BEFORE:
"This girl has a TON of potential," Erica says with a nod. "I wouldn't be at ALL surprised if she's a champion some day. Problem is, I'm a champion RIGHT NOW, and she's not in that league. Not yet."
"No doubt she's a challenge and a big one," Tate admits. "But, she's not getting her hand raised tonight. Not tonight."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'Revenge' by Pink you hear, but Pinkness is not coming to the ring. Instead, it's one of her biggest fans, multiple-time lightweight champion Erica Durance!"
Cassie: "And, believe it or not, even though Erica's been fighting for almost 20 years in the FCBA, this is her JMDD debut!"
O'Dell: "Durance into the ring and helped off with the robe to reveal a crimson number and a body that's clearly been training hard for this one. And, that's 'Vicious' you hear booming through the arena, which can only mean that the singer of that tune, 'The Calgary Crusader', Tate McRae is on her way to the ring..."
McCarthy: "And this is only the second JMDD fight for this tomato can, so it's not like she has much of an edge in experience..."
Tess: "And, obviously, when it comes to fighting experience, Erica has a HUGE edge, over 70 fights compared to a dozen for Tate, who, by the way, was a few months past her FIRST BIRTHDAY when Durance made her FCBA debut in 2004..."
McCarthy: "Nothin' but a number, Walmart. Nothin' but a number."
O'Dell: "McRae into the ring and helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve and the crowd appreciating the lovely brunette in that admiral blue number she likes. Ladies about ready to go. Time for some picks. Tess likes Tate. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Nothin' but a number! Durance!"
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "Here we go. McRae on the move as we get started. She's got the jab working, she's moving the feet, creating space and getting her box on. Durance doing some recon right now, probing forward here and there, mostly just gathering info..."
McCarthy: "This is JMDD! Get AFTER it!"
O'Dell: "Ladies working hard at the moment, but nobody committing just yet. Tate getting that space she wants with the quick piston left. Erica trying to find ways around all that, looking to get to spots and get off. Right now, she's not having much success."
Tess: "Durance is a very good athlete. She doesn't often run into a better one. She has tonight."
O'Dell: "No doubt, and that might be playing into some of what we're seeing right now. Erica's a veteran. She's going to take her time and use that experience to find weaknesses she can exploit. Final seconds tick away and there's the bell. The first goes to Tate."
Cassie: "And, McRae takes the 10-9 lead."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "A bit more aggression from both fighters as we start the second. Durance willing to work at range. She's a very good boxer, of course, and she has just as much reach as her rival. Tate all right on these terms as well."
McCarthy: "This is JMMD! Get AFTER it!"
O'Dell: "We ARE seeing a little work to the rack, as the ladies drop in right hands behind the left jabs, but there's definitely a lot more boxing than we're used to seeing in JMDD bouts. Tate showing respect for the former champion here..."
Cassie: "While Erica's showing respect to a girl with the power and athleticism Tate combines."
O'Dell: "Into the final seconds of what's been a very competitive second. McRae a good right hand and Erica responds with a NICE combination, her best of the fight. There's the bell. Close in the second, Durance is going to get the points."
Tess: "And even things at 19."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Things starting to pick up as we start the third. Ladies getting busier, sitting down on punches more, getting some sharp exchanges going. McRae stepping to some, working to body and jug. Erica responding in kind as the two Canadians go at it!"
McCarthy: "About TIME! This is JMDD!"
Tess: "BFF, elbow Mac. I think she's stuck in a loop..."
McCarthy: "Shut UP, WALMART!"
O'Dell: "Drink up, boys, but don't look away from the screen, because the action is getting hot and heavy in there. Ladies trading some serious leather to head and body. Nothing sloppy, mind, but plenty of hard shot is landing at the moment..."
Cassie: "Tate getting the better of it."
O'Dell: "She is. She's backing Durance up here and there and generally landing cleaner punches. Erica firing back, hooking jug, and McRae shows two can play at that game. There's the bell! An action-packed third goes to Tate, who pulls into a 29-28 lead."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Fourth underway and things are not slowing down. Ladies after one another here, both trying to grab hold of this thing, and neither willing to allow the other to take control. Seeing some of that experience from Durance now, Mac, as she slips and dips, feints and counters..."
McCarthy: "Nothin' but a number! She'll beat this stiff!"
O'Dell: "Erica hooking some rack. Tate giving a little ground then landing a NICE right hand as Durance steps in again. Ladies working at middle distances now, both getting off lusty. Older woman getting the better of things in there this time, though."
Cassie: "All subtle little things she's doing, but they're effective."
O'Dell: "Are, indeed. We're down under fifteen to go in the fourth. BIG exchange and then another as both fighters land some solid right hands. Durance goes jug again and Tate responds with a hook to the rack of her own at the bell. Erica's round."
Tess: "And, we're even at 38."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Picking up where we left off as we start the fifth. Durance and McRae after one another, both working head, body, rack, banging away, but not forgetting about defense. Punches are slipped and blocked, but plenty are getting through..."
McCarthy: "Durance is about to take this tomato can OUT..."
O'Dell: "DOWN GOES ERICA! A BLISTERING right hand from Tate and Durance is blown to her back. McRae to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Six. Erica sits up at seven. Eight. To her feet at nine. Ref going to give the former champ the mandatory...and wave on Tate!"
Tess: "Still two full minutes to go..."
O'Dell: "McRae backing the older woman up with a blizzard of leather, trapping her on the ropes and GOING RACK! Tate hup-hup into the jugs. Erica trying to cover up. NICE right hook wobbles her, and Tate going RACK again...IT'S OVER! The ref leaps in and it's OVER! And your winner by TKO5 is 'The Calgary Crusader', Tate McRae!"
Cassie: "That was some good stuff from Tate!"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Tate McRae, and Tate, things went from tactical to physical in there..."
Tate: "Yeah, no doubt. Obviously, she's a champion and has lots of experience. She knows how to fight. But, I knew if I fought my fight, I could get her. I can hit with anybody in this division, and there's nobody who can match my athleticism. And, I got her."
Tess (smiling): "You turn 20 tomorrow, and you've already had 13 FCBA fights. You've fought light and welter, the beach and JMDD, what's next?"
Tate: "Any and all of that. I'm just going to keep working, keep getting better at everything, you know?"
Tess: "Happy early birthday!"
Tate (smiling): "Thanks, Tess!"
"This girl has a TON of potential," Erica says with a nod. "I wouldn't be at ALL surprised if she's a champion some day. Problem is, I'm a champion RIGHT NOW, and she's not in that league. Not yet."
