Jack Gordon: Hello everyone and welcome back to Comediennes Breakdown, the show where we breakdown past and future fights for The Comedienne stable. I’m Jack Gordon, joined by Senior Fight Analyst Chips McDougal and former FCBA Welterweight, Lucy Lawless.
We’ll start first with the two fights to start the year. Elyse Willems versus her own head trainer Alyssa Milano and Rachel Brosnahan versus Kate Mara. Chips, what do you have for us on those fights?
Chips McDougal: Hi Jack, well as far as the intra-stable fight between Willems and Milano we’ve heard that this was a spur of the moment kind of thing. There have been growing pains in their boxer-trainer relationship so far, so this was a way for them to almost see who is “top dog” in the stable. Elyse being the captain and Alyssa being the trainer.
Elyse ended up winning the fight, but Alyssa I think proved her point. Elyse has some glaring weaknesses in her game that Alyssa was able to exploit. Elyse won due to her power advantage and stronger chin, but Alyssa no doubt looked more technically sound. I’m hearing the fight has cooled down the heat between the two and they’re working together very closely for the upcoming PPV.
Jack: Yeah, very interesting when we get some insight into what’s going on in the gym. Lucy, what did you take away from Rachel’s win over Kate?
Lucy Lawless: Well Jack, I think what we were looking for was how she responded to adversity. And she responded incredibly well. Mara isn’t a heavy hitter by any means, but we knew that Rachel had the striking capability to keep up with just about any flyweight. What we didn’t know is how tough she was.
But, she got knocked down not once but twice and still managed to scratch out a win. Really a testament to her resiliency that, let’s be honest, was a bit of a question mark for the green fighter.
Jack: We’re going to turn to the PPV fights in just a moment, but Chips I hear you have some news regarding a few Comedienne fighters?
Chips: Yeah Jack, we have news of two confirmed fights that will be happening before the PPV. First, Rashida Jones will be taking on Olivia Munn of the Sceej stable. I’m told that this is in an effort to get Rashida some more recognition at the Bantamweight class. The Comediennes feel that while she is an unbeaten fighter, that the top 15 of the Flyweight class is going to be tough for someone like Rashida to break into at this point in her career.
However, her power gives her a decent chance to hang with some Bantamweights. So the idea is to test her out in the Bantamweight class for the time being. Obviously she has her fight with Alice Eve in the PPV and already has a win over Milana Vayntrub. Adding Munn to the list of Bantam fights could give her some legitimacy moving forward. I’m told she also has a shortlist of potential bantams she’d like to fight, and that everyone’s favorite boxer Jenny McCarthy is on the list.
Lucy: Nobody’s favorite fighter is J-Mac… well except for probably Jenny herself.
Chips: Haha, well we know there’s some bad blood between Jenny and Comediennes captain Elyse. Seems Rashida might want to make her presence known as well.
Beyond that we’re hearing rumblings of a bit of a “teaser” fight between Alanah Pearce and Sofia Vergara for their PPV matchup. Not a boxing match, but we’re told something a little more intimate. Not sure quite what they have planned, but discussions are apparently moving forward pretty quick.
Jack: Thanks for that information Chips. Okay you two, time for fight predictions. We’ll start with the Rashida fights. First Jones vs Munn, Lucy who do you got?
Lucy: I just think Rashida is on a roll right now and Olivia is settling into a new stable. Give me Rashida.
Chips: I agree, Rashida is just boxing too well right now to lose to someone on a fifteen fight losing streak. Give me Jones.
Jack: Okay, what about her PPV fight against Alice Eve?
Lucy: Alice has been absolutely killing it over in the BBU, which I know isn’t the same competition level of the FCBA but still… wins are wins. I think I have to go with Eve on this one.
Chips: Alice almost gained the BBU Bantamweight Title in November and she has a really recent win over Lea Seydoux. I think it’ll be really tough for Rashida to pull this one off. I have to give Eve the edge.
Jack: Okay, moving on to Elyse Willems and Debby Ryan.
Lucy: Give me Elyse big time in this one. Debby just doesn’t have the technical chops to make someone like Elyse pay and she doesn’t have the pure power ability to just sock her like a Billie Eilish. Elyse should take this one pretty handedly.
Chips: Yeah, Debby has some ability but until she puts it all together I don’t think she can hang with top 50 fighter like Willems. Give me Elyse in round 5.
Jack: Next up we have Rachel Brosnahan vs Emilia Clarke. Lucy?
Lucy: First off, what a great match-up. I really really love this fight. Emilia has flashed ability in the past and she has gone after some big names, which is why her 2020 record is deceiving. I love Rachel’s striking ability though, and have to give her the slight edge going into the fight.
Chips: Lucy, you brought up that 2020 season for Emilia. She had a 1-5 record, but she had losses to McNamara, Dyer, and Watson… all of those are legitimately great flyweights. Then she took losses to two bantamweights in Winnick and Vikander. Plus she had a win over Setlla Hudgens, who is no slouch. I just think Emilia is battle tested and Rachel isn’t, plus the optics on Emilia’s losses are better than any of Rachel’s wins. I have to go Clarke on this one, but probably a deep fight… round 8.
Jack: And finally we have Alanah Pearce vs Sofia Veragara.
Lucy: Alanah’s only outing has been against Daddario and she looked bad. Vergara is an older and much more vulnerable opponent. If she loses this one… it’s going to be tough for her to respond. I’ll go with the younger Pearce to get it done.
Chips: Lucy, you bring up Pearce’s only fight against Daddario, apparently there was some concern in the Comediennes stable after that performance. As you know they cut Whitney Cummings, who had a really good showing in a loss to Yvonne Strahovski. I’m told the Comediennes went back and forth on which girl to cut between Cummings and Pearce. They stuck with youth despite Cummings being the better fighter now.
So that means Alanah HAS to win this fight. If she loses to a pushing 50 Sofia Vergara there are going to be some serious decisions that will have to be made about her future with The Comediennes. I’m told Alanah has improved greatly in the months off, but at this point she has to show me. Until then I can’t pick her to win. I’ll take Vergara.
Jack: And that’ll do it for Comediennes Breakdown, look for our post PPV reactions coming up. And as always we’ll be here with any breaking Comediennes news. Until then that’s Chips McDougal, that’s Lucy Lawless, and I’m Jack Gordon signing off!
