Before: “Well, I know I said I was going to stick to cougar bouts, but Brie challenged me and I haven’t forgotten she beat me in 2018. I wanted to chance to even things up.” Rachel McAdams told the press ahead of her fight with Brie Larson. “There is still plenty of fight left in me and I intend to show that in this fight.”
Brie Larson says: “I hope she does have ‘plenty of fight’ left. I have always admired Rachel. My knocking her out in 2018 is still something I am proud of after. After all, she is a former Bantamweight champion and beating her again will make up for losing that title shot against Minka Kelly. I am really looking forward to this one.”
Brie and Rachel actually shake hands at the end of the presser. (Something of a novelty for FCBA watchers—and disappointment for those ever-hopeful for a pre-fight fracas).
On the night of the fight, Brie enters the ring in a black with gold fringe one piece swimsuit. Golden gloves and boots with black laces. Hair is in a battle braid. Rachel is in her favorite red black and pink one piece with red boots and gloves (black laces.) Her bobbed hair is loose but wetted down. The ring instructions proceed smoothly. Then Brie and Rachel tap gloves and go their corners. The bell rings….
R1: Rachel moves in close on Brie, ducking the taller fighter’s longer reach and pummels Brie hard to the head. Brie looking cramped as now Rachel moves her attack down to Brie’s midsection. Brie backing up, trying to use her jab to force Rachel back, but Rachel bobbing nd weaving, dodging most counters and keeping her leather on Brie’s body. Steady body punching to the bell leaves Brie panting and Rachel looking pleased with herself. Rachelwins to round wide.
R2: Rachel again closes on Brie early on, but Brie makes her wade through some heavy shots to the head and jaw. Still, the determined Rachel is up-close-and-personal with Brie and start firing in the hooks. However, Brie seems to have figured out how to fight at point-blank range and she counters strongly to Rachel’s body. Two are soon pounding away at each other’s bodies, but Rachel getting extra leverage on her hooks, driving Brie up onto her toes again and again. Brie forced to slowly give ground as the round draws to a close and Rachel manages to win by a narrow margin.
R3: Brie faster moving out of her corner this round and she is able to bust up Rachel’s latest attempt to get in close. Hit hard in the chin, jaw and side of the head, Brie’s advance stalls. Now Brie pushes forward with straight shots that bust up Rachel’s face. Rachel lashes back with face shots of her own and suddenly it is Brie’s face being wrecked. Brie pulls back, side steps and smashes a hard right off Rachel’s jaw. Rachel knocked sideways by the force of the blow, but manages to get her mitts up as Brie follows up with a hooks to the belly. Rachel doubled up now gets punches banged off the sides of her head. She answers with hooks to Brie’s midsection. Intense exchange and Brie is now the one slowly pushing Rachel back as the round ends. Round is a close one, but the judges give it to Brie :Larson.
R4: Rachel and Brie both out quickly and fight there way in close once again. Brie now looking more comfortable with this kind of action and she’s whacking away at Rachel’s body in the toe-to-toe. Rachel starting to shudder under these rib roasting, belly burning blows, but she keeps hanging in stubbornly. Finally, as Rachel’s knees start to tremble from a fresh wave of Brie Larson hooks, she falls back gasping for air. It is an orderly pull back and she keeps Brie from exploiting her success, but once again Brie is able to win a close round.
R5: Out they come again and Rachel is moving swiftly. She evades Brie’s long range punches and is able to lunge forward to hit Brie hard to the chin. Brie sent stumbling back, trying to cover her head as Rachel now goes after Brie’s body. It’s a really scrub down starting with Brie’s breasts, then down to her ribs and then to her belly. However, just as it looks like Rachel has Brie headed for the ropes, Brie drives a straight right that catches Rachel flush in the right eye. Rachel staggered by the blow, reels back and now advances forward. However Rachel catches Brie with a desperate right uppercut to the chin. Brie is stopped in her tracks. Rachel gains a fe seconds to recover herself and then follow up. Rachel going her Brie’s jaw, but Brie is successful in keeping her gloves high and blocking these shots. Rachel then works Brie’s ribs with Brie eventually replying in kind. They battle to the bell. Result is another close round, but this time it is Rachel McAdams who wins the stanza.
R6: Once more we have a fast-moving Rachel trying to get under Brie’s long range punching, but this time Brie’s timing is better. Rachel is busted up hard to the jaw and side of the head. Her attack comes to halt and Brie rolls forward neatly attacking to the head and then to the body and then back again. The rapid-fire incoming has Rachel hastily retreating and looking overwhelmed. Brie now able to punch Rachel back into the ropes. Here Rachel fights back with her jab, but she takes more punches to the head, jaw and chin. By the time the bell sounds, Rachel is sagging back against the ropes her face buried in her gloves. Brie Larson wins this one wide.
R7: Foxfire corner crew working hard to patch Rachel McAdams up. The bell sounds and Rachel lurches to her feet. She moves forward slowly, but with determination. Brie Larson moving much more easily, but she is wary as they come within punching distance. Brie again striking first from long range and she quickly finds Rachel not pressing forward at this point, but maintaining a defensive stance. Brie then starts showing her footwork, she is constantly moving, changing position and this serves to keep Rachel off-balance. Then Brie moves suddenly to apparently attack Rachel to the midsection, but as Rachel’s high guard instinctively drops, Brie unloads on the McAdams chin with full power. Rachel smashed by two vicious uppercuts that lift her up onto her toes and then she crashes forward limply draping herself into the arms of a startled Brie Larson. Brie jumps back and Rachel slides down Brie’s front to end up face-down on Brie’s gold boot tops. Brie slides her boots free and departs for the neutral corner. The referee moves in and starts to count. Rachel struggling to push herself up off the canvas, but the effort is too much and she slumps back down as the count goes on.
“…NINE!...TEN!...YER OUT!!!” cries the referee.
THE WINNER: BRIE LARSON DEFEATS RACHEL MCADAMS KO7!
After: Brie Larson helps the fallen Rachel McAdams back to her corner. Once she is assured., Rachel well be all right, she gives Rachel a hug.
“Now I remember why I like fighting Rachel McAdams,” Brie later tells press. “She fights hard until you have to knock her out to win. I tell you, those bantam cougars better watch out. If she gave me this much trouble, they are really in for it!”
A recovered Rachel says: “That was nice of Brie to say. I do like fighting her but after two ‘highlight reel’ knockouts, maybe it’s time to stuck to cougars. Not sorry I fought her though. I think I gave her a good fight, but not for long enough.”
Rachel McAdams’ comments probably a fair judgment on the fight. It was hard-fought with Rachel often able to overcome Brie’s height advantage. However, Rachel couldn’t seem to inflict the damage that Brie inflicted on her especially in R6. Rachel tried to buy time in the 7th with a defensive posture but Brie broke through and really nailed Rachel for the KO. Exciting fight though with a knockout that is bound to make many a highlight reel.
