Before: Having turned the “Big 4-0” on November 17th, Rachel McAdams ponders what it means to the pre-fight press: “To be honest, it’s just a number at this point. I mean, if you take care of yourself as well as I do, just having a 40th Birthday doesn’t mean you suddenly start falling apart. Still, it does mean I have been at this a long time. I’ve been Bantamweight Champion 4 times. That’s more than a great many fighters I started out with can say. But, in this sport, you can’t look back for too long. A new opponent is likely coming at you and you better be ready for her. In this case it’s Shay. Things haven’t been too pleasant this year between Foxfire and the Punchers, but I’ve always thought Shay was a class act. I’m sorry we didn’t start fighting each other sooner, but I am glad we are finally going up against one another. I know it will be a good fight and I mean to show Shay that there are still enough rounds in me to win this fight.”
Shay Mitchell seems to have gone all “Fan Girl” around Rachel. She actually asks Rachel for her autograph and when Rachel complies (with a bemused smile). She gives the veteran a big hug.
“I don’t know if this is Rachel’s fight, but I want it to be a memorable one,” Shay say eagerly.
Rachel frowns: “I never said this was my last fight, Shay, though I will admit I expect there aren’t many left.”
Shay blushes and looks confused: “Oh gosh, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to embarrass you. I just thought it would be SO neat to be your final opponent. I want to assure you I won’t go easy on you. I want this to be a fair and honest fight.”
Rachel is frowning again: “You know, Shay, when you find yourself digging yourself into a hole, the smartest thing to do is to stop digging. I never for a moment suggested that you job yourself out to me.”
“I didn’t mean it that way,” Shay complains and starting to sound annoyed herself. “Honestly, you Foxfire women are so touchy.”
“You’re still digging,” Rachel snapped.
“Well, fine. If that’s the way you want it: I’m going to do my best to knock your auburn-haired block off and leave you sucking canvas. You happy now?” Shay explodes.
“Spoken like a Spoiled Brat—which is what you Pretty Little Punching Bags have become,” Rachel fires back.
Shay looks ready to go right over and tackle the smaller Rachel, but PLP spokesperson Autumun Reeser dashes out to get in front of the seething Shay. Meanwhile Foxfire spokesperson Beth Harnois has joined Rachel.
“I think quite enough has been said. See you in the ring, Rachel—and hello, to you too, Bethie,” Autumn called out.
“Hey, Autie! Caught your fight with Jessica Chastain. Guess you know all about sucking canvas at the end of a fight!” Beth taunts Autumn.
“Love you, too, Bethie!” Autumn snaps and ushers Shay off the stage.
Unexpected ill-will still seems strong a fight night. Rachel is in her favorite red and black one peace swimsuit. Her red-brown auburn hair is piled on top of her head. Red boots and gloves with black laces. Shay is in a dark silvery one piece with a deep vee-neckline. She had silver boots and gloves with black laces. Her hair is in a simple ponytail. Two fighters regard each other coldly, but correctly during ring instructions. The glove tap somehow misses making contact before they depart for their corners. The bell soon rings.
R1: Shay moves out quickly and she goes for Rachel’s body with a hard flurry of hooks. Rachel hunching up, trying to counter with the jab, but then gets her chin clipped by a quick Shay Mitchell uppercut. Shay very aggressive as she crowds in against the smaller Rachel. Rachel still hunched up but striking back with the jab to the body. Shay not being discouraged by Rachel’s counters and she is now bringing hooks up to bang Rachel in the breasts. Rachel falling back and gets more room to deploy her jab. Shay gets smacked in the mouth and she gets more cautious as the round ends. Judges gives it to Shay Mitchell by a wide margin.
R2: Shay resumes her pressure attack, but Rachel is responding more strongly. Shay hit hard to the midsection even as she is punching at Rachel’s. Shay trying to body up on Rachel, but then McAdams goes after Shay’s breasts with a sustained pounding attack. Shay starts giving ground and Rachel then brings punches crashing to the sides of Shay’s head. Shay covering up against the head shots, but Rachel is back to punching Shay’s abs. Shay in another slow, but definite retreat as Rachel McAdams’ punching seems to gain power as the round ends. Rachel emerges the winner of a close round.
R3: Shay shifting tactics this round as she puts on a more mobile, shifting attack that strikes again and again at Rachel’s head. Rachel forced to duck down, but she’s having trouble keeping up with Shay’s fast moves and starts eating more and more of Shay’s leather. Rachel fin ally trading distance for relief from the constant punching. It works, but it also allows Shay to win the round by a good margin at the bell.
R4: Shay again returning to the fast moving, constantly striking attack of R3. Rachel takes a lot of punches early, but then she seems to figure out Shay’s movements. Shay runs into more aggressive countering when she comes in and this turns into a battle in close. Rachel driving hard counters into Shay’s body, but Shay is punching back equally hard. They battle all the way to the bell—and beyond. Referee has to jump in to stop the battle. Shay and Rachel glaring at each other as sweat trickles down their bodies before thy turn away and march to their corners. Judges add it up and give the round to Shay Mitchell, but Rachel McAdams has made it close this stanza.
R5: Rachel startles Shay Mitchell by charging out of her corner and the bell to deliver a smashing right to the jaw. Shay is thrown against the ropes and Rachel falls on her with a frenzied attack. Shay covering up her head as she takes a seat on the ropes and all she can do is let the McAdams Leather Storm burst upon her. Rachel really giving it all she has as she drives Shay against the strands, but she can’t seem to get Shay legs to crumble no matter how badly the younger woman’s body is worked over. Just goes on and on. Shay writhing under the punching, but seems to be using the ropes to keep herself up. On the other hand, she takes a fearful amount of punishment until the bell ends her ordeal. As the round ends, Rachel steps back and looks with satisfaction as a hollow-eyed and pain-wracked Shay Mitchell peels herself off the ropes. Shay looks blankly into Rachel’s cold eyes and then trudges off to her corner. Rachel looks more than a little pleased as she returns to her own stool. She;s won this round in a shutout.
R6: PLP corner working hard on the blasted Shay Mitchell during the break. Shay not looking good as she leaves her stool at the bell and makes her way slowly towards Rachel McAdams. Rachel moving smoothly and with confidence. She circles Shay, firing off some probing punches and not getting a strong reaction. Shay looking buttoned up, just trying to get through the round, but Rachel has other ideas. Rachel attacks to the midsection with sustained pounding attack of hooks that double Shay up while shaking those glorious legs. As Shay’s head comes forward, Rachel then unleashes a blazing right/left combo to the jaw that has Shay’s head being jerked around. Then Rachel brings a crashing right uppercut into Shay’s chin that snaps Shay’s head back, lifts her right foot off the canvas and THEN DOWN CRASHES SHAY! Shay toppling onto her back with the right leg stiffly coming down belatedly. Shay lay there groaning, her left arm at her side, then right over her face. Rachel glaring down at her fallen foe and then stomping off to neutral corner.
Referee moves in and starts to count. Shay starts to stir and even manages to push herself up using her right arm, but she looks around with a forlorn express and then up at the official.
“EIGHT!....NINE!...TEN!...YER OUT!”
THE WINNER: RACHEL MCADAMS DEFEATS SHAY MITCHELL KO6.
After: Rachel McAdams smiling broadly, mounts the nearest turnbuckle and exults like this is her first win. She then jumps down and is hugged by teammates Natalie Alyn Lind and Laura Vandervoort. Beth Harnois and trainer Virginia Madsen join in the congratulations.
Meanwhile, a devastated Shay Mitchell has been assisted back to her stool by trainer Nia Peeples assisted by Ashley Benson and Sasha Pieterse. Shay having trouble composing herself. Just when she seems to steady her emotions, there comes a voice:
“I wish I had started fighting you a long time ago,” said Rachel McAdams. “I could have been making your fighting career as intense—and as miserable—as Neve Campbell made mine.”
“I wanted to like you. I really did,” Shay says, “but you are just as nasty as the rest of those Foxfire bullies.”
“We’re not bullies: we’re just better than you and you can’t handle it!” Rachel snaps.
“We can handle it just fine!” Ashley Benson said boldly. “Stop rubbing it on Shay.”
“I think I have made my point,” Rachel says, “have a nice career Ms. Mitchell. It’s get better fter this!”
Shay tries to lunge at Rachel, but is help back by Ashley and Sasha.
“I suggest you leave right now,” Nia Peeples tells Rachel. Rachel smiles at the angry/distressed Punchers and walks away.
“I just can’t stand those bytches,” Shay mutters darkly. “I just can’t stand them!”
“You got that right,” Sasha Pieterse says and Ashley Benson nods in grim agreement.
Interesting contest that all the ill-will between Shay Mitchell and Rachel McAdams should not obscure. Shay did look like she was on her way to handling the veteran, but Rachel able to make mid-fight adjusts. That R5 blitz attack definitely turned around the fight as Rachel inflicted enough damage to allow her to easily finish Shay in R6. No doubt a distressing loss for Mitchell, but Rachel’s still a dangerous fighter and she should not feel too badly about losing to her. A definite morale-builder for McAdams, who is undoubtedly hoping to go out of the FCBA a solid winner. No word on just what Rachel’s future plans might be. Some fans are even hoping Neve Campbell can be lured out of retirement for one last go-around with her old foe, but this may just be fannish wistful thinking. For now, Rachel McAdams gets to savor a good win over a quality opponent and think about what comes next for her with a happy heart.
