Ariel Winter vs. Michelle Williams (Unified Flyweight Championship)

BEFORE:
Plenty of contrasts between challenger and champion in this one. Winter a relative newcomer who still can't take a legal drink vs. Williams, who's old enough to be her mother. Winter, the busty, bawdy brunette vs. Williams, the Ice Queen blonde. Winter the TV sitcom actress vs. Williams, the movie star. Winter whose game is power well above the weight vs. Williams one of the best boxers in FCBA history. Contrasts a plenty. And even more on the line. Especially for the brunette, who can become the girl who finally brings a flyweight title to Front Street, and who can complete as impressive a a trifecta as you can in the flyweight division, by going Portman, Kreuk, Williams. But. Of course, Michelle's not going to allow that. "HOW this girl beat Natalie and Kristin I have NO idea," says a dismissive Mishy. "Those two must have looked past her or something. But. As per USUAL, I will HANDLE things that need handled around here."
"Look," says Ariel with a smile, "No pressure on me. I'm not supposed to win. In fact, I'm not even supposed to BE here. So. I'll just go out and let it rip and see what happens."
ROUND ONE:
Ariel goes out and lets it rip. And, what happens isn't to her liking. Winter very aggressive early, and it's clear that's EXACTLY what Mishy expected. Williams becomes counter puncher immediately, giving ground, boxing, stinging the brunette with hard shot while Winter tries to get her offense going and bring her power to bear. She can do neither. Instead, she takes a licking from the blonde, who's seen all this a hundred times before. And knows EXACTLY how to deal with it. And, as the round goes on, it only gets worse. Winter, getting frustrated, turns up the aggression to "eleven" and Michelle lands more and more good shot. Ariel's never hurt, but she's getting touched up and good as the blonde piles up points and dominates the proceedings even more in the final minute than in the first. At the bell, it's Williams wide for the early 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
Winter slows her roll. After hearing it from her corner. For the entire minute she sits there. Now, the aggression is dialed back. Now, she's working her way forward carefully, staying much more sound, giving the blonde many fewer opportunities to counter. And, that makes a major difference. Instead of Mishy dominating the proceedings, we get a good, two-way round. Winter's able to close and bang at times. Williams holds her own in those exchanges, but the brunette gets the better of things. At range, though, it's the blonde who's getting the lion's share of the points. Oh, Ariel's scoring some now, boxing with and showing that she can, but the 20-year-old is NOT going to outbox Michelle Freaking Williams. So, with Winter gaining the edge inside and Williams outside, things are nip and tuck for the entire three minutes. And, when the round comes to an end, Michelle's done jusssstttt enough to claim her second straight and lead 20-18.
ROUND THREE:
Same again. More good, two-way stuff. And Williams more than willing to play this game. The blonde clearly believes the brunette can not beat her on on the cards, and, thus, she continues working to limit the heavy exchanges. Again, Ariel gets inside at times and bangs, and Michelle continues banging with. She's not going to get bullied in there under any circumstances. But, she keeps these flurries as short as possible, gets back to range, where she can manage with her accurate jab and score points with her unmatched boxing skills. Winter hangs in there on those terms, scores points, doesn't get run out of there. But, again, it's Mishy doing better at range, and using those points to more than offset what the brunette can do inside. When the bell rings ending the third stanza, it's close again, but, for the third round in a row, the blonde takes the points and builds up a 30-27 lead.
ROUND FOUR:
Winter dialing the aggression back up. Brunette may have a small fraction of the blonde's experience, but she knows she's in a hole and not going to get out of it on the current terms, so, she begins pressuring more. Pressuring, but not pressing, unlike in the first. And, it works. Now, Winter's closing more, getting where she wants to be and letting Williams have it with heavy leather. Michelle giving ground, trying to slow this down, but, now Ariel's gotten rolling and it's making a big difference. Now, Mishy's on her back foot, and the brunette is determined to keep her there. Winter works body, head, body, head, letting Williams have it with both hands. Final 30 seconds sees the champion backed to the ropes while the challenger gets off lusty. Williams clinching, running clock in the final seconds. At the bell, it's Winter wide and the cards show Williams' lead down to 39-37.
ROUND FIVE:
Ariel keeps coming. She's found something that works now, and she's going to keep throwing it at Michelle until Williams finds a way to stop it. Now. This is Michelle Freaking Williams, and, if there's anyone in the FCBA who can find a way to stop something, it's Michelle Williams. But. For the moment at least, the blonde champion has no answers. Instead, she's tossed onto the defensive once again, and, despite her best efforts to get back onto the offensive, kept there by the determined challenger. For the second round in a row. Michelle isn't hurt, but she's TAKING a lot of hurt from the brunette. Winter's got everything working about as well as it can work, and she's abusing the champion to both head and body. Final seconds of the round, once again, see Mishy trapped on the ropes taking a licking. But. The blonde once again keeps on ticking. It's Ariel wide at the bell, but Michelle still leads 48-47.
ROUND SIX:
Mishy adjusts. She's changing up footwork, using a drop step, doubling up on the jab, using every trick in the huge book she's built up in two decades in the FCBA, and, they're working. To a point. She's slowing Winter down, but not stopping her. Brunette still getting inside to work body and land hard shot to the head, but, the blonde's making that much harder to do, and scoring points while the younger woman does it. Result is another two-way round, again with Mishy scoring at range and Ariel dominating in close, where Williams is no longer doing as much banging back, but, instead, either clinching or slipping away as quickly as possible. It's nip-and-tuck the entire round, and, in the last seconds, Winter lands the punch of the fight so far, a short right hook that get's Michelle's attention in a big way. It's not enough, however, as the blonde claims the round and extends her lead back to two points, 58-56.
ROUND SEVEN:
Ariel right after Michelle off the bell. Williams again trying to manage, but the brunette slips inside and LANDS THAT RIGHT HOOK AGAIN AND MISHY IS HURT! Williams' knees do a shimmy and Ariel is ALL IN. Brunette HAMMERING away at the wobbly blonde, driving her back into the ropes and letting her have it with both hands. Williams in DESPERATE trouble, taking a serious licking as Winter pours on the heavy leather. Mishy puts the body on sale and Winter buys in bulk, but the tummy tenderizing lasts only a short period before the challenger goes back upstairs and makes with the big guns. Williams' head being buffeted side to side as she hangs on and rolls with in a tight ear muff. Referee looking in closely, but the veteran blonde is doing jusssttt enough to keep him at bay. Final seconds sees a SHARP right uppie that wobbles Michelle again, but the bell rings before the ref has time to process any of it. It's a shutout, Winter in the seventh. And, this is a one-point fight, 67-66.
ROUND EIGHT:
Winter determined to finish. She's right forward after the still-wobbly blonde. Williams playing defense, keeping the guard high, jabbing back in spots, again trying to manage. BOOM! Straight right from Ariel and MISHY STUMBLES BACK INTO THE ROPES! Winter all in again! Challenger throwing everything in the arsenal at the champion and DOWN GOES MICHELLE! It's that right hook again and it sends the blonde down to her right side against the ropes. Winter quickly to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Williams pushes up to hands and knees and climbs the ropes. Gets to her feet at eight. Ref gives it a long look during the mandatory but waives on Winter. Ariel goes to town! Brunette has 45 seconds to finish the thing and she's throwing everything including the kitchen sink at the champion. Williams hanging on desperately on the ropes. Referee on a hair trigger. Winter pouring fire on the Hall of Famer. This can NOT go on much longer...BELL! Williams survives. But, Winter grabs the lead 76-75 with two to go!
ROUND NINE:
Williams on the defensive early. But. Not for long. Blonde quickly figures out the brunette is gassed. Challenger's used up a lot of energy trying to finish in that last round. But, at 20, it might not take her long to shake the fatigue. And, Mishy knows it. So, the blonde switches immediately to the offensive, throwing flurry after flurry at the tired brunette. Now it's Winter covering up and giving ground. And, with her rival in retreat, the Hall of Famer tosses in the last of the reserves. It's all or nothing now for the champion. She's putting everything on a last throw of the dice. She backs Winter into the ropes and has at her. Ariel covering up in a tight earmuff. Brunette looking a little buzzed from the volume of fire she's taking, and it's coming from everywhere. Blonde pouring it on, and the gassed Winter not sending anything back and IT'S OVER! The referee leaping in to stop this thing! Ariel immediately protesting, but the referee, seeing nothing coming back, makes the call he has to make. Brunette heart-broken. Front Street corner in an absolute uproar. Michelle stumbling her way back to her corner, nothing left in the tank at all, but she's pulled it out, somehow, like she always seems to do, and your winner by TKO9 and STILL Unifed Flyweight Champion is Michelle Williams!
AFTER:
No smile from Williams in the post-fight. Too tired for that. Just matter of fact stuff. "I was better," the blonde says with a nod. "I've been telling you that all month. This is the way things are around here. When Kristin and Natalie CAN'T take care of business, I DO. And I DID."
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)
