BEFORE: Joy Corrigan booked a spot on Odds & Ends beach boxing card but she jumps on another PPV chance to shut down Kelly Gale's hopes of becoming a player on the American boxing scene. The talented Swede is widely picked to take over the Girls Friday's lightweight challenge once Alessandra Ambrosio finally hangs her gloves next month but some pundits fear she might repeat Sara Sampaio's career struggles and just couldn't answer the FCBA demand despite plenty of promise.
"We got burned by the Sampaio experience but Kelly won't repeat the same mistakes!", Girls Friday lightweight coach Gisele Bundchen speaks a confident voice ahead of tonight's fight: "There is life without Ambrosio for us and Kendall Jenner will be backed by a tremendous talent in Kelly Gale! We're happy the Lioness Club offered us this opportunity but Joy Corrigan is another of these overrated and very loud blondes who don't know when to shut up! We'll let Kelly's gloves do all the talking, mind you!"
Joy Corrigan wears a red bikini set with black trim & black gloves. Long blonde hair tied in a custom ponytail. Kelly Gale wears a light blue bikini set & yellow gloves. Long black hair tied in a sleek ponytail. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the lightweight division.
Round 1:
Aggressive start from Joy allows her to outwork the brunette in close range as both women channel the slugging route and trade vicious leather until Kelly gets caught flush on the jaw and thinks better off it. However she can't quite escape the blonde's range and eats more punches up the middle as Joy's gung-ho tactics pays off big time as she rattles the fellow model and pancakes her onto the turnbuckle where she keeps raining punches like skittles to stun Gale into an earmuff cover. Woof! Kelly shows very little resilience and barely throws a punch in response while Corrigan duly cleans her up and flies in with a brutal hook right at the end to sink the brunette on visibly soft knees!
Round 2:
Coach Bundchen looks worried already as Kelly can't find a way to tame the American's slugging attack early in the second. However Joy begins to taunt the subdued opponent rather than keep on with the aggressive success and gets dragged into unneccessary counter-punching heaves that actually bring Gale back to the table. She cracks a left hook on the temple and tags the blonde's jaw before leaning into her guts to force a phone booth exchange where Corrigan doesn't look so dominant anymore. More back & forth action is only slowed down by an accidental head-butt that makes Joy angry but Kelly steals the round late with another harpoon drive that forces the American to clinch her by choice.
Round 3:
Joy's imperial attacks fail to connect and Kelly rides more counter-punching waves to stick meaningful leather into the blonde's face and leave her visibly frustrated down the stretch. The Swedish model owns superior mobility at this stage but refuses to lock Corrigan in another phone booth and prefers to pick her off in mid-range maybe counting on the blonde to blow her fuse again. Joy barks in anger once she keeps grazing the brunette's flesh and gets caught by another late storm when she misjudges the brunette's leap and is slow to react to the uppercut combo. Kelly whacks the blonde on the chin several times and has the audacity to blow a kiss straight into the camera once the bell halts the action.
Round 4:
Joy's trigger-happy approach proves useless since she can't stun Gale with any of her power punches and allows the Swede to score easy style points through methodical jabbing instead. There's no chance Corrigan is actually hurt here but she looks desperate enough for Kelly to cash in with more jabs up the middle. Joy's body language tells the difference and she gets caught with a big overhand on the nose when she tries to square up to the Swedish woman; Kelly stands her ground and bursts with a head-hunting combo that leaves Corrigan's lips swollen come the two-minute mark and it's back to more counter-punching from afar as Joy tries to stick her foot in the door but just can't do anything with Gale's superior footwork at this stage.
Round 5:
Gisele Bundchen thinks Joy is there to be had given her short fuse and Kelly goes in more aggressive to force a slugging trade-off early in the fifth. This brings the fight onto the blonde's playground but obviously the Girls Friday camp thinks it's time to go for the highlight reel KO! Kelly holds her own working on Joy's swollen's lips for majority of the round but can't land that haymaker/piledriver punch and gets caught by a booming right hand on the temple as Corrigan survives the slugging test and bangs one to break the brunette's resilience. Ugh! Kelly stumbles to the side and doesn't raise her gloves fast enough as the American nails her with a nasty uppercut on the jaw. Kelly's balance was way off upon impact and she CRASHES DOWN ON HER BACK to silence the Girls Friday faithful on the spot! Ugh! Kelly looks sharp enough to beat the count at five... very fast indeed and the clock expires before Joy can get back into action but all the good work has been lost as the Lionesses roar in delight leaving Kelly and Gisele in a heated argument during the break.
Round 6:
Joy takes full advantage of the knockdown hype and tears into Kelly from the word go while the Girls Friday crew remains puzzled what to do here... how about telling Kelly to punch right back... oh, well... it's ALL Corrigan here in the sixth as she blitzes the stunned Swedish girl who shows plenty of durability but just can't stop the haze as Joy backs her into the ropes and keeps lashing out in supreme style. She inflicts more lumps on Kelly's pretty face than during previous five rounds combined and keeps hunting for that one ineviteable shot here. Kelly can't even land one proper counter-punch as she remains trapped on the ropes and is lucky to survive the rough experience but walks very gingerly back to her corner after the bell and doesn't even have enough awareness to argue her case with coach Bundchen trying to salvage whatever pride she can.
Round 7:
Kelly refuses to quit on her stool but Joy keeps thumping her hand over fist as she literally shoves the brunette's mitts into her face before the wheels come off... Kelly's head snaps back repeatedly upon impact and Joy traps her victim in a hooking blaze that is hard to watch let alone experience... give Gale all the resistance credit here but she eventually tails off when a triple uppercut combo sends her into shimmy shake departure... Corrigan still lands one last hook on the temple TO DROP THE SWEDE FACE-DOWN FOR THE COUNT!!! And there's just no way Kelly beats the count here so the ref waves the fight off on the spot! KO7 Joy Corrigan!!!
AFTER: That's one vicious knockout to crown Joy's comeback but all the focus should be on Gisele Bundchen's coaching effort which basically cost Kelly Gale her maiden FCBA victory. The counter-punching drill worked extremely well until the Brazilian model ordered a proper slugging attack that blew straight into Gale's face. Using Corrigan's short fuse against her was the perfect plan until the Girls Friday coach lost her patience and sadly Kelly fell for the slugging trap as she never recovered after that knockdown late in the fifth. This was a huge opportunity wasted for the Alessandra Ambrosio heir apparent!
