(31, 5’2, FCBA Debut, Free Agent)
Results: Lookout!; Story: Caspian & The Dollhouse
BEFORE:
Up next, a Celebrity Boxing After Dark fight on the cards, with Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez taking on fellow Canadian and one of the storied veterans of the industry, both inside and outside the ring in Avril Lavigne. Miss Reyez is of course part of a new generation of fighters and entertainers stepping into the gauntlet tonight and doing so for the first time at the age of 31, a similar age to Queen Lavigne’s when the Canadian legend made her surprising return to the ring under the Dollhouse banner back in 2017 at the age of 33 to great success. During the press conference, the newbie looks confident and shored up, her long black curly hair tied up into a neat bundle over her head.
"This is my boxing debut and I'm not here to mess around,” Jessie says confidently. “I'm not here to lose it. I don't care that she’s a fellow Canadian or that Avril is like a Canadian Idol and all that jazz. I have a my gameplan and it ends with me knock her out tonight. I'm gonna be ya'll's new Idol after you see me fight tonight.” Reyez smiles cockily. “Can’t wait to start throwing punches already!”
And there ya have it from the 31-year-old, who firmly believes she can do what many newcomers could not before: that is, knock out a the veteran Doll and start their boxing career with the big upset. Of course, Lavigne can’t help but giggle at the insinuation, shaking her head from the other end of the table, before rolling her eyes as she responds:
"I mean….Jessie who? You're 31 and Canadian and I've never even heard of you? Get on my level b*tch. She's trying to act tough and all but like…. they all do. Then they get in the ring with me and get fucked UP! So yeah b*tch, good luck with all those fantasies. You’re a newbie who’s getting her ass kicked tonight, definitely NOT becoming anyone's freaking idol,” Avril ends with a chuckle, before turning away from Jessie and refusing to give her the time of day for the rest of the press conference.
Hours later, we’re in the ring and right smack in the center of the Galen Center, where both ladies have already sold out a packed stadium. Avril’s in one corner of the ring, soaking in the loud cheers from her fans. The Dollhouse Queen is wearing her usual black sports bra and short tights, lined with hot pink with matching black and pink boxing gloves, her new shorter-length blonde hair hanging loose over her shoulders. She gestures to Jessie across the ring, giving her a thumbs-down with a smirk.
In the other corner, Jessie Reyez is showing off her toned figure, earlier parading about the ring as though the squared circle were part of her very own concert hall and stage. She’s wearing a bright red sports bra and black boxing trunks for this contest, her long black hair tied in a messy high ponytail and she raises a pair of red gloves to the fans when her name is announced.
The referee signals for the start of this match! And HERE WE GO with ten rounds of Flyweight action!
ROUND 1:
Jessie’s fearless and aggressive as the bell rings, clearly not thinking too much of Avril’s chances tonight. The newcomer goes right in, guns blazing, immediately trying to overwhelm Avril with punches galore! Avril is forced to weather the early assault, covering up and keeping her arms close to her chest, as Jessie gets in some hard hits to her sides, the newcomer hammering away at the older girl’s guard. But Avril’s hanging in there, doing more defensive work than offensive, and scoring the occasional jab combo back into Jessie’s face, but not without taking a stiff hit to the lips instead. Reyez is using her younger power to try and score an early knockdown, possibly make a big impression in her debut, but she’s clearly got a ways to go, with her hooks mainly hitting Avril on the arms and not scoring outrightly. Bell rings and Reyez is making a big deal of the fact that she’s won this first round, though we think it’s only by a small margin.
ROUND 2:
Of course, Miss Lavigne has dealt with such insolence before. The Dollhouse Queen plays it cool, again allowing Jessie to storm into her space for the second. Reyez has pure and straightforward power and aggression on her side, slamming another hook into Avril’s lower body, then forcing a big cross into the center of her arms, which pushes her back towards the ropes. But Avril soon bites back, using her own jabs to score through the holes in Jessie’s defenses, tagging the rookie on the chin and cheek, and then returning a big cross to her lips in the final minute. That’s your typical rookie behavior from Miss Reyez, who underestimates her older opponent at the expense of her own defenses. Final seconds of the round and Jessie is still getting stopped in her tracks, another hard punt to her forehead and face making it more difficult to get in close, for now…
ROUND 3:
But Jessie is STILL coming in hot and heavy, surprising Avril with low feints to her body before catching the veteran Doll off the side of the head with follow-up hooks. Avril takes another shot to the ear, sending her grunting and reeling… but the Doll quickly recovers, swerving backwards to avoid another of Jessie’s hooks, then paying the other woman back with a stiff swipe across her face in turn. Both ladies get into a tit-for-tat BRAWL in the center of the ring, Jessie with a good opportunity to showcase her power and strength but the newbie looking a little stunned when Avril doesn’t back away, as predicted, instead SNAPS her head to the side with a return hoo. Jessie is the one ending the round slightly dazed, shaking her head as she fends off some follow-up jabs on her way out. But Avril doesn’t have too long to capitalize, with the bell ringing soon after.
ROUND 4:
Reyez plays it defensively for the first time in the fight, and the first minute becomes a mutual dance and circle, with both women matching each other’s footwork in tandem, and neither wanting to make the first foray in. The girl with more experience wins out in the end, with Avril able to predict and telegraph her foe’s attacks, countering with crisp punches to her nostrils and noggin’. Jessie finally realizes she can’t compete at the same game as her opponent, starts ignoring the damage and lunging suddenly at Avril’s face or body, once or twice snagging her chin or thumping at the ribs to make Avril wince with lost pride. Reyez’s corner is actually egging their girl on, telling her to step on the accelerator now that Lavigne is clearly getting pushed around by her power shots. But for now, Jessie seems content to bang away at the Doll from afar, finally edging her out when the bell tolls.
ROUND 5:
Another push inwards from Jessie, but it’s clear the newcomer is growing tired rapidly. She scores early on with some success, squaring her feet and pounding away at Avril’s body when the two gals meet in the center of the ring. Lavigne gets caught by a big swing to the arms that stuns her briefly, suddenly finding her waistline taking a smattering of shots as the rookie fighter merely bends low and HOUNDS away at her tummy with lefts and rights! Lavigne tries to cover up but stubbornly doesn’t want to back down, tries hammering back at Jessie’s head and body, though she can’t quite keep up with the pace! Lavigne’s getting pushed towards the ropes step by step, groan by groan, and Lavigne is FEELING REYEZ’ POWER as a BIG hook across the jaw sends her sprawling into the nearby ropes! Reyez decides to POUNCE, but can’t quite put the veteran Doll down for good, with Avril either clinching up to avoid her bigger swings, or turtling up low to absorb the remaining attacks till the bell. Jessie with a BIG round when it finally rings, though seems to be out of breath as she walks back to her corner with one arm raised.
ROUND 6:
Jessie’s fans want her to push forward, but it’s getting more and more difficult for the newcomer brunette to keep her aggressive style up. Case in point: she’s eating errant jabs from Avril in the very first minute alone, Lavigne sensing her opponent’s tiredness and deciding to push in to punish. Those crisp lefts and rights are stunning her to the arms and scoring around and above and below them, with Reyez’s own attacks easily avoided by the more experienced fighter. Avril’s has been conserving her stamina from the get-go, and here, she outlasts the younger more eager fighter just long enough to begin picking her apart. Another straight hand to the forehead shoves Jessie back in pain, but Jessie’s not quite done yet! The younger Canadian lets out another war cry, suddenly LUNGING at Lavigne with a big hook! Avril barely intercepts it, and is forced to back away as Jessie chases her down with more swings and punches sent everywhere all at once! Lavigne grunts as a few of those bang into her arms or snag her stomach, but Avril manages to swerve to just avoid another hook aimed high, then countering with a hook of her own right to the JAWLINE that SNAPS Jessie’s head sideaways! AND DOWN REYEZ GOES! Jessie simply toppling sideways, hitting the canvas on her side with a loud THUD! Wow!
Avril already smirking wide as she struts back to the neutral corner and rests against the corner post breathing heavily, watching intently as a stunned Jessie lies on the mat for a few moments before the stubborn rookie decides to make an attempt to rise back up, eliciting an annoyed eyeroll from the panting Lavigne, who surely prefers this to be over with. But Jessie has some of that fighting spirit within her, her arms and legs shaking and wobbling, but still determined to use the nearby ropes to pull herself up and keep fighting. The referee’s diligently counting by her side, and you can see the look of pure determination mixed with agony on the dazed rookie’s face as she concentrates on not falling back down before he reaches 10. But it’s still no use! Jessie makes one last lunge upwards as the count passes 9, but her head is still spinning and her knees suddenly give way, forcing her back down to the ground on all fours! The ref has no other choice but to wave off the rest of this fight as a visibly disappointed Reyez who buries her head in her gloves! It’s OVER via KO6!
Official Decision: Avril Lavigne defeats Jessie Reyez via KO6!
AFTER:
“I hope the b*tch learned her lesson…” Lavigne smiles in a short post-fight interview. “Don’t f*ck with me…no matter how tough you think you are. Especially if you’re a clueless newbie.” The victorious blonde giggles.
Reyez on the other hand, more subdued and morose when asked about the result of the fight, responding with a disappointed look on her face. “Yeah…I should have knocked her out in the 5th….I f*cking had her, but I ran out of time. Need to work on my stamina management, I can go for a long time but I need to pace myself. I tried doing too much too fast tonight. I’ll get her ass if she ever gives me a rematch. Tonight isn’t gonna deter me, I plan to stick around for a WHILE.”
Impressive showing from the rookie tonight who showed plenty of promise, exhibiting toughness, spirit AND power. Alas, Lavigne’s experience was too much for her to overcome tonight but we sure look forward to seeing a lot more of Jessie Reyez in the FCBA ring next year.
As for Queen Lavigne, the Doll has only one week to rest before her big rematch showdown with recent Flyweight champion Dove Cameron on the main PPV in what promises to be one HELL of a battle!
Good luck Avril!
