Our reporter and his blonde companion sit watching baseball and basketball at Bazz with Cassandra Lynn Scerbo, Poindexter Del Crunchy, and the Man In The Hat.
Reporter: "So, Wiz, Tess says you're the smartest manager going..."
Man In The Hat (laughing): "Oh, I don't know about that. If I were so smart, I might have better than a 2-14 record at welterweight. Rich Kotite did better than that for the Jets..."
Pointy: "As I recall, he did better than that ONE season, and the next season he was a game worse..."
Man In The Hat (smiling): "Correct as usual, Pointman. But, you get MY point. 2-14 won't cut it. And, we tried everything...all kinds of different girls, all kinds of different styles. Everything. And, nothing worked. So. I'm not that smart."
Tess: "But, you DO get your girls title shots..."
Man In The Hat (nodding): "We do. Chloe's will be number 31. Of course, we've also been here 11 years, so, that's fewer than three a year and that average ain't gonna get any higher, considerin' five of those shots were at welter and we don't compete there anymore."
Cassie: "We'll make it up with more shots at the weights we're concentrating on. We're deep at all three of them."
Man In The Hat: "We'll see. Point is, I ain't anything special as a manager. I'm just like everybody else around here. We're all tryin' ta do the same things, build a stable of girls who can win fights and titles. Look around and see how many managers have done that. Look at Fates and VIXENs as examples of newer stables. Fates hasn't even been around three years. They've gotten McNamara a title shot already. Larson's had one already. DiDonato's won two. They got Prinsloo a shot. All that in less than three years. In less than five years, VIXENs has already won the flyweight gold with Collins and Watson...that's one more flyweight title than we've had in eleven years, they won JMD with Ratajkowski, the Ice Hotel and the lightweight gold with Ren, got shots for Lopilato, Agdal, and Krsmanovic, and won THREE titles with Ferguson. Caspian might be the smartest manager in the FCBA."
Reporter: "Well..."
Man In The Hat: "How about Bonzo? Who's ever dominated a division like Bonzo has welter? And, it ain't just that he signed and developed Righetti. He won a bunch of gold with Lilly, won titles with Larter, and now he's turned Kosarin, Kostek, and Teles into stars. Lookout! has a whole ROSTER of champions. Hudgens, Lovato, VanCamp, Lilly, Jenner, Peregrym. Strahovski, and Upton, who might be the biggest star and the best pound-for-pound fighter in the FCBA. Dollhouse has made Thorne into, arguably, the best bantam in the world. GBS has been here a coupla years and they've already won a title with Sweeney. Holloway's made Sagra a champ, LCA's done something we'll never do and won all four lineal titles, Medallion's won a pile of titles, Foxfire is a Hall of Fame stable if there ever was one, Hawkeye keeps dominatin' the two lower divisions, PLP's won titles for three of the four original members, and Odd Man has the best beach stable on the planet and has won ALL EIGHT TITLES, including the Ice Hotel, the Body Saddle, and both JMD and JMDD. I ain't the smartest manager around here. And, the more I think about this, I might be the dumbest."
Cassie: "Come ON, Uncle Wiz..."
Man In The Hat: "Look, managin' comes down to making one of two decisions...and there are only two. Either, it's time to make big changes or it's time to let things ride. There's no in-between...not if you know what you're doin'. It's either, 'We're OK with what we're doin'. Let's keep workin' and gettin' better and we'll get results.' or it's 'This AIN'T workin', and it's time to shake things up.' The key to managin' is knowin' what to do when. I think we've done OK with that. But. Am I HAPPY with what we've done the last 11 years? No. I am NOT. I'm NOT happy it didn't come together for Graham. I'm NOT happy Jamie Lynn flamed out when she shoulda been champion. I'm NOT happy Seyfried couldn't get over the hump. I'm NOT happy we couldn't get McCurdy to take the last step. I'm NOT happy Scherzinger went from the hottest bantamweight prospect on the planet to a girl who couldn't beat anybody. I'm NOT happy we threw no fewer than EIGHT fighters at the welterweight title and couldn't grab it once and that Utgaard, who has the best physicals I've ever SEEN is now to the point where she can't beat ANYBODY. So, no. I am NOT happy. But. I'm bettin' every manager around here, if he or she sat back and thought about how their time in the FCBA has gone, would say the same thing. We all have regrets. And, they ain't too few to mention, at least in my case. Now. Let's watch some ball."
