Demi Lovato vs. Alyson Michalka
BEFORE:
Pair of former bantamweight champions and elite fighters at the weight, and both are looking to shove their way back to a shot at the gold. And, it's not surprising that the path for both goes through the other. Also not surprising is that fact that neither is lacking in confidence. "Everyone knows she can fight, that she's dangerous," says Aly with a nod. "But, there's no one in this division that has my combination of length, athleticism, stamina, and power."
"Aly's a challenge, sure," says Demi. "But, I've had bigger challenges. And left them sucking canvas."
ROUND ONE:
Aly wants distance early, tries to enforce same with the jab. Lovato, though, knew this was coming, and she has a plan for that. Shorter brunette tucks the head, goes into a half-crouch, works her way forward with the gloves high, gets past the defenses, starts to work inside. Michalka trying everything to get the range she wants, but can't do it. Demi crowding, banging, tenderizing tummy and ripping ribs before landing hard shot upstairs. Alyson all SORTS of out of sorts. Just can't seem to get anything going. Demi, meanwhile, is in rhythm, getting what she wants, scoring points and piling up punishment. Late in the round, Aly begins tying up, slowing Lovato that way, but it's far too late to make a difference. By the time the bell rings, Lovato's taken the round wide to lead 10-9.
ROUND TWO:
Lovato again looking to move forward, but now Aly makes an adjustment. She uses a drop step to create a little more space and time and begins banging that jab off and between Demi's gloves, slowing the shorter brunette down. And, leaving her out on the end of Michalka's punches. Yeah. Not at ALL where she wants to be. Now, it's Demi who can't get to her spots and Aly who's getting work done, using all that length to keep her rival at bay while punishing her with hard combinations to the head. Lovato not hurt, but she's getting touched up and good as Michalka's getting into serious rhythm now. Aly becoming more and more dominant as the round goes on, and, when the bell rings bringing it to an end, she's taken the points wide to even things at 19.
ROUND THREE:
More Michalka. She's got it firing on all cylinders now, and she's giving Demi a beating. Lovato can't get forward, can't get to spots to punch. Instead, she's being kept at bay by barrages of accurate fire from the taller woman, who is, frankly, showing everyone just why she's so damn good. The footwork is excellent. The punches are sharp and clean, out and back quickly. And she's showing excellent ring generalship, forcing the terms she wants on her opponent. And, that's not just any opponent she's giving a beating to. It's one of the best bantams on the planet. Then, things get worse for Lovato. BOOM! Late in the round a straight right hurts Demi, who wobbles and nearly goes down. That quickly, Aly is all in, letting her rival have it with both hands, backing her to the ropes and punishing her. The bell rings before things get even worse, but Aly's got the points wide and moves into the lead 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Michalka all over Lovato. Demi's still wobbly and Aly's taking full advantage, backing up the shorter girl with hard shot to the head and even a bit of body work. Lovato all defense, giving ground, blocking, slipping, firing back only in spots as she takes a thumping from the taller woman. Michalka looking to finish this thing, but, barring that, wants to make sure she cleans up, and she's doing the latter while Lovato frustrates her attempts at the former. Late round sees Demi begin to stabilize her front and bang back and all of a sudden we've got a FIREFIGHT IN THERE! Ladies banging away at one another as the crowd goes crazy. Lovato backs Michalka up a step, but Aly responds with a three punch combination that leaves Demi covering up at the bell. It's Michalka's round, wide, and Aly's now up 39-37, but Demi appears to be back in it.
ROUND FIVE:
Lovato aggressively forward. Michalka using the drop step and the jab, but now Demi's finding ways past, getting inside, working some body. Aly slowing her up by tying her up, forcing breaks, getting back to range. Michalka scoring outside until Demi works in. Then Lovato takes control until Michalka ties her up and forces another break. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. BOOM! Uppercut, Demi! Lovato lands a sharp right uppie and Aly is HURT! Michalka stumbles backward into the ropes and Demi lets the hands go. Lovato bangs away upstairs for a bit, then begins to take advantage of the fire sale on body Michalka's holding. Taller women getting PUNISHED to belly and ribs, but keeping that guard high to ride out Hurricane Demi. It isn't easy, but Michalka manages it, making it to the bell. When it rings, Demi's got it wide, but Aly's still on top 48-47.
ROUND SIX:
Lovato pressing the advantage. She's walking through Michalka's punches now, as Aly still doesn't have the legs under her. This allows Demi to turn the "pressure" knob up to eleven. She's sitting down on punches, thumping the taller brunette to both head and body. Michalka trying to manage, giving ground, jabbing back, trying to play for time while Demi piles up points and punishment and BOOM! Right hook, Lovato! Michalka wobbles and IS DROPPED BY A LEFT UPPERCUT! Aly down on her back after a pair of BOOMING punches from Demi! Lovato quickly to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Michalka staring up at the ref all wide-eyed. She rolls to her belly at six, begins crawling for the ropes, but there's no time. She's just grabbing the bottom rope when the count passes her by. It's OVER! And your winner by KO6 is Demi Lovato!
AFTER:
Demi smiling but looking plenty scuffed in the post. "This is what I'm telling you," the brunette beauty says. "There are a lot of good bantams in the FCBA. But. I'm a step above all of them. I'm the very BEST."
