to drag them apart. It’s a close one, but judges decide Serinda gets a narrow win.
R2: Mary striking from a distance as this round gets going. Serinda seems intent on getting in close, but Mary’s not buying. The closest Winnie wants to get is mid-range and she is landing some very accurate leather against Swan’s head and body. Serinda keeps trying to force her way in and getting banged up pretty heavily in the attempt. Swan finally giving up on the direct approach now tries to match Winnie in circle-and-punch, but Mary’s just not that easy to land on this round. Frustrated, Serinda, makes another charge, but is driven back with a bloody nose and gash to the forehead from Mary’s well-aimed punching. Round ends and Mary gets this stanza on her side of the card by a wide margin.
R3: Serinda still not convinced she can’t get close to Mary and this time she opens the round with some fancy footwork. Sure enough, she gets Winnie off balance and in comes Serinda hammering Mary hard to the jaw and ribs. Mary seems to be struggling to keep Swan back and Serinda now is pounding Mary’s belly over and over. Mary falls back rapidly and uses her jab to try to hold Serinda off. She has some success in slowing Serinda’s attack, but Serinda then working to cut off ring and herd Mary into the ropes. Mary fighting hard to avoid this and takes a shot that bloodies her nose, Mary finally clinching at the bell as Serinda adds a few more looks to Mary’s aching belly. Serinda Swan wins this round wide.
R4: Serinda goes right back at Mary and Mary continues to try to avoid a close-in battle. Interesting battle of footwork as the two bob, weave and circle around the ring amid flurries of punches, rushes and answering counters. Quite exciting to watch and the crowd is happy to cheer them on, but then Serinda lands a solid left-right combo to Winnie’s jaw. Winnie lurching backwards, jabbing more on instinct than clear direction as she tries to hold Serinda off. Serinda working her way around a wobbly Mary and using punches to drive Mary into the ropes. Mary thrown into the ropes and tries to cover up as she takes a seat on the ropes. Serinda able get at least four or give good hooks into Mary’s breasts and belly before Mary turns into the ropes and lets her right side take the punching. Serinda has a nice workout using Mary’s right ribs as a heavy bag., but she can’t get her down. After the bell,. Mary looking shellshocked, but makes an effort to walk calmly to her corner, but the wobble in her butt is telling. Serinda looking pleased as she wins another round by a wide margin.
R5: Mary worked on by the Foxfire corner crew as Rachel Nichols offers advice. Bell rings and Mary is out and ready as Serinda comes right at her. However this time, Mary moves the fight in close and she clearly surprises Serinda with a rapid-fire series of belly hooks and then nasty uppercuts into the breasts. Serinda looks jolted and Mary adds to her distress with quick overhand rights and lefts to the jaw. Serinda rocked and falls back in disorder. Mary moving with her to keep up the pressure. She is keeping Serinda confused as she strikes head and body in a random pattern. Serinda finally gets her jab going late and forces Mary back when she lands a sh*t to the nose causing blood trickle out once again. Mary grows more cautious as the round winds down, but Serinda too battered to take advantage. Swan happy just to be standing as the bell sounds. Mary wins the round win.
R6: Serinda clearly making an effort to get her aching body moving as the new round starts. Mary right back at her, now emboldened to fight in close and pump leather into Serinda Swan. Serinda quickly in trouble as she can’t keep Mary back. Mary goes all-out as she senses Swan is crumbling before her. She smashes her again and again to the jaw. SERINDA GOES DOWN! Serinda crumbles forward against Mary, who jumps back and watches as Serinda falls to her knees for a moment, then topples forward onto her face. Mary goes promptly to the neutral corner. Serinda is twitching and moaning, but she’s not really able to get up. Referee;’s count is a formality. He reaches “TEN!” and it’s OVER!
THE WINNER: MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD DEFEATS SERINDA SWAN KO6!
After: Mary smiling and gracious in victory. Accepts hugs from Sophie Turner and Candice Swanepoel. Rachel Nichols gives her a “Good job!” pat on the back. Mary strolls over to the Front Street corner to check on Serinda. Serinda’s awake but plainly distressed at losing to MEW for the third time. Mary careful not to make poor Serinda feel worse just offers a polite: “Good fight!” and withdraws.
It was indeed a good fight while it lasted. Seemed to go back and forth with Serinda seemingly gaining the upper hand in R3 and R4. However once Mary was able to beat Swan at her own in-close pressure fighting game, the fight went Winnie’s way and she ultimately won. Fight should ensure the improvement of Mary’s Lightweight position, but the question remains as to when she’s get her prized title shot when Adriana Lima is clearly fighting at the peak of her game. As for Serinda, it looks like regrouping is in order, but she’s clearly a worthy contender and she should be in the thick of things in 2018.
