BREC BASSINGER VS SAAYA IRIE
Results: Lookout Writing: Archer
Brec: 22 YO, 5’2 (1.57 m), 7-6-0, 7 KO since 2017, Foxfire Boxing
Saaya: 23 YO, 4’11 (1.50 m), FCBA Debut, Revolution Boxing
Before: Latest Revolution Boxing member to make her FCBA debut is Saaya Irie, who is from Japan and seems not at all concerned about her 4’11 height.
“I have always been the smallest girl in my gym since I first started my boxing training. Fighting taller opponents is how I learned the sport. I am confident that I can handle this Brec Bassinger. After all she hasn’t won a fight this year in three tries. I look forward to making her 0-4.”
“If she thinks bringing up my 2021 record is going to give her some kind of edge—she’s wrong,” an irritated Brec Bassinger says. “I was actually looking forward to this. It’s not often I have a 3 inch advantage on an opponent. It seemed kind of refreshing. I guess she thinks a little trash will distract me.”
“I was just pointing out a fact,” Saaya says innocently. “She has lost 3 times this year. Did she really think no one has noticed?”
“Keep it up,” Brec said in a dangerous voice, “and we’ll see how you feel about it after the fight.”
“Oh, now I have gone an upset her. I should have realized it would be a sensitive issue with her, but, as I said, it simply a fact,” Saaya continued as Brec smouldered.
“I will see you in the ring!” Brec snapped and stalked away.
“Oh, you most certainly shall see me in the ring,” Saaya said and she seemed rather pleased with herself.
Come the night of the fight, Brec entered in ring in a simple black bikini with white gloves and boots (black laces). Her hair in a ponytail. Saaya in a pink bikini with black gloves and boots (pink laces). Brec looks at Saaya coldly, but Saaya just smiles at her which seems to irritate Brec all the more. However the ring instructions are covered without interruption and there is a quick tap of the gloves before the fighters go to their corners. DING! DING! The bell sounds and the fight begins…
R1: Saaya out of her corner very quickly, but so is Brec and the blonde welcomes Saaya to the FCBA with a straight right to the mouth. Saaya knocked back on her heels and Brec now starts adding more head shots. Saaya hit hard to the side of the head and the jaw. Saaya then shows mobility by circling out of range and forcing Brec to give chase. Brec looks to be trying to cut off the ring and drive the rookie into the ropes, but Saaya gives her the slip again and again. However Saaya not really getting in many counters in answer to Brec steady shots to head and body. The elusive Saaya makes to the bell, but it’s Brec who has most of the points this rpund which she wins easily.
R2: Brec seems determined to get Saaya into those ropes and keep her there. They exchange punches early and Brec makes move to block Saaya when she attempts to scoot away. However Saaya then seems to surprise Brec by moving in close and hammering away with surprisingly strong hooks to the belly. Brec trying to punch Saaya back, but now the rookie is standing her round and trading with the blonde punch for punch. Then Saaya spots an opening to the jaw and cracks a fast right hand off Brec’s jaw. Brec shudders from the impact and then gets stuffed with more hooks to the belly. Brec now giving ground. Saaya Irie’s elbows churning like high speed piston rods as they work over Brec’s abs. Brec fighting back with hooks of her own, but Saaya proving able to absorb this punishment. They battle down to the bell. Saaya and Brec step back. Brec looks wonderingly at Saaya who gives her a defiant look before marching to her corner.
R3: Saaya again charging forward and this time she is using that mobility to draw Brec off balance. The a cracking right to the jaw, staggers Brec, Saaya slides in front of the dazed blonde and pumps in four uppercuts to the chin, then finishes with a left to the jaw. Brec floundering back suddenly finds the nimble Saaya is cutting off the ring on her! Brec gets herded towards the ropes. Brec trying to fight her way clear, but then takes another chin shot that throws her back into the ropes. Brec now huddles against the strands, covering her face as Saaya Irie lashes away with waves of punches against Brec’s vulnerable body. Brec gasping and groaning as Saaya’s body attack goes on and on. Finally Brec wraps her arms around Saaya in a desperate clinch. This causes referee to intervene and buys Brec a few moments. Saaya right back on the attack, but Brec weathers it to the bell. Saaya Irie wins the round wide.
R4: Brec under pressure, facing another loss, and she goes at Saaya Irie with desperate punching. Saaya takes right/left to the head, but ducks down and gets in close to resume her attack on Brec’s body. Brec answering with a better body punching this time. She is raking Saaya’s body with short range, but leveraged power. Saaya hangs in there stubbornly, but gradually the force of Brec’s punching starts to have an effect. Saaya being driven back step by step as Brec’s punches dig into her abs, ribs, and breasts. Saaya’s body punches are still striking home, but they don’t seem to having the power of Brec’s shots. They go down to the wire once again, stopping only when the bell sounds. Brec and Saaya standing there, sweat dripping down their bodies as they pant with the effort just expended, they seem to study each other momentarily then turn away. Round goes to Brec Bassinger but it is close.
R5: Saaya seems determined to make up for Brec forcing her back in the previous round. She comes in close and starts trading to the body once more. The intensity climbs as the steady sound of leather against wet flesh can be clearly heard by ringsiders. They are toe to toe and trying not to take a step back. This reaches a frenzied effort late in the round, when Brc suddenly steps back and Saaya stumbles forward. BOOM! BOOM! Smashing right/left uppercuts catch Saaya under the chin and then a BIG right to the jaw. SAAYA IRIE SPINS TO THE CANVAS! Saaya ends up in a heap as Brec seeks the neutral corner and the referee steps in. Saaya shaking her head and then making a valiant effort to stand. She makes it up as the referee is calling “NINE!”
Quick check of Saaya by the referee and then Brec is waved back in. Saaya not willing to go into the typical post-knockdown tight defense. Instead, the rookie goes out boldly to confront in incoming Brec. Saaya throws a big right hand at Brec’s head, but it whistles passed the blonde’s ear as Brec’s right hand connects HARD to Saaya’s jaw. Saaya staggering away, now covering her head as Brec swoops in to pummel Saaya’s right side with punches to drive her towards the ropes. Saaya trying to slide away along the ropes, but Brec gets an uppercut into her chin behind Saaya’s weak high guard. Saaya lurching back, arms falling to her sides as Brec bashes away with rights and lefts to the head. Ringsiders screaming at the referee who FINALLY jumps in and cradles Saaya Irie to safety. Brec Bassinger sags against the ropes looking totally winded, but there is a big smile on her face.
THE WINNER: BREC BASSINGER DEFEATS SAAYA IRIE TKO5
Before: “I admit she got to me with her pre-fight needling,” Brec Bassinger says following the fight, “but she is one tough small flyweight. You couldn’t believe someone that small could punch with that much power. I am glad I won and I earned it, fighting it out with her in the trenches. This was one heck of a debut.”
Saaya Irie not saying much even the next day: “My post-fight medical report was fine. A lot of bruises and swellings, but nothing more serious. I am very sorry I was not able to win this fight. I think I showed I can stand up to someone bigger than myself, but I just couldn’t pull off the win. I will be back, I assure everyone of that.”
Action packed battle of tiny terrors should have pleased Flyweight Division fans. Saaya Irie did stand up to Brec Bassinger but fell to an old trick in the 5th. Badly needed win for Brec Bassinger, but she has a long way to go to get back on track to serious Flyweight Division contention. Saaya Irie no doubt unhappy at her loss, but she did show promising mobility, toughness and even punching power. They weren’t enough this time, but hopefully future outings will be more successful.
