(The Bondi Babes vs Free Agent)
Intro:
New York City's famous Madison Square Garden sees an exhibition fight for the ages as boxing's Lauryn Eagle takes on MMA superstar Ronda Rousey in the boxing ring.
With Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor about to fight in their own super fight, the ladies decided they should have their own.
Thr 29 year old Australian Lauryn Eagle is 5'9 comes into this fight in the pro boxing game with a record of 17 wins, 9 by knockout, 4 defeats and 1 draw, she also won an exhibition last year against wrestler Taryn Terrell by knockout.
She is currently the Australian Super featherweight champion, a former WBO super featherweight champion and a former Australian lightweight champion.
Her opponent is the 30 year old American Ronda Rousey, she stands 5'6 and comes into this fight with an MMA record of 12 wins, 3 by knockout, 9 by submission and 2 losses, both famously by knockout, boxing wise, she's done 6 exhibition's with other UFC stars and wrestlers, her record in those being 5 wins, all by knockout and 1 loss.
She is a former Strikeforce bantamweight champion, a former UFC bantamweight chamoion, she also has several medals from her days in Judo, including an Olympic bronze.
At the press conference, the stare down when these two goddess like blondes met was intense, hands on hips; they stared holes through their opponent, before surprising some in the crowd by shaking hands and giving each other a quick hug, then they went and sat at their tables to speak to the press.
Lauryn spoke first, saying "it is an honour to be doing this with Ronda, I've said in interviews before how much of an inspiration she has been for my own career, so I'm not going to be that type of person shouting how much I hate her, bad mouthing her character"
She adds "but we are both fighters, when that bell rings it will be too alpha fighters scrapping for you guys, even if this is an exhibition, I know the world of boxing and MMA will be watching us closely, so I plan on being the top dog in the ring at the night of the night, hopefully we do well for charity of course" smiling as she remembers part of the reason this fight is taking place.
As Lauryn has been speaking, Ronda has been sitting looking stoic, just listening to what her future opponent has to say.
Ronda finally speaks as she answers a few questions on peoples minds "firstly I'm in prime fighting shape physically and mentally, I know people think I'm finished as a fighter because of my two losses to Holm and Nunes, I don't know what my MMA future is yet but this fight with Lauryn has my full attention"
Then she adds "secondly I hear people saying this fight is my way of getting at Floyd Mayweather, what a load of crap, he can fight who he wants, the fact it's an MMA fighter has no baring on why I want to fight a boxer, I've been thinking of a boxing career for awhile, though again this is an exhibition fight, I won't have a pro record off this fight"
Changing the subject, she says "but enough of that, I want to speak about Lauryn, she calls me her idol, but I have to admit that I have a lot of respect for her, people claimed because she was a model that she couldn't be a fighter, the titles she has won speak otherwise, she looks, acts and is as big a badass fighter as I've ever met, so this should be a fun scrap I plan on winning"
The fighters are brought face to face, the girls themselves going nose to nose with a staredown that seems to stop time around them, everyone in the rooms eyes fixed totally on these two.
Before they separate with a smile and head off stage, journalists already hyped for this super fight!
Fight night, the legendary arena is sold out, Mauro Ranallo and Todd Grisham on commentary tonight to add a bit of UFC and boxing flavour to the booth.
Out comes Lauryn first, she has her coach by her side as a loud cheer rings out for the Aussie stunner, she's wearing a white sports bra with gold trim, white shorts, white boots and pink gloves tonight for the charity, all Lonsdale gear and her hair is braided.
She enters the ring and steps to the ring centre with her arms raised as her fans stand and cheer her, she has her game face on though as she heads to her corner, knowing as she goes through her final warm up.
Everyone's focus turns back to the ramp, where Ronda has emerged with her boxing coach faithfully by her side, she's wearing her famous Reebok black sports bra, tight black shorts she normally wears to the octagon, only difference is she has black shoes and pink boxing gloves on, her hair is in a simple ponytail as she usually has it.
As she walks to the ring, their is a loud duel chanting going on, Ronda and Lauryn's fans fighting to be heard as this fight transcends normal fights for these two.
Maybe it is beginning to play on both fights faces, but it doesn't show as they loom stone faced, Ronda entering the ring and doing a lap around the inside of the ring with her fists pumping in the air, as if she were in the cage, before she gets to her corner to warm up.
Brought to the ring centre by the referee, the noise in the arena somehow goes up another level as these two titans of their sports go nose to nose as the referee goes through his instructions.
Asked to touch gloves, both fighters nod at each other and respectfully touch them up, before jogging back to their corners.
Both look ready to go as they bounce on their toes, the referee signals to the timekeeper to start 10 rounds of lightweight exhibition action.
Round 1:
Out come the fighters, both light on their feet for girls their size, testing each others defences as they dance around each other.
Lauryn starts off the better, her extra 3 inches in height allowing her to jab away at Ronda and stay out of her range.
Ronda moving her head, clearly learning from her last two fights in the cage as she looks more mobile this time around, though that doesn't stop the almost sniper like jabs from Lauryn nicking her cheeks as she tries to move out the way.
Soon Ronda goes on the offensive, parrying a jab and stepping to the inside, Lauryn almost let's herself grin as she meets her opponent in close.
Both fighters lighting each other up with hard shots, letting their hands go as they brawl, Lauryn tries to hide her surprise, but the pained look on her face shows the power Ronda has in her punches.
Lauryn steps back and slams two straight punches between the gloves of Ronda straight to her nose, then adds a right hook to the body as she looks to get serious.
Pushing Ronda back around the ring as the UFC fighter covers up, Lauryn's fans starting to sound the more vocal as their fighter works the body of her opponent with thudding shots.
Ronda though finds an opening, landing a straight of her own up the centre, she adds a left hook to back Lauryn up a step.
Though the boxing champ sticks another jab to the nose of Ronda as she tries to come on the attack, leading to the fighters separating for a moment to take stock.
Back comes Ronda though, knowing she has to pressure Lauryn into a mistake if she has any chance of winning this.
As the seconds tick away, Lauryn shows her impressive footwork to move around Ronda and slams her long range punches around her guard to finish strongly.
The round ends with both girls nodding at each other, Ronda doing a lot better then the boxing pundits thought she would, Lauryn though setting a strong start for Ronda to follow.
Round 2:
Lauryn starts of sharp again with her jab to set up her bigger shots with her right, Ronda smartly tightening her guard; but it's leading to her being pressed back.
Smartly Ronda ducks under a right from Lauryn and quickly steps in to dig three punches to her abs before Lauryn lands a left cross to stop her charge.
Lauryn stepping forwards with a double jab that slams onto Ronda's guard, but her right and left to the body hit to force a groan from Rowdy Ronda.
A right hook from Ronda just misses but it gives her another chance to get on the front foot as she digs a left to the abs of Lauryn and smacks a right cross up onto the cheek of the Aussie.
Who covers up as Ronda presses her back, now Ronda's fans are getting more vocal, the swing in the action is being shown by the crowd noise in this arena.
Ronda tries to dig several uppercuts through the guard of Lauryn, but the pro boxer steps back and moves out the way of Rousey's attack.
Lauryn manages to land a left cross to turn her opponent's head around, but Ronda slips under the follow up right and lands an overhand right of her own to the left eye.
Blinking with that left as she throws her jab more defensively then before, Lauryn definitely got hurt by that last punch as Ronda keeps coming forwards.
Banging away to the body of Lauren, hoping to bring that guard down so she can work that left eye, but she gets caught with a straight on top of her head and a left to her cheek to slow her assault down.
Not long left in the round, Lauryn forced to square up to Ronda, try to knock her back, it leads to another hard exchange, both fighters wincing when they get caught with a clean shot.
The bell rings as Ronda lands a hard right hook that turned Lauryn's head, Lauryn nodding as she heads back to her corner, knowing she's in for one hell of a fight.
Mauro and Todd arguing at the commentary table which fighter is having the better of the action, Mauro arguing that Lauryn has controlled most of the action, Todd arguing that Ronda looks to have hurt Lauryn several times.
Round 3:
Out come the fights with Lauryn tightening her game, up more on her toes as she moves around Ronda, the American trying to stalk her around the ring, but getting caught around her guard.
The boxer is starting to show off her skills as she bobs her head out the way of Ronda's attempts and counters her with straight punches to her nose.
Some blood starts to trickle from Ronda's nose as she starts to look pissed off, she wisely backs off though as she knows she's wasting energy with each punch she misses with.
Lauryn coming forwards, pinning Ronda behind her guard with her jab, then landing a left and right to her cheeks, stepping out the way of a counter right hook.
"Eagle! Eagle!" Is being chanted as Lauryn takes control of the fight, the Ronda fans starting to quiet down as the worry that she is going to be visiting knocked out city if this keeps up.
But she shows she's far from done, letting Lauryn get close before stepping forwards to dig her left to the body and a right cross.
She tries to drive Lauryn back, but Ronda gets caught with a left cross and just moves out the way of an uppercut that had real venom behind it.
Lauryn continues to power Ronda back towards the ropes as the MMA star is struggling to get out of her shell, as her back hits the ropes though, it seems to wake Rousey up to her situation and she starts firing back.
It leads to another brutal exchange, one that Ronda doesn't do as well in as she is in a disadvantageous position to fight from.
Ronda is forced to clinch, with both fighters sneaking shots to the others kidneys, till the referee separates them and warns them to keep it clean, which both fighters nod to agree.
Lauryn tries to keep her momentum going as Ronda moves away from the ropes, with seconds ticking away till the end of the round, she smells blood in the water.
But she leaves her guard too low and as she tries to land a left hook, Ronda ducks and lands an overhand right that turns her head and forces her back several steps.
Ronda coming on the attack as Lauryn stands her ground, both just slugging it out till the bell rings, both giving the other a hard glare as their competitive nature is over taking them.
As they sit on their stools, both have reddening cheeks, Ronda's nose is bleeding and Lauryn's left eye is starting to swell, the crowd is going wild as they chant both girls names.
Round 4:
Lauryn comes out looking to keep the pressure on Ronda, she's throwing long range shots that are banging off the guard of the Rowdy one.
But as she tries to step in to land a right hook, Ronda ducks under it and comes back with a hard right hook of her own that catches Lauryn flush on her cheek.
Lauryn wobbles and another right hook catches her and Mauro sums it up best as he stands and shouts "goodnight Irene!" Lauryn hits the canvas with a thud as she's knocked out cold!
Winner: Ronda Rousey KO Round 4
After:
As the referee waves the fight off due to Lauryn being knocked out, Ronda roars to the heavens, she rushes to the nearest corner and climbs up to the middle rope with her fists in the air.
The crowd are going nuts like the two commentators ringside, Todd shouts "is this the biggest upset in all of boxing history?!" Mauro replies "there have been many that will go down in history, while this was an exhibition, it was hard fought as you'd expect, so you cannot take this away from Ronda and her fans!"
The ringside doctor needs several moments, the joy of Ronda's victory slowly becomes worry for Lauryn, even Ronda after calming down looks worried.
But Lauryn is awake and sitting up to the relief of everyone in the arena, Ronda quickly over to kneel next to Lauryn, who smiles and tells Ronda "congratulations babe, God my jaw is going to be killing me for a month"
Ronda surprisingly to some hugs Lauryn, people remembering this is supposed to be for charity, no titles or a feud to be settled here.
But there was a lot of pride on the line, while Lauryn won't admit it, it hurts badly that she was representing boxing and she lost to an MMA fighter, maybe Conor McGregor does have a punchers chance some say at ringside.
As Lauryn looks at Ronda after they finish hugging, she knows deep down that Ronda is something different, she conquered judo, she conquered MMA for a time, when she is dedicated Ronda is unstoppable, it's why Lauryn looks up to her as a person.
With help from Lauryn's coach, the pro boxer is helped up to stand, though she wobbles slightly at first, Lauryn seems to be recovering.
Both girls get their gloves taken off as the final announcement is being read out, Todd Grisham enters the ring looking for a word from both girls.
First he goes to Lauryn, who musters up a smile and tells him "that wasn't part of the script right?!" Which gets a chuckle around the arena.
She adds "I can't believe I fought Ronda frickin Rousey, honestly I can't say anything negative about her, she beat me fair and square, she laced up the gloves in the first place for what was a real fight, don't let the exhibition title fool you, I came to kick her ass, but instead my name was taken and I bow to the Queen" bowing to Ronda, who laughs and helps her stand up straight again.
Ronda gets her chance, admitting "I honestly can't believe I did that! I trained the hardest I have since probably the first fight with Miesha Tate"
She adds "I wanted so badly to show that I am far from finished, I hear people claim I was a fraud, that when I faced good competition, I couldn't handle it, I just fought one of thy best boxers, hell any boxer was supposed to beat me right? But I showed why I am one of the ultimate fighting machines in the world"
Todd asks Ronda the big question "would you do another exhibition like this?" To which Ronda replies "maybe me and Miesha need to leave the cage and fight in here or maybe I try the supposed pound for pound Queen in boxing Cecilia Brækhus, but I honestly can't say what the plan is next, I'm just so hyped, all I can say is thank you Lauryn and thank you New York!"
Ronda helps Lauryn out the ring as both fighters plan on getting a drink together to cement their friendship and hopefully numb the pain both are in.
