Anya Taylor-Joy vs Samara Weaving
(Writing: LMW / Results: Lookout!)
Anya Taylor-Joy
(27, 5’7, 21-6 FCBA, League of Mighty Women)
Samara Weaving
(31, 5’4 ½, 15-13 FCBA, Odds & Ends Fight Studio)
Pre-Fight: League of Mighty Women’s Anya Taylor-Joy will be facing Odds and Ends Fight Studio’s Samara Weaving in an anticipated rematch. In their first fight, Anya suffered a savage beatdown at the hands of Samara as both sides accused each other for using dirty tactics and questioned the referee’s decisions. Anya will be coming to this fight with back-to-back wins and she will be looking to avenge that brutal defeat, which she has been vocal about since it happened. As for Samara, she has been struggling lately with back-to-back losses, so she will be looking to get back on track with a repeat dominant performance against Anya.
At the pre-fight press conference, just as Anya opens her mouth to kick things off, Samara interrupts her and addresses the audience first. “We all know what Anya is going to say. She will complain about my alleged dirty tactics and despicable actions, which by the way means the prolonged beating I gave her in the last round. She is just trying to find excuses and rationalize the brutal beating that she suffered, but I got news for her. It is gonna happen again, because like I said before, I’m the grade of fighter that Anya keeps losing to!”
Anya looks like she is trying to hide her anger as she finally gets to speak. “I’m not making excuses, I’m not! You’ll see though. I will make you pay for what you did and even your dirty tactics won’t work this time. My ex-stablemate inadvertently prepared me for this fight as Natalie (Dormer) is a bully who fights dirty like you, but I kicked her ass and I’ll kick yours too!” Samara gets up and starts working towards her opponent with her arms open, daring Anya to try that now. It seems like Anya is willing to give it a try, so she gets up with purpose, but staff from both sides as well as the event security act quick enough to separate the two before they can get into a tussle.
It is fight night and Anya enters the arena first, her coach Gillian Anderson accompanies her. She looks focused as she walks towards the ring and only briefly waves to the fans cheering for her. As she enters the ring, she starts shadow boxing as she listens to Gillian going over their game plan.
She is wearing a black sports bra with pink trim, matching trunks, pink gloves and boots. Her blonde hair is tied into a ponytail.
Next comes Samara with her coach Kelly Carlson beside her. As she walks down the aisle, she opens up her arms and hypes up the crowd, earning a loud cheer from the fans as they are clearly raring to see her savage fighting style.
She is wearing a red bikini set, white gloves and boots, while her blonde hair is left loose and wild.
Both fighters come to the center of the ring to receive the final instructions from the referee, but neither goes for the touch of gloves as they stare intensely at each other. Finally, the referee urges them to step back to their respective corners and we are now ready for 10 rounds of bantamweight action!
Fight: Round 1: The bell rings and the fighters quickly meet at the center as they are ready to get their hands on each other. Samara swings for the body as she steps in, but she misses as Anya lands a stiff jab to keep her at a distance. ATJ quickly follows it up with a double jab-straight combo and then goes for the body with an uppercut to the abs. Samara tries to answer with a hook and get her own offense going, but Anya blocks and lands another rapid one-two combination as she looks like a terminator on a mission. ATJ fakes a jab and then lands a big right hook, which forces Samara to step back and switch to a defensive approach as she seems overwhelmed by her opponent early in this fight.
Samara moves around the ring with her guard up high, but Anya is constantly putting pressure on her with stiff combinations. Some of the punches slip Samara’s guard and land hard on her face, but even when she blocks, her forearms are taking serious punishment. Towards the end of the round, Anya backs her opponent to the ropes and starts swinging hard. Interestingly, Samara gets to fight back for the first time in this opening round with her back against the ropes as she survives the initial flurry and then lands a few good hooks to the ribs. However, ATJ answers back furiously with a strong jab-straight combo that bends Samara back over the ropes. She puts her guard up, going back to defending as she gets swayed left and right by Anya’s hooks, but she manages to make it to the bell without taking any further damage.
A dominant opening round for Anya gives her the early lead. We have seen Anya using high-pressure offense more frequently lately, but this level of aggression is something we haven’t seen from her before. Clearly Samara didn’t expect it either as she looks flustered while sitting on her corner stool during the break. Kelly tries to provide some solutions to her fighter, while Gillian tells Anya to keep up the good work.
Round 2: Anya is on the offense again as she looks to build up on her great start. Samara starts the round with a defensive approach, which is uncharacteristic for her, but she might be looking to weather the storm before setting up her own game plan. She is moving around the ring with her guard up high. Anya steps in with short combinations, but she is only landing a few clean shots. As the round progresses and Anya continues to struggle with putting pressure on her opponent like she did in the opening round, Samara starts to regain her confidence and starts getting inside to land a few body shots. When Anya starts firing back, Samara quickly clinches with her opponent and then lands a few more punches from the clinch before they get separated by the referee. Samara slowly starts to frustrate her opponent like she did in their first fight.
The pace slowed down significantly this round as Samara needed to disrupt her opponent’s momentum. She did that and landed slightly more punches in the meantime, which gave her a narrow win in this round to tie up the score. During the break, Anya and Gillian talk about increasing the pace and the pressure once again, while Kelly tells Samara that it is now time to impose her own fighting style.
Round 3: Anya is on the attack at the start of the third round again and she is trying to increase the pace as she steps in and out of range to throw short combinations. Samara is not willing to let Anya dictate the pace though, so she keeps her guard up and backs off whenever Anya steps in. However, Anya is willing to force the issue and she decides to change strategies and starts chasing Samara when she steps back. She quickly finds success as she lands a few shots and traps Samara to one of the neutral corners. It is what Anya has been looking for, so she rapidly fires punches to the head. The Aussie defends the initial flurry well, but then Anya finds some success when she goes for the body with shovel hooks. Samara clinches with her opponent to stop the assault and before the referee can interfere, Samara wrestles Anya around to switch positions. Then she uses her forehead and forearms to push herself off to create some separation. Now that Anya is the one trapped in the corner, Samara unleashes on her. She goes for Anya’s abs and ribs with a barrage of body shots, looking intent to hurt her. Having trouble dealing with the shots, Anya clinches with her opponent. In the clinch, both fighters land a few questionable punches around the waistline before the referee can separate them.
Samara gains control of the fight after this exchange and it is now Anya’s turn to try to slow things down as the Aussie comes after her. Anya keeps her opponent away for a little while with defensive jabs, but Samara keeps getting inside eventually. She lands a few body shots and then Anya goes for a clinch, but she can’t relax in that situation either as the physical Aussie keeps working her body from the clinch. ATJ looks relieved when the bell signals the end of the round. Samara got her chance and she used it beautifully to turn things around and win the round wide.
Round 4: Samara looks confident as she is on the attack to start the fourth round, but Anya isn’t backing down either as she seems to be willing to fight for control. They stand and trade from close range, each landing some strong shots to the body and the face as they also use shoulder bumps and forearm pushes. It is starting to become a very physical brawl, which favors Samara. Knowing this, Gillian shouts at her fighter to move her feet, but Anya doesn’t seem to hear her as she is caught up in the moment. Samara indeed gains the upper hand as she goes from strength to strength in this close quarters battle while Anya is slowing down as she is not firing back as much and she is having trouble dealing with the Aussie’s power shots to her tummy. As Samara keeps bullying her opponent with those strong belly punches, Anya groans and doubles up, but Samara just palms her up and continues punishing her. This thing is looking more and more like the dreadful beating that Samara gave to Anya in their previous meeting.
As we enter the last minute, it is not looking good for ATJ. Samara is having her way with her since things got physical as they exchange from close range. It is not really an exchange anymore though, as the Aussie is the only one doing the punching for a while. Samara’s punches dig deep into Anya’s tummy as she starts to get limp, so the Aussie uses her left shoulder to keep her opponent up as she keeps punching her abs. She finally gives ATJ a shoulder push, then lands a lead hook to her chin followed by a nasty uppercut to her abs. Anya whimpers as she first falls on her knees and then collapses facedown! Samara goes over to the neutral corner with a smug smile on her face. 1…2…3… Anya is still lying on the canvas as she spits out her mouth guard 4…5…6… she slowly starts getting up on one knee and touches her midsection with one glove, which makes her wince 7…8… she musters up all her strength to get back on her feet and raise her gloves to show the referee that she can continue. After making sure that she can continue, the referee gets Anya’s mouth guard cleaned up and once she is ready the action restarts. Samara immediately puts pressure on her opponent, looking to get a finish, but there is less than half-minute until the end of the round. Anya tightens her guard up, hoping to survive the round as Samara starts throwing more punches. Anya indeed manages to do that as the bell saves her from further punishment.
Samara looks surprised and unhappy as she walks over to her corner. She thought she had her with that knock down, so she is frustrated that she wasn’t able to finish her off. She is now in control of the fight and the scorecards though. During the break, ice packs are applied to Anya’s abs as Gillian tries to get her fired up and focused on the game plan. “Do you want a repeat of the first fight? Do you want Samara to bully you and kick your ass? (Anya shakes her head) Then keep moving your feet, keep your distance and tag her from distance. She will eventually slow down, but don’t let her impose her fighting style on you!”
Round 5: Samara rushes at her opponent at the start of the fifth round as she clearly wants to close this thing out soon. However, Anya isn’t playing into Samara’s hand anymore as she listens to her coach and starts moving around the ring, only using a defensive jab to keep the Aussie away. By the time Samara gets inside and starts throwing, her opponent is already on her way out, so she can only get a few glancing blows out of her attacks. She is still eager to attack and put pressure, but she is nowhere as effective as she was in the previous two rounds. As the round progresses, Samara starts slowing down which gives Anya a chance to start landing short combinations while keeping her distance. Samara expended lots of energy trying to finish ATJ off, especially in the last round as she even carried her weight on her shoulders to prop her up for more punishment. She wasn’t able to finish her off though and looks like she is now paying for it as she is not moving as much and providing a stationary target for Anya, who seems to be regaining her confidence towards the end of the round. She lands one-two combinations consistently as she starts to drive Samara back in the final minute of the round and ends up winning it narrowly. More importantly though, Anya is back in this fight.
Round 6: Anya is looking much better at the start of the sixth round as she moves in and out to land short combinations without getting caught in longer exchanges with her opponent. She is managing her battle damage well at this point and she seems focused on her game plan. As for Samara, she is clearly losing steam and momentum. Her movement is starting to get more and more sluggish with each combination that she is eating and while she is still trying to answer back with her own firepower, she is missing more shots than she is landing in this round.
As the round progresses, ATJ starts to work like a machine as she steps in and out of range, firing double jab-straight combinations like pistons with pinpoint accuracy. Samara is still coming forward like a zombie, but it is not doing her any favors as her head gets snapped back with each impact. Seeing that she is in complete control of the action, Anya starts adding more variety to her combinations and staying in range longer to finally drive Samara back. This way ATJ backs her into the ropes as we are entering the last minute of the round. It is Anya’s turn to unleash on Samara with big hooks as the Aussie gets swayed left and right on the ropes with each punch. Just as it looks like the referee is going to interfere, a big right hook to the jaw drops Samara to the mat with a loud thud! After standing over her fallen opponent for a moment, Anya goes over to the neutral corner as the referee begins the count. 1…2…3… Samara lying on her side, slack-jawed as her mouth guard hangs halfway out 4…5…6… she groans and slowly rolls to her back, but she still seems completely out of it 7…8…9…10! The referee gives Samara the opportunity to make a comeback like Anya did with a ten-count, but she is still lying on the mat! It is all over!
Official Result: Winner via KO in round 6, Anya Taylor-Joy!
Post-Fight: Anya walks over to her defeated foe and places her boot over the Aussie’s face, while raising her hands to celebrate her hard-fought victory. As Anya takes her sweet time with the victory pose, Kelly comes over and pushes her off of her fighter, saying that it is enough. Gillian quickly gets in between them and takes Anya to their corner so that they can focus on their celebrations and not get in an unnecessary tussle. As they celebrate, Samara regains her consciousness on the other side and then she is helped off backstage by Kelly and the medical staff.
Anya gets her hand raised by the referee in the center of the ring and then she takes the microphone to address the crowd after her victory. “Samara got what she deserved. Payback’s a bytch! I told her that I will make her pay for what she did to me and I just did that. I hope she learned her lesson to not be a bully anymore or else I will have to kick her ass again!” With that she leaves the ring as Gillian applies ice packs to Anya’s sore abs, but even that cannot ruin her good mood.
For a moment there, it looked like Anya was going to receive another savage pounding at the hands of Samara, but she came back and returned the favor in the end. It will be a confidence booster for her as she avenged her previous loss to Samara and extended her winning streak. As for Samara, it was a tough loss, which makes it three in a row. She is used to having ups and downs in her career though, so she might just come back with a big win in her next fight. It is also clear that there is no love lost between these two, so it will be interesting to see if they clash for a third time in the future.
